Opis:
The presence of fullerene- and nanotube-like elements in carbons prepared from saccharose and anthracene by slow pyrolysis and then heat treated at 1000°C, 1900°C, and 2300°C has been revealed using Raman spectroscopy. High energy X-ray diffraction has been used to examine the effect on these carbons of heat treatment. Tendency to graphitization of the anthracene-based carbon and resistance to graphitization of the saccharose carbon will be considered in the light of the formation of curved graphitic networks and cages. The obtained results lead us to propose a model of the structure of non-graphitizing and graphitizing carbons.

Opis:
This work focuses on the high pressure Raman study of carbon nanostuctures comprising of single- or double-wall carbon nanotubes. The detailed examination of the Raman peaks, especially those attributed to the radial breathing modes of the carbon nanotubes, as a function of pressure provides a wealth of information concerning the pressure response of individual nanotubes as well as the internal-external tube (intratube) interactions. The radial breathing modes of both the internal and the external tubes in double-wall carbon nanotubes show reduced pressure slope values as compared to the corresponding in single-wall carbon nanotubes. The reduced slopes for the internal tubes reflect the pressure screening effect inside the external tubes, while those for the external tubes their structural reinforcement due to the encapsulation of smaller diameter tubes in their interior. Moreover, the magnitude of the pressure screening effect depends strongly on the intratube spacing and thus on the intratube interaction. All the experimental observations are well reproduced qualitatively by means of theoretical calculations based on a simple phenomenological model.

Opis:
Study and optimization of new nanoscale materials useful for optoelectronic application have been considered. The search for the effective nanostructured materials has been revealed in two directions: to optimize the mechanical hardness of the inorganic systems and to increase the photorefractive parameters of the organics with nanoobjects. It has been testified that the surface mechanical properties of the inorganic materials via nanotubes treatment process can be drastically improved. For example, the surface mechanical hardness of the UV and IR range soft materials can be increased up to 3-10 times under the conditions of oriented nanotubes placement. It has been obtained that the nonlinear optical characteristics (nonlinear refraction $n_{2}$ and cubic nonlinearity $χ^{(3)}$) of the organics thin films sensitized with fullerenes or nanotubes can be increased up to 3-4 orders of magnitude in comparison with the same parameters for bulk materials traditionally used for nonlinear optics.

Opis:
Fullerenes, nanotubes, quantum dots are considered as effective sensitizers to modify both the optical, nonlinear optical features, dynamic and polarization characteristics, as well as mechanical and spectral properties of the organic and inorganic materials. The correlation between photorefractivity and photoconductivity was supported and the relation between charge carrier mobility of pure conjugated structures and nanoobjects-doped ones has been revealed. An increase of transmission of nanostructured polarization films was observed. An extension of the nanocomposites applications area is considered.

Opis:
Optical absorption and Raman scattering studies of few-layer epitaxial graphene obtained by high temperature annealing of carbon terminated face of 4H-SiC(000-1) on-axis substrates are presented. Changing the pressure and annealing time, different stages of the graphene formation were achieved. Optical absorption measurements enabled us to establish average number of graphene layers covering the SiC substrate. Raman scattering experiments showed that integrated intensity of the characteristic 2D peak positively correlated with the number of graphene layers deposited on the SiC substrate. The spectral width of the 2D peak was found to decrease with the number of the deposited graphene layers.

Using the Lie algebraic method, the stretching vibrational energies of fullerenes $C_{70}$ and $C_{80}$ are calculated in the one-dimensional U(2) framework. By constructing the model Hamiltonian with the help of Casimir and Majorana invariant operators in this frame work, we calculated the local mode vibrational energy levels of the fullerenes $C_{70}$ and $C_{80}$.

Opis:
We have applied Lie algebraic model to distorted structure molecules to determine the vibrational spectra of different stretching and bending vibrational modes. The the Lie algebraic model of the Hamiltonian expression is H = $E_0 + \sum_{i = 1}^{n} A_{i} C_{i} + \sum_{i < j}^{n} A_{ij} C_{ij} + \sum_{i < j}^{n} \lambda_{ij} M_{ij}$. By using the Lie algebraic method, the stretching vibrational energies of fullerene $(C_{80})$ are calculated in the one-dimensional [U(2)] framework. Using the model Hamiltonian so constructed, we have calculated the local mode vibrational energy levels of the fullerene $(C_{80})$ accurately.

Opis:
Subject of this study is surface modification of titanium with thin layers of carbon nanotubes, obtained via an electrophoretic deposition, as a means to improve metal's biocompatibility and provide a suitable matrix for very facile further modifications, if needed. Article presents a preliminary evaluation of the material, using goniometer, scanning electron microscopy and the Raman spectroscopy. The layer is found to be composed of randomly distributed, strongly adhered carbon nanotubes, introducing nanotopography to the surface of titanium. Biological studies were conducted with the human osteoblast-like cell line MG63. Biocompatibility of materials was evaluated using: (a) lactate dehydrogenase cytotoxicity test (LDH) and (b) γ -H2AX genotoxicity test (presence of DNA double strand breaks). Results confirmed non-toxic character of the tested materials. Moreover, carbon nanotubes layers enhanced the biocompatibility properties of titanium substrate - material with carbon nanotubes possessed lower cellular toxic properties even than pure titanium. The result of this preliminary study are very promising and may serve as a starting point for further studies, including further chemical or biological modification of the obtained materials.

Opis:
We report results of EPR measurements of activated carbon fibers. Experiments made for pristine activated carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers with adsorbed molecules (CCl$\text{}_{4}$, C$\text{}_{6}$H$\text{}_{5}$NO$\text{}_{2}$, and H$\text{}_{2}$O) confirmed the localized character of paramagnetic centers observed in the system. Pristine activated carbon fibers are characterized by single Lorentzian line. Broader component of EPR signal appears when guest molecules are adsorbed in nanopores. The strongest localization is observed for water-filled activated carbon fibers nanopores (with hydrophobic pore walls) where changes in distance between nanographite particles were monitored by the g-shift to higher values. This process is related to stronger spin-orbit interaction of electrons trapped at nanographite particles compressed by guest molecules.
