Opis:: A capacitor development effort focused on capacitors used in pulsed power and power conversion applications underwent at General Atomics Electronic Systems Inc. (GA-ESI) for decades. In recent years, funding for these efforts has accelerated the rate of development progress to the point where the time it takes to decrease the size of a capacitor by half has dropped from 10 years to 4 years. This progress made in pulsed power and power conversion capacitors will be described along with the performance characteristics of today's capacitors.

Opis:: This paper describes the design and testing of the pulsed power system for the Orion Laser, which will be used for high temperature and density plasma physics research. The system supplies 8 MJ of energy to laser amplifiers and Faraday rotators. It consists of 17 capacitor bank modules, each with up to sixteen 150 μF charge storage capacitors, 25 kV power supply and controls. The energy is delivered by spark-gap switches to give a pre-pulse to ionise the flashlamps and a main pulse of 490 μs. The system delivers 5 shots a day with less than 0.2% variation in charge voltage.

Opis:: Linear transformer driver stages are designed to be used as a primary energy storage in high power pulsed generators. In this report, the design and test results of the linear transformer driver stage prototype that delivers ≈100 kA fast pulse with 133 ns FWHM into a ≈0.87 Ω resistive load are described. This stage consists of 20 (100 kV, 20 nF) storage capacitors that are arranged in 10 identical bricks located evenly around the axis of the stage. Each brick contains two capacitors, a multi-gap switch, and the output connector that transfers the energy to the resistive load. The outer diameter of the stage is ≈1.5 m, at a length of ≈20 cm. The stage is developed to demonstrate the possibility of the fast linear transformer driver technology to create high power pulsed generators.

Opis:: The need for repetitive high-power microwave systems, for instance within the scope of convoy protection, requires the availability of compact, repetitive pulsed-power generators. The development and the first experimental results of an upgraded balanced ISL Marx generator for future repetitive operations at pulse repetition frequencies in the order of 100 Hz are introduced. A key objective is to keep the fundamental modular coaxial concept by reason of its scalability and compactness. Simulation models were developed under the PSpice software package in order to investigate the charging and discharging phases of the Marx generator and also to determine the design criteria for repetitive operations. The charging resistors were replaced by ultracompact inductors for rapid charging, being able to withstand pulsed voltages up to 60 kV and pulsed currents up to 1.4 kA during the discharge phase. An improved type of strontium-titanate high-voltage ceramic capacitor was successfully tested experimentally up to 70 kV. Each new elementary stage of the Marx generator consists of eight 1.1 nF sectors of a cylinder capacitors mounted in parallel, two charging inductors of about 17.8 μH and two halves of spherical spark gaps. The pressurized self-triggered gas switches are arranged along the axis for fast consecutive breakdown thanks to the UV radiation emitted during the breakdown in each gap. The stages are installed in individual fibreglass housings. First experimental results of a 4-stage Marx generator in repetitive operation, driven by a 4 kW capacitor charging power supply up to a maximum voltage of 40 kV, are presented.

Opis:: Despite several past proposals to employ the inner cores of multiwalled nanotubes as, among others, ultra-high-frequency oscillators, memory devices, and nano-scale sensors, driving into motion a mass initially at rest within the nanotube outer walls has remained a crippling practical obstacle. In addition to the challenge of applying an external driving force upon the entirely embedded shuttle, it has been reported that the dynamics of such motion is "truly nonlinear", that is, it cannot be reduced to that of harmonic or nearly-harmonic oscillators even in the case of vanishing amplitudes. The author has shown that, since friction is nearly negligible, the inner core can be set into motion by breaking the high axial symmetry of the interlayer dispersion forces exerted on it by the outer walls. For instance, by fabricating nanotubes with even just two segments having slightly different dielectric properties, it was concluded that the motion of a partially extruded core under the action of an external electric field could be remarkably stabilized and electrical energy could be both stored into and released from the van der Waals field. Further significant progress was made by identifying a possible mechanism for the time-modulation of the spectral properties of double-walled nanotubes by acting on the free-carrier exciton screening in semiconducting nanotubes. In this paper, new developments are presented in the accurate mathematical modeling of these complex driven systems and additional future applications of telescoping nanotubes as actuators, non-electrochemical energy nanostorage systems, and neutral particle accelerators are illustrated.

Opis:: The paper presents the current state of research on superconducting devices for the electrical power system, i.e. transformers, fault-current limiters, and energy storages. In particular, it describes scientific achievements of the Laboratory of Superconducting Technologies of Electrotechnical Institute. The development of distributed and renewable energy sources, as well as the increasing number of receivers with low power factor will rise interest in superconducting fault-current limiters and superconducting transformers rated below 1 MVA. Previous studies were focused on the largest power transformers and highest current superconducting fault-current limiters. ReBCO coated conductors allow to build efficient superconducting AC devices. Superconducting tape of a layered structure (second generation HTS tape) enables the construction of transformer rated up to a few MVA without the usage of parallel conductors. Relatively high resistance of the tape in normal state allows to build fault-current limiters and fault-current limiting transformers. Superconducting transformers and superconducting fault-current limiters can help to increase connected power of distribution stations and thereby accelerate development of renewable energy sources.
