Opis:: This essay considers Adam Zagajewski’s poem “Evening, Stary Sącz” and in particular, the line “Little abysses open between the stones.” This image invites us to reflect on the many startling gaps and voids in Zagajewski’s poems. At times, those abysses suggest historical and political dimensions particular to Polish (and European) experience in the 20th century; but more often, Zagajewski presents the abyss as moral and metaphysical. “Evening, Stary Sącz,” a poem that doesn’t on its surface appear very threatening, opens suddenly through its “little abysses” into sacrificial reality.

Opis:: Victor Hugo’s novel "The Man who laughed" represents suffering, evil and tragedy as shared both by man and elements of nature, both by the persecutor and the persecuted. Evil is shown as represented by darkness, abyss, and all material aspects of being; goodness is identified with radiance, light, ascendancy and spirituality. Those values have social, political and moral aspects, but also metaphysical and cosmic ones, Hugo treating these as Ananke, a specific fate transcending all dimensions of being. The plot of the novel describes in detail particular places where the dramatic events take place, literally creating a topography of evil.

Opis:: The paper offers an analysis of crucial concepts included in Yehuda ha-Levi's poem "Ləḵå nap̄ši bəṭuḥå ʾo ḥăreḏå" (My soul trusts in You and fears [of You]), which belongs to the poetical cycle called Šire Ṣiyyon. The narrative axis of the poem is a poetic description of the poet's pilgrimage to Eretz Israel, both of which (the journey and its goal) acquire symbolic meanings. The article explores three possible layers of pilgrimage poems in general: (1.) travel in space; (2.) soul's gradual spiritual transformation, and (3.) a cosmic journey in symbolic space. The analysis focuses on two key concepts, emotionally and symbolically loaded: təhom (abyss) and ʿolå ʿăqudå (the binding offering). The symbolic context provided by midrashic literature allows us to conclude that along with the real travel in space, a mystical journey is developed - through gehinnom, the abyss and hell, to a place of expiation and offering, Mount Moriah, adjacent to Gan Eden, paradise. In addition, when we recall some fragments of the poet's prosaic opus magnum, the "Kuzari", we gain a picture of the perfect offering that reconstructs the loss of direct contact with the Deity in the diaspora. Consequently, the mystical contact with God and his world is achieved again by means of mystical voyage, as in the times of the prophets of Israel.

Opis:: Saeculum in Hilary’s teaching is a term applied to mankind remaining under the influence of sin and evil spirits. Drawing on Sacred Scripture, the Bishop of Poitiers compares earthly reality to a stormy and bottomless sea or to the depths of the sea, and describes the way that saeculum works: the mild and gentle breezes of the sea symbolize the cunning activities of heretics and violent storms and tempests correspond to the attacks of pagans and evil spirits. By portraying the world as a sea abyss, the bishop points out the nature of saeculum, filled with dangers to man’s faith. At the same time, he tries to persuade believers to work on themselves and indicates how to deal with saeculum. In Hilary’s teaching, faith matters the most in contact with earthly reality. The proclamation of Christ, as well as fasting and prayer, are all useful for the believer. Hilary clearly shows that saeculum contributes to the spiritual development of man, even though it carries with it many risks.

Opis:: The abyss is most often discussed from the point of view of the Scripture or human existential experience. The purpose of this article is to show the abyss in the icon where these two aspects are present. Applying reference and comparison methods, one can see the victory of Jesus Christ, which takes place in sheol over Satan and his rebellious angels. The victory accomplished on the cross by the Savior has its continuation here because in the icon it becomes the gate to heaven for the righteous dating back to Adam and Eve, the first parents of humankind. Rich symbolism of the icon Descend into the Abyss from various icon schools allows us to make a broad theological interpretation which becomes an inspiration for further research and the discovery of its message and symbolism, in the dogmatic, spiritual, liturgical, homiletic, artistic and psychological dimensions.

Opis:: In some church songs we may observe a three-level representation of the Universe: the heaven above, the earth below, and the abyss underneath. Furthermore we observe there a dualistic conception of the human beings, composed of body and soul. These views are the parts of the Plato’s doctrine, now outdated. In this paper the texts of the church songs, contained in the all-Polish Church songbook by Fr. John Siedlecki CM, published in Cracow in 2015, have been analyzed from this point of view. Many examples of both types of Platonism, cosmological and anthropological, have been detected there. The philosophical arguments for the existence of an immortal soul, recently proposed, turned out to be unconvincing. More persuading are some texts of the New Testament, in which Jesus and his apostles ensure the eternal life for the honest and god-fearing people. The biblical sense of such words as body and soul, permit to avoid the difficulties in the ancient philosophical systems. The author postulates avoiding the above mentioned Platonic ideas in the composing of the new church songs, but at the same time the treating with respect the traditional liturgical texts, always keeping in mind that their ideological sense may be a bit out of date.

Opis:: The work deals with the topic of the influence of Nietzscheanism on Ladislav Klíma and Stanislav Przybyszewski, and seeks to identify the legacy left by the writers, which influenced later generations of artists in various disciplines. A thorough examination of these influences involves comparing literary works, but also the writers' biographies. The most important aspects from Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy are also presented, so as to better understand the inspiration of the Czech and Polish writer. Neglected during their lives and forgotten after their deaths, the writers developed unusual concepts and even entire philosophical systems on the basis of Nietzsche's philosophy, based on the assumption of the power of the individual and the desire for the infinite.
Praca zajmuje się tematem wpływu nietzscheanizmu na Ladislava Klímę i Stanisława Przybyszewskiego, a także stara się określić pozostawione przez pisarzy dziedzictwo, które wpłynęło na późniejsze generacje twórców różnych dziedzin. Dokładne zbadanie tych wpływów polega na porównaniu dzieł literackich, ale też życiorysów pisarzy. Przedstawione zostały też najważniejsze aspekty z filozofii Friedricha Nietzschego, tak aby lepiej zrozumieć inspirację czeskiego i polskiego pisarza. Niezrozumiani za życia i zapomniani po śmierci pisarze, na podstawie filozofii Nietzschego wytworzyli nietuzinkowe koncepty, a nawet całe systemy filozoficzne, wychodząc z założenia o potędze jednostki i pragnieniu nieskończoności.
