Relative Acculturation Extended Model - presentation of the model within the context of migration of Poles

The aim of this paper is to present a new theoretical model which is used for the research in the field of acculturation processes – Relative Acculturation Extended Model (RAEM).The socio-cultural and theoretical context of the model and its main predictions and methodology are presented and analyzed. The empirical verification of the model within the context of migration of Poles has been carried out and is presented in the paper.The results of the analysis show that many predictions of the model are valid in the polish context. Moreover, it is proposed to add a new domain to the model (Study, School). Furthermore, a new tool has been created which can serve in future empirical analyses of interviews based on RAEM – the list of categories and themes which can be included in each domain of RAEM.
Niniejsza praca zawiera prezentację modelu teoretycznego stworzonego w celu badania zjawiska akulturacji – Poszerzonego Modelu Akulturacji Relatywnej. Przedstawia się w niej kontekst społeczno – kulturowy i teoretyczny powstania modelu, główne założenia modelu i formułowane na ich podstawie przewidywania oraz dokonuje się krytycznej analizy założeń teoretycznych i rozwiązań metodologicznych. W kolejnej części pracy prezentuje się wyniki badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych przez autorów modelu oraz wyniki weryfikacji empirycznej, której poddany został model w kontekście migracji Polaków przez autorkę pracy. Uwagę poświęca się przede wszystkim takim elementom modelu, jak zastosowanie typologii czteropolowej (integracja, asymilacja, separacja, marginalizacja), wyróżnienie płaszczyzny idealnej i realnej strategii akulturacyjnych, podział pola badawczego na 8 sfer funkcjonowania psychospołecznego, sposób pomiaru stosowany w badaniach empirycznych. Szczególne znaczenie przypisano potrzebie weryfikacji następujących założeń modelu. Po pierwsze, akulturacja jest procesem złożonym i relatywnym. Po drugie, rezultat procesu akulturacji w jest w znacznym stopniu kształtowany pod wpływem kontekstu kulturowego badanych grup. W wyniku przeprowadzonej analizy stwierdzono, że znaczna część przewidywań modelu RAEM sprawdza się również w kontekście migracji Polaków. Ponadto, na podstawie otrzymanych wyników postuluje się dodanie nowej domeny (Nauka). Owocem przeprowadzonych analiz jest również stworzenie narzędzia do analizy danych – listy kategorii i obszarów tematycznych składających się na poszczególne domeny funkcjonowania psychospołecznego.

Opis:
The article describes issues relating to determinants of acculturation strategies in the context of contacts between migrants and the host society. The starting point of the discussion is the presentation of selected models of adjustment strategies. The occurrence of a particular type of adaptation is determined by different factors, which can be divided into two basic groups. On one hand there are external factors, on the other, there are the migrant’s own predispositions and attitudes. Individual determinants constituting each of those groups are subjected to a detailed analysis. At the same time, a particular attention is paid to the changeable character of the interactions between the migrants and the receiving community. The coexistence of all of the above factors leads to their mutual interrelations affecting the complexity and the dynamics of the adjustment process.

In this article we test the relationship between indicators of acculturation (language, media, selfidentification, religion, food and clothing) and nostalgia. It checks empirically, on a sample of 201, the existence of a significant effect between our independent variables and our dependent variable. The results of analysis of variance, One-Way Anova, reveal that the home language, the food of home country, the media, self-identification with the origin country and the religion of the origin country have a signifi cant impact on nostalgia. This article contributes to new theoretical elements in the field of nostalgia and culture as a complement of several previous studies. The managerial contributions of this study focus on positioning of nostalgic brands and developing marketing strategies for this kind of products.

Polish child migrants : psychological perspective

According to the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, as of January 2017, there were 52.893 Polish people residing in Spain. Even though the Polish minority has been present in Spain since the 16th century, the community started to grow in the 1980s due to the influx of economic immigrants. In 2004, there were more than 800 children who had at least one parent of Polish origin. It can be said that those children belong to the second generation of Polish migrants. The Relative Acculturation Extended Model (RAEM) has been adapted to measure the acculturation of children and adolescents. It assumes that people undertake different acculturation strategies in different spheres of life. These spheres were divided into central and peripheral. This model also allows to distinguish real and ideal plane of acculturation. The comparative studies (Lopez-Rodriguez et al., 2014) conducted with a group of young people in Spain and Italy show that children and adolescents prefer to preserve their own culture in the central spheres, while adapting the culture of the host country in the peripheral spheres. The main research question of my paper is: What strategies of cultural adaptation according to the RAEM Model undertaken in peripheral spheres do children and youth of Polish origin mention in their narrations? Twelve people participated in the pilot study. One subgroup consisted of five children aged 10 to 15, who attend classes in a Polish school. Their parents constituted another subgroup. Four children had both parents of Polish descent, one child came from a mixed-race family: Spanish-Polish. As part of the study, 11 semi-in-depth interviews were conducted. The starting point of each conversation was a set list of questions based on the RAEM model, which each researcher could develop depending on the threads introduced by the examined person. The qualitative data collected in the pilot study of this group of Polish child immigrants show some preliminary results. It is difficult to assess the strategies undertaken by teenage immigrants in particular spheres. Firstly, the narrations of children about the adaptation strategies partly coincided with the Spanish-Italian quantitative ones, saying that in the peripheral spheres children adopt the culture of the host country. On the other hand, the behaviors described by young people can be understood as undertaking integration strategies because they go to Spanish schools and take part in Polish 'Saturday' classes, and maintain contact with both Spanish people and the Poles who live in Poland. In the sphere of peer relations, children narrate the differences between the real and the ideal planes. In the real plane, children say that they do not keep in touch with children from Polish "Saturday" schools outside the school building, but in the ideal plane, they would like to be able to meet with them outside the school context. Parents and their acculturation strategies may have an impact on children's behaviors. To test this, in further studies, the acculturation strategies undertaken by parents should be additionally covered. Moreover, the factors which affect the undertaking of particular integration strategies should be found.

Temat ujęto z punktu widzenia psychologii międzykulturowej, opisując Brexit w kontekście wiedzy na temat mechanizmów psychologicznych, stojących za tak ekstremalnym przypadkiem swoistej strategii „budowania” stosunków międzykulturowych. Celem opracowania jest wskazanie na ważny moment ewolucji procesów akulturacyjnych we współczesnej Europie. Analizujemy przyczyny wyboru podjętego w Wlk. Brytanii oraz czynniki kolejnego wyboru: między odejściem a pozostaniem Polskich emigrantów i rodzin emigracyjnych w Wielkiej Brytanii. Tekst ma formę przeglądową, z odwołaniem do badań własnych.
Acculturation processes as complex and multidimensional are analyzed towards different domains, different fields in which both cultures change e.g. political, work, economic, family, social, religion… In all those fields it is important to search for solutions helping to incorporate immigrants in their new societies and allow effective coexistence between majorities and minorities. To analyze post-Brexit concerns of such nature among Polish immigrants, Psychologists from Polish University Abroad in London (PUNO) designed a research program: “Poles in Britain during Brexit.”

Narratives of linguistic victimhood and majority groups’ acculturation strategies and multilingual attitudes : the mediating role of intergroup empathy

Language is a crucial element of the acculturation process. In immigration-receiving societies, studying the linguistic acculturation of majority groups is socially and theoretically relevant. In bilingual contexts where co-official languages have a history of conflict, the narrative of linguistic victimhood may play an important role in predicting responses to linguistically diverse immigrants. In two correlational studies in historically linguistically oppressed societies, specifically in the Basque Country (N = 589) and Catalonia (N = 526), using representative samples, we explored the relationship between a society’s narratives of inclusive linguistic victimhood, encompassing both general perceptions (i.e., perceived similarities between in-groups’ and out-groups’ experiences of linguistic victimization) and context-specific perceptions (i.e., perceived similarity between the linguistic victimhood of the host society group and of immigrant linguistic minorities), and majority group attitudes towards linguistic acculturation (i.e., willingness to learn the languages of immigrant groups or to maintain the majority group language) and multilingual policies. Additionally, we examined the mediating role of intergroup empathy in these associations. The results indicated that, while general inclusive victimhood narratives were associated with native language preservation, context-specific narratives were linked to stronger willingness to learn immigrants’ languages and supporting multilingual policies. Empathy played a mediating role between general inclusive victimhood and the willingness to acquire immigrant group languages, as well as in the relationship with attitudes towards multilingual policies. The theoretical and practical implications of these victimization narratives for acculturation processes and structural changes in the host society are also discussed.

Any short review of the penetration of European music into Japan and its enthusiastic appropriation calls for a different approach to the controversial question of acculturation. The rapid growth in the pianos popularity in Japan, together with the implicit musical revolution, could also occasion a parallel with the similar process of acculturation which occurred in Eastern Europe (for instance the Romanian Principalities). Musical Westernization (including the institutional and educational reform) might, in contradicting the traditional local musical concepts, mirror a different perspective on intercultural communication and contemporary cultural education.

The current state of research on acculturation indicates that this issue has gained a growing interest in recent years among researchers such as Rudmin, Berry, Kim, Abreu, Malewska-Peyre. In the 1930’s, thanks to anthropologists such as Redfield, Linton and Herskovits, an understanding of the phenomenon of acculturation crystalized in the humanistic discourse. Already in the eighteenth century the idea of cultural identity in Western Europe interested Johann Gottfried Herder, who believed that every culture is homogeneous and national. A polemic with this vision of culture, which was paradigmatic for the nineteenth and twentieth century, was expounded by Wolfgang Welsch, who proposed his own concept of transculturality in the era of globalization. Wolfgang Welsch’s concept of transcultural identity is an important turning point in the study of the phenomenon of acculturation, which, as a matter of interest to psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists and philosophers of culture, is usually analyzed at the group level and opens the way to transfer these studies to the level of creative individual experience, specified in literary texts. The aim of the article is therefore an attempt to look at the image of acculturation fixed in the Parisian Tarot by Manuela Gretkowska, and the subject of interest are the artistic strategies for expressing this phenomenon.

Kornel Filipowicz’s short writing forms are frequently oneiric in nature; factual accounts of dreams. An example is a short story written toward the end of the 1970s titled Gdy przychodzą we śnie (“When in dream they come”). It is a prophetic vision of a peculiar meeting, whereby the sympathising and merciful narrator invites a group of Afro-Asian refugees to his abode. The visitors promptly proliferate, eventually ruining the hospitable home and taking the host captive. The short description of a nightmare contains transparent anticipative visions of the contemporary migration crisis currently plaguing Western Europe, together with positing acculturation as the main concern of multicultural societies. Of particular note is the author’s idea of colonising Western man through Christian-based sympathy and tolerance, which not only breeds gratitude, but also turn against the benefactors.
