Opis:: The last two decades have faced an intense, and in its essence – revolutionary, development of new information technologies, especially of the Internet, which fundamentally changes political, economic, and social life. The new situation that results from this Internet boom requires redefinition of a number of concepts, including the notion of “public sphere”. The purpose of our work is to describe the contemporary public sphere in the context of the virtual space. The article opens with a framework of the concept of the public sphere, and a short historical outline of its twentieth-century theory. Then, the main trends in the Web activism are presented along with a brief description of social and political campaigns taking place in the virtual world.

Opis:: My paper is related to the thirtieth anniversary of the imposition of martial law in Poland on 13 December 1981. It focuses on Nowa Huta, a large borough in Cracow which mounted strong resistance to Jaruzelski’s decision. I first discuss the way Nowa Huta’s opposition activists were interned on the night of 12/13 December 1981 to later describe the details of the strike and its ultimate pacification.

The second chapter contains the most important actions carried out by such groups as Gay Liberation Front and Gay Activists Alliance in the New York City.

Opis:: How do activists manage life commitments and membership in a radical social movement organization? Starting with the assumption that activists are ‘more than activists’ who have personal lives that can affect their movement lives, I use identity theory to analyze how competition among identities influences participation in the organization to which they belong. I also assess how the collective identity of a revolutionary socialist organization affects the personal identities of activists. This movement identity is labeled ‘socialist identity’ which must then compete with other identities that the activist may possess. The methods used were modified life history interviews of former and current members, participant observations, and content analysis of the organization’s documents.

Tytuł:: Dare to care : women advocating for environmental justice in polish cities

Opis:: Over the past decade, women in post-socialist cities have significantly expanded their influence in grassroots environmental initiatives. This paper examines different forms of women’s advocacy for nature protection in cities. Interviews with women involved in grassroots initiatives targeting environmental justice issues in four Polish metropolitan areas identified motivations and the tools they use in their fight. The study also explores the outcomes of women’s involvement in environmental protection activities. The results are summarised in the form of a model of women’s engagement towards a better urban environment. Moreover, the manuscript addresses the lack of empirical, gender-sensitive research on women’s experiences and roles in grassroots environmental justice movements in post-socialist urban environments. The analysis reveals multiple dimensions of environmental justice addressed in women’s activism, including access to green and blue areas, participation in decision-making, advocacy for legislative change and public awareness-building. While the motherhood narrative remains present, participants primarily frame their engagement through the ethics of care and a perception of nature as an equal partner. Women’s involvement emerges as a manifestation of agency and strategic action rather than victimhood, with a key role played by affective strategies, such as invoking empathy and emotional attachment to nature. The study contributes to ecofeminist debates by demonstrating a coexistence in the post-socialist women’s environmental activism of cultural, deep-green, and anarcho-ecofeminist strands. It also advances the theory of environmental justice by showing how distributive and procedural claims intersect with the ethics of care, producing an intersectional model of justice adapted to post-socialist urban conditions.
W ciągu ostatniej dekady kobiety w miastach postsocjalistycznych znacząco zwiększyły swój wpływ na oddolne inicjatywy na rzecz ochrony środowiska. Niniejszy artykuł analizuje różne formy działań kobiet na rzecz ochrony środowiska w miastach. Wywiady z kobietami zaangażowanymi w oddolne inicjatywy dotyczące sprawiedliwości środowiskowej w czterech polskich obszarach metropolitalnych pozwoliły zidentyfikować motywacje i narzędzia, których używają w swojej walce. Badanie analizuje również rezultaty zaangażowania kobiet w działania na rzecz ochrony środowiska. Wyniki podsumowano w formie modelu zaangażowania kobiet na rzecz lepszego środowiska miejskiego. Artykuł porusza także kwestię braku badań empirycznych, uwzględniających aspekt płci dotyczących doświadczeń i roli kobiet w oddolnych ruchach na rzecz sprawiedliwości środowiskowej w postsocjalistycznych miastach. Analiza ujawnia wielowymiarowość sprawiedliwości środowiskowej poruszanej w aktywizmie kobiet, w tym dostęp do terenów zielonych i błękitnych, udział w procesie decyzyjnym, orędownictwo na rzecz zmian legislacyjnych i budowanie świadomości społecznej. Chociaż narracja o macierzyństwie jest nadal obecna, uczestniczki ujmują swoje zaangażowanie przede wszystkim w kontekście etyki troski i postrzegania natury jako równoprawnego partnera. Zaangażowanie kobiet jawi się jako przejaw sprawczości i strategicznego działania, a nie bycia ofiarą, przy czym kluczową rolę odgrywają strategie afektywne, takie jak odwoływanie się do empatii i emocjonalnego przywiązania do natury. Badanie wnosi wkład w debaty ekofeministyczne, demonstrując współistnienie w postsocjalistycznym aktywizmie ekologicznym kobiet nurtów kulturowych, radykalnie zielonych i anarcho-ekofeministycznych. Rozwija również teorię sprawiedliwości środowiskowej pokazując, jak roszczenia dystrybucyjne i proceduralne krzyżują się z etyką troski, tworząc intersekcjonalny model sprawiedliwości dostosowany do postsocjalistycznych warunków miejskich.

Opis:: The theme of my work is related to the thirtieth anniversary of the introduction of mar-tial law in Poland on the 13th December 1981 by General Wojciech Jaruzelski. It concerns one of the largest sites of resistance in the country – Nowa Huta. I have presented what the arrest of the opposition activist in Nowa Huta looked like on the night of 12/13 December 1981 and I have presented the course of strike and its repression in the largest workplace in Cracow – in the Vladimir Lenin Steelworks in Nowa Huta.

Opis:: In her article, Katarzyna Szkaradnik analyses the memoirs of the pioneers of the Polish national movement in the area of Cieszyn Silesia, and also the memoirs of subsequent social, cultural, and educational activists written before the end of World War I. Szkaradnik examines these texts by focusing on the representations of the idea which the authors were spokesmen for, i.e., Polishness as a cultural legacy as well as Poland as a promised land where the people of Cieszyn Silesiawill gain due rights. The metaphors “awakening” and “rebirth” naturalized the bond between these people and Polishness, which was supposed to last thanks to, among other things, Polish religious publications, despite Silesia’s separation from so-called Motherland. In this respect, the memoirs have persuasive-didactic functions in that they help to build and strengthen the national identity. Szkaradnik examines the rhetorical strategies used by the activists (and scholars) of the said movement as well as the system of values which they propagate. The fact of the national activists’ being servants of an ideology is accompanied by their ideology of service, akin to the positivist idea of educational and economic work. Importantly, most of the authors descended from local people of humble origin and they gave up on the chance of social advancement in order to help their countrymates to attain social, political, and intellectual emancipation.

Opis:: Leadership is a key factor in successful social movement mobilization. Without a grasp of leadership dynamics in a community, it is difficult to explain how individuals come to occupy leadership roles and what impact this has on the overall success of a movement effort. In this study, I use the qualitative approach to investigate how leadership is framed in a community facing the existence of environmental contamination. I follow the development of leadership among actors and particularly the relationships that they create and maintain with expert environmental activists. Using interview data from 35 community residents and activists, I establish how leadership frames were presented to the community and how these frames impacted mobilization efforts and outcomes.

Opis:: The paper deals with the issue of learning style preferences in the population of university students. It presents the results of research which was conducted at three different faculties. The examination of individual styles is based on the experiential theory of learning (Honey-Mumford). The research results point to a significant preference for the activist and reflector styles, regardless of the respondents’ gender and the specialization of their faculty. The learning style preference, however, does not correspond with the most often used educational methods (lecture, reference in seminars).
