Opis:: The subject matter tackled by Jakub Gałęziowski in his latest book Nieopowiedziane biografie. Polskie dzieci urodzone z powodu wojny [Untold biographies. Polish children born because of war — CBOW] includes testimonies of people who were conceived during the Second World War. An important aspect, however, is that these children were born from unions between the occupants and local women. The act itself may have been voluntary or forced, and the book refers only to the latter. The book is an important attempt to fill a large research gap that could not be filled for many years, due to communist rule in Poland as well as the women themselves or surrogate families concealing the truth.

Opis:: Objectives: The purpose of this text is to identify the main types of intergenerational relationships and methods of integration different generations applied in everyday life. Recognition of these practices should be used in inclusion policy. Research Design & Methods: This article uses qualitative methods of sociology, in particular biographical narratives (story of life) to explore types of intergenerational relationships. Findings: This paper finds that relational structures are an important part of every biographical narrative. Research has identified five types of intergenerational relationships. Implications / Recommendations: This article stresses the importance of biographical work and the restrictions on the creation of multigenerational groups as a fairly common way of integrating different generations. Contribution / Value Added: The approach presented in this article opens new possibilities for a policy of inclusion and ways of counteracting intergenerational conflicts.

Tytuł:: The usefulness of the biographical method in media studies

Opis:: My work is a review. Its purpose is to explain the operation and application of the method itself and how its use has changed over the years. I have based my work on articles found through Google Schoolar, but have often used the texts I found in the footnotes in the above mentioned articles. At Google Schoolar I searched for articles using keywords: biography methodology, biographical method, biographical method in media studies, biography today; The articles I used to write the paper were in Polish.I divided the work into two parts. The first chapter is divided into four subsections. The first subchapter allows you to learn the basic concepts and definition of the biographical method. The second one presents the pioneers of the method and shows the essence of creating diaries. Next, the use of the biographical method in practice is described. The last subchapter is devoted to discussing the differences between biography and autobiography. In the second chapter there was a divide into three subchapters, they explain in turn how the method works in current times, how it looks and how the use of the method has changed over the years and the influence of the current user on this method.
Moja praca ma charakter przeglądowy. Jej celem jest wytłumaczenie działania i zastosowania samej metody oraz tego, jak się zmieniało jej wykorzystywanie z biegiem lat. Artykuły, na których bazowałam pochodzą z bazy Google Schoolar, jednak często posiłkowałam się tekstami, które znalazłam w przypisach w wyżej wymienionych artykułach. W Google Schoolar szukałam artykułów przy użyciu słów kluczy: biography methodology, metoda biograficzna, metoda biograficzna w medioznawstwie, biografia dziś; Artykuły, które posłużyły mi do napisania pracy były w języku polskim. Pracę podzieliłam na dwie części. Pierwsza część dzieli się na cztery podrozdziały. Pierwszy podrozdział pozwala poznać podstawowe pojęcia i definicję metody biograficznej. Drugi, natomiast przedstawia pionierów metody oraz ukazuje istotę tworzenia pamiętników. Następnie opisane jest wykorzystywanie metody biograficznej w praktyce. Ostatni podrozdział poświęcony jest omówieniu różnic między biografią a autobiografią. W drugim rozdziale nastąpił podział na trzy podrozdziały, mówią one kolejno o tym jak metoda działa w aktualnych czasach, jak wygląda i jaki sposób zmieniło się użycie metody na przestrzeni lat oraz wpływ aktualnego użytkownika na ową metodę.

Opis:: The article suggests a reading of Nałkowska’s first work, treated as a literary study of narcissism. In Lodowe pola Nałkowska made an unsuccessful attempt to express the work through an inner narcissistic conflict, giving the protagonist, Janka Dernowiczówna, the qualities of narcissistic personality, such as individualism, dandyism, estheticism, Nietzscheism, atrophy of instinct, need for self-control, stage directing of life, and never-satisfied self love. The author also transferred her own feeling of emotional neglect by her mother in infancy onto the feeling of rejection of Janka’s proposal by Rosławski. The image and experience of “ice fields” as the emptiness of life, chaos, and powerlessness, becomes a metaphor of narcissistic “abandonment depression”, which became, in Nałkowska’s later work, a constantly present emotional mood and a source of artistic “tanatic imagination”.

Opis:: The inspiration for this article was a project entitled “Crossing Borders: Activation of Disabled Seniors” carried out in the Daily Nursing Home run by Stowarzyszenie Przyjaciół Strzyży (Strzyża Friends’ Association) in Gdańsk, in the period between 15 June and 15 December 2015. The project focused on eliciting memories about the seniors’ past with the use of a biographical method and a narrative interview. The problems concentrate on the issue of de-somatisation and possibilities and modes of compensation. Referring to the therapeutic role of the biographical method, the author tries to find out if creating narratives supports the acquisition of sense of life and acceptance of the past in the context of traumatic childhood experiences.

Opis:: This article aims to answer the question of the biographical meaning of the pandemic in the experiences of so-called “essential workers” who performed their duties in the first line of struggle with the consequences of the COVID-19 health crisis. The analysis of workers’ experiences helps us contribute to the ongoing debates on the role of macro-level events in autobiographical storytelling and the discussion on biographical turning points in sociology. The empirical analysis is based on a collection of more than 80 biographical narrative interviews in healthcare, social care, education, and logistics, from which we selected two stories of the pivotal significance of the pandemic crisis for biographical change for analysis. Biographical analysis makes it possible to describe which conditions are conducive to the inclusion of the pandemic in the main biographical story as a turning point.

Opis:: This article concernes Third Culture Kids (TCKs), i.e. persons, who due their parents’ work spent a significant period of their childhood or school years in a different country than that of their parents. Due to the fact that in today’s globalizing world more and more people experience working abroad and many of them are accompanied by their families, the issue of the consequences of such a mobile and multicultural childhood becomes extremely important. The author has conducted 53 biographical interviews with adult Third Culture Kids. The biographical consequences of moving in one’s childhood are analyzed in a few spheres: professional life, social relations, psychological problems, and identity construction. TCKs are most often from the families of diplomats, professionals working abroad on contracts, employees of international firms. The vast majority of them has tertiary education and chooses a career which gives independence, the possibility to travel and capitalize cultural competences, which one has acquired thanks to his or her upbringing. Unfortunately, such a lifestyle since childhood is associated with the risk of psychological (ranging from the lack of embeddedness to depression) and social (e.g. sense of alienation, difficulties in engaging in deeper relations) problems. Building a coherent and long-lasting identity is also a challenge for Third Culture Kids. The author describes means of dealing with the above-mentioned problems.

Opis:: Aim. In order to provide psychological counselling, it is necessary to properly diagnose and study the psycho-emotional states, psychological makers of parents raising children with special educational needs (SEN). Methods. In the diagnostic and practical work with parents of children with SEN, we used the text analysis method and the biographical method (including projective techniques lifeline, my autobiography), which combine diagnostic and psychotherapeutic scientific results. Family sociogram technique (Eidemiller, 2002) and its modified version (Tkachova, 2014) are used to study interpersonal family relationships and the nature of communication. The article analyses the scientific data and approaches to the study of problems faced by parents, arising from the condition of their child; emotional states of parents raising a child with SEN; stage of experience of the birth of their child. Results. Intervention is focused on the present and future. If the experience of the past comes up, it is used for the benefit of achieving certain goals. An important result of the study to be worked on is that parents of special children mention only their family and children, but forget about their own wellbeing. Children with SEN are surrounded by care and love, parents seek symbiotic relationships with children trying to satisfy all their needs, protect from difficulties, offer boundless love and sometimes over-protection. Conclusion. Knowledge of psychological stages identified within the theory of grief helps professionals understand when and how it is better to intervene in the situation taking into account the characteristics of a particular family and individual reactions.

Opis:: Artykuł rozwija teoretyczny potencjał koncepcji trajektorii oraz wprowadza pojęcie trajektorii bezrobocia, jak również zwraca uwagę na wartość pamiętnikarskiego materiału badawczego. Dociekania bazują na dokumentach osobistych nadesłanych w wyniku konkursów na pamiętniki bezrobotnych – w 1931, 2000 i 2017 roku, które badamy za pomocą metody biograficznej, posiłkując się narzędziem do analizy jakościowej MAXQDA. Trajektorię definiujemy jako przebieg jakiegoś zjawiska i jego ewolucję w czasie, przede wszystkim pod wpływem silnego działania struktur i mechanizmów zewnętrznych, wobec których jednostka pozostaje w ograniczonym stopniu sprawcza. Natomiast w węższym rozumieniu traktujemy ją jako sekwencję przemian w życiu człowieka, wyznaczających zmiany statusu lub pozycji. Wychodzimy od logiki trzystopniowego schematu trajektorii – upadku, trwania oraz sukcesu, aby wskazać na znajdujące się „pomiędzy” nimi trajektoryjne typy. Położenie jednostki na trajektorii sugerujemy określać ze względu na dwie zmienne. Po pierwsze, status i związane z nim punkty zwrotne. Po drugie, Bourdieuowskie kapitały.
The article exploits the theoretical potential of the trajectory idea and proposes the concept of trajectory of unemployment. It also draws attention to the potential of memoirs as research material. The analysis is based on personal documents collected as a result of the competitions for memoirs of the unemployed held in Poland in 1931, 2000 and 2017. The data are examined with the use of the biographical method, the analysis is facilitated with MAXQDA qualitative analysis tools. We define trajectory as unfolding of a phenomenon and its evolution overtime, above all under the strong influence of external structures and mechanisms that depend on an individual’s agency to a limited degree. In the narrower sense, we treat trajectory as a sequence of changes in human life, determining transformations in status or position. We begin with the three-step logic of a trajectory (fall, stand-by and success) in order to indicate the „intermediary” trajectory types. We suggest that the two variables are decisive in locating individuals on trajectories: status and related turning points, and Bourdieu’s capitals.
