Opis:
The authors consider the issue of the relation between personal values and personality traits. They define the term “personal value” and submit their own model of personal values functioning. The authors explain their understanding of the relation between personal values and personality traits. They also state the ideas of previous authors in this sphere. The authors present two original empirical studies focused on the relation of values and traits. The studies were carried out with Slovak secondary school students (N=366) and university students (N=462). The results show that traits and values correlate, but not so distinctly so that this fact would indicate their inter-changeability. Several correlations repeat in various research.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between Big-Five personality traits, perceived self-efficacy (GSES) and dimensions of occupational burnout in accordance with Christina Maslach’s three-factor burnout model (emotional burnout, depersonalization, perceived lack of own accomplishments). Data collected among 271 teachers (82% female) aged 20–68 confirmed findings from previous research that four personality traits (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness) are correlated with burnout and that they are significant predictors for all dimensions of burnout. In addition, it was shown that GSES plays a moderating role as a buffer that protects people with high levels of neuroticism from a sense of lack of own accomplishments. It was also found that GSES plays a mediating role for the relationship between Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Neuroticism and perceived lack of own accomplishments and that it is a suppressor for the relationship of neuroticism with emotional exhaustion. The results are discussed in the context of personality theories and their possible applications.

Opis:
The aim of this work was the further exploration of the relationship between selected personality factors and the preference of a given type of pornography. Data from 136 respondents aged between 19 and 56 years was used for the analysis. Selected personality traits were examined using the TIPI-PL questionnaire. Subjects were presented with 25 categories of pornographic films and were asked to select the keywords they use to search for pornography on the Internet. Data exploration has shown that the viewers of pornographic films are characterized by a significantly higher level of extraversion and emotional stability in relation to people who do not use pornography. In addition, it was shown that openness to experience turned out to be a significant predictor of the preferences of pornographic categories such as „BDSM”, „group sex” or „big penis”. Further research should take into account other features of the human psyche that may be related to pornographic preferences and examine the attractiveness of a given type of pornography.

Opis:
The article is an introduction to the volume devoted to personality traits and their measurement. It consists of two parts. The first part presents two research traditions that use the taxonomy of five personality traits: the lexical tradition (using the term “Big Five”) and the psychometric tradition (using the term “Five-Factor Model of Personality”). Similarities and differences between these traditions are outlined and the basic elements of other models that have appeared in recent studies – such as the Big Six or the Big Two – are introduced in it. The second part of the paper presents selected issues of measurement, discussed in detail in several texts included in the current issue of Annals of Psychology. Special attention is drawn to differences between various questionnaires in the operationalization of the five traits as well as to the growing popularity of short scales for measuring personality traits. The paper also outlines problems involved in the measurement of personality traits and the psychometric instruments used.

Opis:
The paper is a review of current discussion on the Big Five model and new proposals of personality structure description. The discussion concerns three main claims of the Big Five model: (1) the claim about number of basic traits; (2) the claim about the organization of lower-level traits and (2) the claim about relations between the basic traits. Critique of each claim has led to a counterproposal that describes the personality structure in a different way. Critique of the first assumption is supported by the proposal of increasing to six number of basic traits in the HEXACO model (Ashton, Lee, 2001, 2007). Critique of the second assumption is supported by the proposals of different lower-traits organization. The Abridged Big Five Dimensional Circumplex (Hofstee, De Raad, Goldberg, 1992; Goldberg, 1999) and the model of 10 aspects located between the basic five traits and their facets (DeYoung, Quilty, Peterson, 2007) there are reviewed in the paper. The critique of the third assumption argues that the five traits are not orthogonal and the systematical relations between them can be explained by two higher-order factors (Digman, 1997; DeYoung, Peterson, Higgins, 2002) or even one General Factor of Personality (Musek, 2007; Rushton, Irving, 2011).

Opis:
The paper presents the Polish adaptation of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI-P), which is designed to measure five dimensions of personality as described in the Big Five model. The items were translated into Polish from the original English version. The equivalence of the two versions was confirmed in a study conducted on a sample of bilingual students. A series of four independent studies (on a total sample of over 500 students) were conducted to verify the psychometric properties of the Polish version of TIPI. They proved acceptable test-retest reliability of TIPI-P after two weeks. As in the original version of the inventory, the internal consistency coefficients are relatively low. Correlations between TIPI-P and NEO-FFI as well as between self-rating and peer-rating confirm the convergent and discriminant validity of TIPI-P scales. The results of the studies suggest that the Polish adaptation can be used in scientific research conducted on student samples.

What shapes spending styles: demographics, income, or individual psychological traits?

Maison D., 2018, What shapes spending styles: demographics, income, or individual psychological traits?, Rozprawy Ubezpieczeniowe - Konsument na rynku usług finansowych, 29(3), s. 3-26.
Opis:
Financial behaviour is quite often explained by demographic variables (e.g. age, education) and the level of income. It turns out, however, that these variables only partially explain financial behaviour, and analyses that consider psychological variables (such as personality traits, self-control, time perspective) better explain the complexity of financial attitudes and can better predict financial behaviour. This article presents a model of Money Spending Styles based on two dimensions: (a) behavioural: ease of spending and control of expenses, and (b) emotional – emotions accompanying this behaviour (positive vs. negative). The model distinguishes four spending styles: Spendthrift, Belt-tightening, Happy spending, and Thrifty spending. Data presented from qualitative (in-depth individual interviews) and quantitative (surveys on representative samples) research show the difference between these styles as well as their dependency not only on demographic variables and income level, but also on psychological variables (as Big Five personality traits and time perspectives).

IX, June 24 – 28, 2019, Magnanimitas, Hradec Králové, The Czech Republic, s. 817-825. ISBN 978-80-87952-30-6.
Opis:
Short scales are becoming increasingly popular in social and behavioral sciences. Often times they are convenient, valid and reliable which makes them particularly useful in certain contexts, such as large scale surveys. The aim of the study was to investigatie measurement invariance of the Polish version of the Mini-IPIP Shortened Measures of the Big-Five Domains (the Mini-IPIP) between a student sample (927 persons) and an employee sample (723 persons). The instrument consists of 20 items, four for each subscale and has a 5-point Likert-type response format ranging from 1 (Strongly disagree) to 5 (Strongly agree). Data were gathered between 2013 and 2017 as a part of subsequent research projects. The results showed that the scale has satisfactory model fit in both samples and indicated strong measurement invariance between the groups of students and employees. The data supports the validity of the Polish version of the Mini-IPIP.
