Opis:: The aim of the paper is to characterize contemporary transformation of urban greenery, which rely on the image of garden in order to arrive at a “garden-like” character of the cityscape. It also demonstrates how the image of garden is applied in the city as a new tool of social communication in the course of democratic transformation of the urban space. The author discusses the origins of the garden-image and the “garden-like” character of space, providing examples of how it is used today in the cityscape by the inhabitants, activists, designers and artists. The text introduces a range of informal, Polish projects of urban gardens and spaces drawing on its image, describing their novel role in building the vernacular landscape of a city.

Opis:: For Bryan Stanley Johnson, a British post-war avant-garde author, space was a crucial aspect of a literary work. Inspired by architects and film makers, he was convinced that “form follows function” (“Introduction” to Aren’t You Rather Young to Be Writing Your Memoirs) and exercised the book as a material object, thus anticipating liberature – a literary genre defined in 1999 by Zenon Fajfer and Katarzyna Bazarnik, which encompasses works whose authors purposefully fuse the content with the form. The goal of this paper is to analyse the cityscape theme in Johnson’s second novel, Albert Angelo (1964), in which London is presented as space that accompanies the character in his everyday life and becomes a witness of the formation of his identity. The protagonist is an architect by profession, so special attention is paid to his visual sensitivity and the way the cityscape is reflected in his memories. Furthermore, Johnson’s formal exploitation of the book as an object and its correspondence to the content is analysed with reference to the metaphor of “[t]he book as an architectural structure” discussed by Bazarnik in Liberature. A Book-bound Genre.

Opis:: The concept of beauty in the landscape of the city has become relative; the aura of the place, attractiveness, value to attract customers regardless of the time of the day and year became important. Not always the public space gives good energy to the recipient. Sometimes, contrary to the expectations of the originators of consumer offer for this space, it is even considered to be repulsive. The phenomenon of generating good or referred to as bad energy by urban public spaces existing in reality, is an interesting research topic. It can accommodate both the newly created public spaces, old, historic spaces currently being reformed and iconic space. The way to create new successfully cases of public spaces is relying on multidisciplinary studies of the sociology and psychology of architecture.

Opis:: Miejski krajobraz Portugalii w XXI wieku jest zdominowany w dużej części przez procesy rewitalizacji. Geneza przemysłowej epoki produkcji wełny w Covilha sięga XVII wieku. Obszar w latach 1980-tych zaczyna się przekształcać w przestrzeni naukowej. UBI (Uniwersytetu da Beira Interior). Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie różnych form krajobrazu urbanistycznego, uwzględniającego minione stulecia działalności człowieka. Podstawą artykułu jest literatura związana z tematem oraz badania in situ prowadzone w Portugalii od roku 2001 do chwili obecnej.

Tytuł:: LiDAR-based method for analysing landmark visibility to pedestrians in cities : case study in Kraków, Poland

Opis:: We propose a method for analysing landmark visibility from a pedestrian’s perspective. A case study is performed in Kraków, a city with many architectural monuments, where airborne LiDAR is used to model both buildings and urban greenery. The proposed method involves preliminary and detailed stages. The preliminary stage entails an inverse analysis (I-Vis) that departs from the typical visibility analysis to enable the use of landmarks as observers instead of targets. I-Vis results in paths with high landmark visibility. The detailed stage involves the use of a virtual panorama (V-Pan) to determine the visual exposure of the landmarks. Landmarks considered visible by I-Vis are generally consistent with landmarks identified by V-Pan. Discrepancies occur when trees appear in the near field-of-view. In addition, the accuracy of the skyline length and visible landmark surface area is evaluated against ground observations. The obtained results show that V-Pan can evaluate landmark visibility with an accuracy of approximately 75%. The key contributions of the work to visibility analysis of urban landmarks are in the inverse viewshed strategy and evaluation of the visual exposure parameters on LiDAR virtual panoramas.

Opis:: Autor mając świadomość wielu konfliktów, sprzeczności interesów i cywilizacyjnych niebezpieczeństw pomiędzy dziedzictwem przestrzeni a współczesnością uważa, że ochrona i kształtowanie krajobrazu i ekonomiczny rozwój miasta mogą być synergicznie połączone. Uważa, że krajobraz kształtuje i stymuluje rozwój ekonomiczny, dlatego też krajobraz miejski powinien być poddany tym samy prawom, które rządzą rynkiem. Ale należy pamiętać, że krajobraz jest własnością społeczną, wspólnym dobrem, a to znaczy w praktyce, że mechanizmy rynkowe nie zawsze gwarantują zbieżność celów indywidualnych i społecznych.
Being aware of numerous problems, conflicts of interests and civilisational dangers between spatial heritage and modernity, the author believes that protecting and shaping the cityscape and the economic development of cities can be synergically combined. He thinks that landscape shapes and stimulates economic development; therefore cityscape should be subjected to the same laws which rule the market. But one ought to remember, that landscape is a social property, a common good, which means in practice that market mechanisms do not always guarantee the coincidence of individual and social targets.
