Opis:: The article presents a selected aspect of broader sociological empirical research into the issues of family and the phenomenon of cohabitation conducted among the students of the University of Constantine the Philosopher in the Republic of Slovakia and of the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The presented analysis of the survey research results focuses on the determination of the importance of the institution of marriage for the youth belonging to academic environment. The results of the research have proven that in spite of the increasing level of liberalisation of marriage and family life a large percentage of students both from Poland and Slovakia perceived marriage as a valuable institution of high importance to the questioned individuals.

Opis:: W mojej pracy skupiłam się na problematyce kohabitacji, która jest coraz częściej spotykanym zjawiskiem w naszym kraju i na świecie.Obecnie nie ma bogatej literatury, która zostałaby poświęcona związkom nieformalnym. Wynika to z tego, że ciągle preferuje się zawieranie tradycyjnej formy związku, jaką jest związek małżeński.Pierwszy rozdział zatytułowałam: „Rola rodziny w XXI wieku.” Ukazałam w nim rodzinę w dobie przemian. Omówiłam w tym rozdziale między innymi :instytucje singli, związki typu LAT. W ostatnim podrozdziale skupiłam się na zmianach w postrzeganiu kulturowej roli rodzinyW drugim rozdziale mojej pracy poświęciłam się ujęciu definicyjnym kohabitacji, począwszy od jej rysu historycznego. Następnie wyjaśniłam definicję kohabitacji, po czym w ostatnim podrozdziale zestawiłam kohabitację z pojęciem związku małżeńskiego w aspekcie prawnym, ekonomicznym i społecznym.W trzecim rozdziale ukazałam metodologię badań własnych. Określiłam przedmiot i cel badań. Zawarłam w nim problemy i hipotezy badawcze, a także metody, techniki, i narzędzia, jakie stosuje się w badaniach. Przedstawiłam także przebieg własnych badań.Ostatni – czwarty rozdział – poświęcony został analizie przeprowadzonych badań.W swoich badaniach udowadniałam postawioną sobie hipotezę iż związki kohabitacyjne dla osób w nich żyjących są jedynie stanem przejściowym, który w przyszłości chcą zmienić( zalegalizować swój związek). Moja hipoteza została potwierdzona.
In my work I focus on the issues of cohabitation, which is becoming a more common phenomenon in our country and the world.Currently, there is no literature that has been devoted to commonlaw living situations. This is due to the fact that society still prefers that one should only live with their partner when they are united in marriage. The first chapter is titled: "The role of the family in the twenty-first century. " Here it is discussed how the family undergoes change. In this chapter I discuss: singles and living apart together (LAT) relationships . The last section of this chapter is focused on the changes in the perception of the cultural role of the family.The second chapter of my work is devoted to understanding the definitional term of cohabitation , beggining from its historical roots. There I explain the definition of cohabitation and in the last section I compare cohabitation with the concept of marriage in a legal, economic and social manner.The third chapter explaines my research methodology. I describe the purpose of the study and locate the problems within the current research and hypotheses. I outline the methods, techniques, and tools used in the research. I also included the materials and methods used in my own research and my results.The last chapter is devoted to the analysis of the study . I have proven in my research, the hypothesis that people in a common law relationship view this as a transitory state in their lives and that they intend to formally legalize their relationship through marriage.

Opis:: The article presents a review of current findings connected with phenomenon of cohabitation. It aims to define this form of close relationship between partners who do not decide to marry, but also between couples who treat cohabitation only as a temporary period. Nowadays, informal relationships are becoming definitely more and more popular. In the bigger urban areas, living together without a wedding is not a surprising solution. The article, based on the current results, tries to indicate how this solution affects the durability and overall functioning of a close relationship. The aim of the article is also to present current knowledge regarding differences in the level of durability and satisfaction with formal and informal relationships.

Opis:: Marriage and cohabitation are the two most common forms of partnership in Europe. We examined the extent to which marriage and cohabitation are studied from a demographic perspective and to identify differences across European countries. The methodology was established on a keyword search and four phases of preference indicator, based on which we selected 85 articles and incorporate them into the literature review. As determined by the literature review, we identified seven areas: Cohabitation, Marriage, Union Formation, Migrant Partnership Behavior, Fertility, Divorce, and Second Demographic Transition. The influence of society plays a significant role in forming the attitudes and aspirations of individuals in each area of life, and for some, even in the most important, which is starting a family and getting married or not, and on the other hand, in individual aspirations and modern lifestyles.

Opis:: Celem badań było określenie stylów komunikacyjnych partnerów ze związków kohabitacyjnych. Zbadano 120 par heteroseksualnych (240 osób), żyjących w związku kohabitacyjnym. Grupę kontrolną stanowiło 140 małżeństw (280 osób). W sumie przebadano 520 osób w wieku od 21 do 44 lat. Do badań wykorzystano Macierz Stylów Społecznych (MSS) D.W. Merrilla i R. Reida. Wyniki badań wykazały, że zachowania komunikacyjne partnerów zależą od charakteru ich relacji. Partnerów kohabitujących charakteryzują zachowania komunikacyjne o większej asertywności i mniejszej wrażliwości niż małżonków.
The objective of the research was to analyse communication styles in cohabitation relationships. The group of 120 heterosexual couples (240 people) living in an informal relationship was examined. The control group consisted of 140 marriages (280 people). In total 520 people aged 21-44 were examined. In the study there was used the Social Style Matrix (MMS) by D. W. Merrill and R. Reid. Results of the analysis indicated that communication styles of partners depend on the character of their relation. Partners in non-marital relationships are identified with higher assertiveness and lower sensibility in communication behaviour in comparison with married people.

Opis:: Pathologies and abuses accompany elections and are connected with the electoral system both in its narrow and broad sense. Moreover, they stem from a human nature and a degree of democratic principles consolidation. Cohabitation is conditioned by the electoral system and, in the case of the proportional allocation of seats, it arises more often than in the majority system with single member constituencies. The phenomenon itself is not always pathological. However, such an adverse situation develops when it comes to clashes, neither substantive nor creative, between the municipal bodies and, in consequence, the interests of the local community are jeopardised. Elections at the municipal level are also accompanied by other pathologies and abuses including: coercing votes when voting by proxy, adding voters to an electoral roll, bringing residents to a polling place, paying for one’s votes, preying on the naïvety of voters which can take grotesque forms or brutalising an election campaign caused by the mediatisation of local policy. The above-mentioned phenomena were examined and presented in the paper based on the analysis of statistical data, articles from the local press and, most essentially for the discussed subject, a rich material collected thanks to the in-depth interviews conducted by the authors.

Opis:: The authors discuss in the article interpersonal communication in cohabitation relationships of women with a borderline personality disorder. 91 women aged between 21 and 40 who were in a consensual relationship participated in the research. The classification of the respondents to the criterion group was determined by the result obtained in the Borderline Personality Inventory (BPI) by F. Leichsenring in the Polish adaptation of Lidia Cierpiałkowska. 43 women were included in the criterion group, and the control group consisted of 48 women. The research also used the Marriage and Partnership Communication Questionnaire by Maria Kaźmierczak and Mieczysław Plopa. The analysis of the obtained results showed that women with borderline personality disorder show more depressing and less supportive and engaged communication behaviors compared to women without this disorder, both in self-perception and in the assessment of the partner’s communication behavior.

Opis:: Due to the changes in the modern family, many children are brought up in non-traditional families. Cohabitation is one of the alternative forms of the family. The results of the studies on the welfare of children raised in cohabitation relationships are not conclusive, yet the data indicate poorer developmental achievements of these children in comparison with children brought up by married couples are predominant. The article presents the results of research which compares the welfare of children in different forms of relationships and points to three possible reasons for lower developmental achievements of children raised by cohabiting partners. These include: characteristics of the partners, characteristics of the cohabitation relationships and the way of selecting a group for a study which compares the welfare of children in different forms of families, connecting cohabiting partners who are the child’s biological parents with those persons forming cohabitation relationships in which only one of the partners is the child’s natural parent.

Opis:: Although cohabitation is increasingly common in Poland, it is usually considered a transitional, testing stage that leads to marriage, which constitutes the preferred form of family life in the country. Does it mean that couples who do not choose to marry are perceived as somewhat “worse” than those tying the knot? Using qualitative data from focus group interviews with 69 men and women aged 25–40, I aimed to answer the following questions: What are social perceptions of couples who have already “tested” their relationship, but still live together and refrain from marriage? In particular, what are the motives attributed to such couples and how – if at all – these motives are linked to the quality of the relationships? There were four themes related to such motives identified in the analysed material: (1) the perception of marriage as an unnecessary expense that does not change anything in a relationship, or even makes things worse; (2) fear of an ultimate commitment; (3) uncertainty whether this is the right partner and the resulting low level of commitment in the relationship; (4) rejection of traditional gender roles. Commitment appears central in the analysed discussions suggesting that this concept should constitute an important topic in future studies on unions in Poland.
