Second-generation Iranian Zoroastrians in a new American homeland : a case study in California
Autorzy:
Niechciał, Paulina
Opis:
The article contributes to filling the research gap concerning Iranian Zoroastrians in diaspora. Using a narrative approach, it explores how second-generation Zoroastrians raised in the United States learn and practice religion while facing the challenges of a pluralistic American society. The article includes a case study of two young Zoroastrian women interviewed in 2019, members of the Californian com- munity. The contrastive cases shed light on the internal heterogeneity of Zoroastrianism, different ways the religion is perceived and experienced, and different ideas about future preservation of the ethno-religious heritage. The study contributes to an understanding of how Zoroastrianism evolves on a new continent and how it differs from what Zoroastrian immigrants brought from Iran.

Opis:
Border and missionary practice are two historical realities that proceed simultaneously in the colonization of the Americas. After analyzing the most recent debate on the liminal issue in the New World, the essay attempts to elucidate, from a descriptive and comparative perspective, the Mexican border missionary framework, thought of as a social, historical and geographical space not yet permanently conquered. Three missionary realities are discussed: Chiapas, the Yaqui region and California.

Opis:
The article is an analysis of the translation of the poem A Supermarket in California (Supermarket w Kaliforni), the only poem by Allen Ginsberg translated by Stanisław Barańczak. In the critical works of the author of Facial Corrections (Korekta twarzy) the beatnik’s poetics is contrasted with the poetry of Robert Frost and James Merill – writers crucially important to the translator. Despite this, A Supermarket… enriched Barańczak’s anthology of American Poetry published in 1998. The translator’s key choice appears to be the use of a conversational idiom, placing the poem opposite the ‘howling’ diction from the flagship poems of the author of Howl. The testaments of a dialogue with tradition is what Barańczak seeks in it; he is most interested in the formal and semantic bows to the father of American poetry. What Barańczak makes the semantic dominant is, rather than the structure of the text or the images evoked in it, Whitman’s patronage with all its consequences.

Opis:
A prosecuting attorney in a democracy is very important in the processing of criminal cases- from pre-filing to final appeal. Much of the involvement of the District Attorney, both before a criminal case is filed, and during the prosecution of the case, stems from the “Exclusionary Rule”. It is the usual case that the police will bring their investigation, their arrest warrant or search warrant affidavit to a District Attorney to review it prior to taking it to the judge. In this connection, District Attorneys will themselves reject 5-10% of the warrant requests submitted to them for approval, often asking law enforcement to do some further investigation before resubmitting the warrant. Furthermore, because of the Doctrine of Separation of Powers, only the District Attorney or the California State Attorney General can make the decision to file or not file a case. This Article illustrates the impact of such discretion. The problem of democracy is strictly connected to the process of DA’s selection, what has also been here presented. Another fundamental issue is a role of DA in voir dire, mainly because jury trials are guaranteed by the federal Constitution and are associated with the idea of democracy. Separation of Powers and Judicial Control of the DA, the police, and the sentencing of those convicted of crimes have been analyzed from the perspective of the California law. Additionally, the article includes final comments on the technological progress and its impact on criminal law and democracy. All the conclusions have been made in reference to Author’s experience as Assistant DA in California.

Opis:
The paper aimed at the determination of the California Bearing Ratio of a stabilised and unstabilised fine-grained mineral soil. A clayey-sandy silt with the addition of 3, 6 and 10% of road stabilisers Solidex and Solidex A was used for the tests. The tests were carried out in the press Tritech 50 at the loading of 22 and 44 N. The stabilised samples were subjected to 7-days treatment, whereas unstabilised 4-days treatment. Stabilization with the applied road binders brought positive effects, there occurred a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the clayey-sandy silt. The better binder, which significantly increased the value of the CBR ratio, was Solidex A. The use of hydraulic binders is of a great importance in road building, because their addition improves the mechanical properties of weaker mineral soils.

Opis:
Geographical research on French and US suburbia has concentrated in recent decades on urban sprawl and concomitant processes of devaluation and exclusion. In the case of the French banlieues, with their much-publicised urban riots, this particular analytic focus has become overwhelming, with resultant loss to other developments and perspectives. However, certain districts in the first (or inner) ring of both French and US suburbia are currently showing distinct urbanisation tendencies in planning and architecture, evident in the new usage of brownfield sites and the ongoing demolition, replacement, and rededication of the older building core. Such processes induce population changes, e.g. the displacement of lower in favour of higher income groups. Overall, they result in an architectonic, social and cultural heterogeneity that escapes the specificity of received categories and merits the term hybridisation. The article describes and compares these processes as exemplified in Greater Paris and San Diego (Southern California).

Opis:
The paper draws an outline of the phenomenon of the Mural Movement in California (US). grunted experiences of Mexican mural and a giant mural program run in the 1930s on the 20th century within limits of New deal plan had big influence on its development. Murals themes often touches social issues, but also ranges to landscapes, fauna and flora themes, image of illusions of elevation decorations and widely considered history of the place. Portraits and group scenes, symbols of popular culture, loosely composed quotations from historical painting appear there. Various artistic currents such as: realism, op-art, hyperrealism, expressionism, cubism pop-art geometrical abstractionism and graffiti motives have their reflection in mural art. For many murals the leading motive is an element of humour and graphical humour. Murals are inseparable element of a landscape of Californian cities - both huge agglomerations and provincial settlements. Many places promote their mural as touristic attraction. the fact that many murals, especially those which are commonly acknowledged, is regularly restored and renewed proves that statement.
