Opis:: This article presents the development of the meaning of arete in the sources from Homer to Albinus (VIII B.C. - II A.D.), which, together with changes happening in the economical, social, political and cultural life of the ancient Greece, began to mean all that gives to a person or to a thing a special value: a bodilly one, a practical, moral and intellectual one. Moreover, the way leading to achievement of arete, as well as the values resulting from its possession, has been presented.

Opis:: The persecutions of Jesus and the members of the ancient Church are well attested by Christian (New Testament, early patristic) and Jewish (early rabbinic) sources. The present article, using these sources, tries to answer the question: what are the motifs and forms of Jewish persecutions in the time of Jesus and after His death in the early Christian communities? In the center of this polemic is the person of Jesus and new optics of issues crucial for Judaism such as: monotheism, the observance of Torah, the Temple, election, covenant and relation to the new believers from the pagan world. The persecutions have the forms of verbal (insults, derisions, slander) and physical (excommunication from the Synagogue, proceedings at courts, flogging, imprisonment, murders) attacks. The author puts the emphasis on the polemic aspects of the relation between the Synagogue and the Church in the early stage of their development. The battle for the identity of the true Israel (verus Israel), between two religious communities, leads to hostility and separation. Taking this issue into consideration is the basis for authentic dialogue between Judaism and Christianity today.

Opis:: This article provides the editio princeps of an Old Nubian land sale discovered in Gebel Adda in 1966. The document details the sale of several plots of land to and by a woman called Sewamē and her son Newarē. The first part of the sale contains a short description of the sale, followed by an extended curse containing several terms not previously attested in Old Nubian. The second part starts with an invocation of the Trinity in Greek and Old Nubian, followed by the protocol and a second, expanded description of the sale. This is followed by a list of witnesses and (largely illegible) signature of the scribe. After a transcription, translation, and grammatical analysis of the text, there is an extended commentary of its linguistic features and the question of its dating.

Opis:: Celem rozważań jest wykazanie, że rekonstrukcja narodowej tożsamości i wzmacniania suwerenności Polaków, a taki projekt realizuje Rząd PiS, to daremna próba przywrócenia etycznej wagi patriotyzmu we współczesnym polskim społeczeństwie i kulturze. Daremność tego przedsięwzięcia widać wyraźnie w kontekście ponowoczesności, w której idea patriotyzmu utraciła niewinność. Miłość ojczyzny nie jest prawem, którego można przestrzegać dosłownie, raczej tylko regułą, której można dowieść poprzez wyjątki. Miłości nie można nakazać, nie sposób jej stworzyć za pośrednictwem imperatywu lub konieczności. Mamy do czynienia z sytuacją, w której blednie wyobrażenie narodu jako wspólnoty kulturowej, a to prowadzi do utraty poczucia odpowiedzialności za naród jako wartość przez członków narodu. Nie zniweluje tego zalecana edukacja humanistyczna, bowiem współcześnie wspólnota kulturowa staje się obszarem kulturowego przymusu i może przetrwać poprzez ograniczenie wolności swoich członków. Potrzebna jest edukacja globalna, w której nie ma miejsca na "klasyczny" patriotyzm.
The aim of these deliberations is to show that reconstruction of the national identity and strengthening of the sovereignty of Poles (i.e., a project implemented by the current government) is a pointless attempt to restore an ethical accent to patriotism in contemporary Polish socjety. The futility of this endeavor is clearly manifest within the context of postmodernity in which the idea of patriotism has lost its integrity. Love can neither be commanded, nor created by an imperative or necessity. Hence, love of one’s homeland is not a law that can be followed literally, but rather a rule proven by its exceptions. We are thus facing a situation in which the nation is erroneously imagined as a cultural community which leads to a lost sense of responsibility for the nation as a value upheld by its members. This cannot be offset by the recommended humanistic education, because today’s cultural community is becoming a space of cultural coercion: the group can survive only by limiting the freedom of its members. The type of education needed is a global one in which there is no place for patriotism.

Opis:: The democratic Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia stipulates a strict separation of church and state. After the independence in 1991, a strong process of secularization is noticed. The number of people who declared themselves Catholic declined drastically in the last two decades. Some reasons both from inside the Church and outside of it are analysed in the first part of the paper. In the second part, the author presents from his personal perspectivesome ways to contribute as a theologian to the public ethical discourse in the secularized society. He emphasizes the need for the argumentative and understandable statements. Theological vocabulary should be translated to the language that today’s people could understand. Last the author presents his work as a theologian at the State University, in the National Bioethics Committee and in the field of education. Theological ethics is a bridge between the rich moral tradition of the church and the contemporary secular society. The theologian needs to be both humble and conscious of our social determinism, but also courageous to propose some alternative solutions in collaborating with other social agents for the common good in society. Christian anthropology is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for building a better world for everyone.
Demokratyczna konstytucja Republiki Słowenii określa ścisły rozdział Kościoła i państwa. Po uzyskaniu przez Słowenię niepodległości w 1991 r. można zaobserwować silny proces sekularyzacji. Liczba ludzi, którzy deklarują swój katolicyzm, spadła drastycznie w ostatnich dwóch dekadach. W pierwszym punkcie niniejszego tekstu autor analizuje niektóre przyczyny tego stanu, znajdujące się zarówno po stronie Kościoła, jak i poza nim. W kolejnym punkcie autor prezentuje z perspektywy własnych doświadczeń niektóre elementy wkładu teologa do publicznej debaty etycznej w zsekularyzowanym społeczeństwie. Podkreśla przy tym konieczność zrozumiałych i uzasadnionych stanowisk. Słownictwoużywane w teologii powinno zostać przetłumaczone na język zrozumiały dla ludzi współcześnie żyjących. Na końcu autor prezentuje swoją działalność jako teologa na państwowym uniwersytecie, w narodowym komitecie bioetycznym i w obszarze edukacji. Etyka teologiczna jest pomostem między bogatą tradycją moralną Kościoła i współczesnym, zsekularyzowanym społeczeństwem. Teologowie powinni być pokorni i świadomi swojej misji społecznej, ale także odważni w proponowaniu alternatywnych rozwiązań we współpracy z innymi działaczami społecznymi na rzecz dobra wspólnego w społeczeństwie. Antropologia chrześcijańska jest niewyczerpanym źródłem inspiracji dla budowy lepszego światadla wszystkich.
