Opis:
Currently, companies must change and evolve to keep pace with the changing environment, customers’ requirements and to be better than their competitors. The changes result from the need to adapt the products to new customers’ requirements as well as to maintain competitive prices of their products. Therefore, companies should be flexible to guarantee short lead time and minimalize their costs to offer a good price for the customers. At the same time, companies should create good work environment for their employees in order to get them involved in improvement processes. In order to survive and develop companies should motivate and involve their employees into a continuous improvement process in different areas of the company. Unfortunately, as based on the companies’ practice and previous research, in many cases employees are not willing to engage in the company development. Continuous improvement is the basis of the philosophy of Quality Management and Lean Manufacturing, which come from Toyota Production System (TPS). The TPS eventually spread throughout the world, and it is held up as an example of the proper management of a production system. The assumptions of TPS system were used to build systems in other companies, but not always with the same success as it was in Toyota. For this reason, the authors of this paper seek to answer the question of whether there are differences in engagement in a continuous improvement process between employees in a Japanese company and a Polish company operating in the same industry and realizing the similar manufacturing. In order to verify this, the research was conducted in two manufacturing companies which operate in the automotive industry. The results of the study and their analysis are presented in the work.

Opis:
Lean has established itself as the primordial approach to obtain operational excellence. Its simple and intuitive techniques focus on reducing lead time through continuous improvement, involving all levels of employees in the organization. However, the rate of successful implementations has remained low. This paper contributes to the understanding of continuous improvement in a Lean context, by analyzing a database of almost 10.000 improvement actions, from 85 companies, covering the time frame 2010–2018. It discusses categories of actions, their impact and cost, as well as key characteristics of the companies. It proposes an objective criterion to identify “success” and “failure” in Lean implementation and tries to link these to operational results. It is probably the first time an analysis of this magnitude on the subject has been performed.

Opis:

Developing the Lean attitude : case study of training role at the university
Autorzy:
Słowik, Lubomir

Opis:
Purpose: This paper investigates how Lean training fosters the Lean attitude among university employees, focusing on the motives and barriers influencing this transformation. Emphasis is placed on understanding the change process, the conditions for its success and its effects. Design/methodology/approach: An integrative literature review and case study approach were employed. Document analysis covered the period from 2017 to 2023. In 2023, an interview questionnaire was conducted among university employees who had participated in Lean training between 2019 and 2023. A total of 38 respondents completed the survey. Data were analysed using content analysis (open and axial coding) and statistical techniques. Findings: Lean training had a positive impact on work attitudes in cognitive, affective and behavioural dimensions. However, due to existing barriers, these changes remained confined to individual workplaces. This limitation negatively affected job satisfaction, willingness to continue working, perceived career development opportunities and sense of agency. Preliminary statistical modelling suggests that the affective dimension of the Lean attitude primarily influences Lean behaviours. Originality: This case study provides novel insights into the development of the Lean attitude through training, an area underexplored in management theory, especially in public universities. The study introduces the Lean Attitude Transformation Model (LATM), tailored to higher education, and supported by a newly developed survey tool. Practical implications: Understanding the mechanisms behind Lean attitude development enables managers to foster a culture of continuous improvement through effective training programmes, eliminating barriers and reinforcing motivation. Research limitations: This study simplifies the attitude concept to illustrate its transformation process clearly. Statistical analyses are preliminary due to the small sample size.

Lean management and the change of work culture : the case of a Polish university
Autorzy:

Khalifa University
Opis:
Purpose: The main goal of this paper is to identify the process of changes that occur in universities as a result of the implementation and functioning of the lean management concept in the area of work culture. There is a lack of such research focused on higher education institutions, especially arts universities, which have their own specific rules based on the master-student relationship. The educational process is tailored to the needs of students, teachers and society at large. Consequently, this form of education is not only very unique, but also very expensive. In research on higher education, there is a theoretical gap concerning the definition of work culture and its perception by university employees, as well as the elements, factors and consequences of the Lean implementation process. Study design/methodology/approach: The study was based on a used questionnaire and interviews. An additional method was an analysis of the university’s documentation and the researchers’ notes. Statistical methods were used to analyse the participants’ responses provided in the questionnaire. Data were collected as part of a research project carried out at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz during the years 2019-2022. Findings: The preliminary results of the research show that the implementation of the Lean concept changes the work culture at the university in different ways. The changes are perceived as either positive or negative. They are mainly related to technical, organisational and social dimensions. The positives are that people started to use new tools, e.g. Kanban, the relations among them strengthened, cross functional communication became more intensive and effective, and the willingness to take a risk related to improvements increased. The changes could also be perceived as oppression and compulsion caused by the pressure sourced by managers and colleagues. Research limitations/implications: Limitations are related to the applied research methods (opinions can be subjective). In addition, the article describes only a case of applied solutions (no possibility of assigning the results to any other organisation). Originality/value: This is the first ever research conducted in Poland on this subject. The findings provide new insights into the relation between the work culture and Lean implementations.

Opis:
There is a growing interest in the idea of continuous improvement, both in the area of theory and practice of management. The involvement of the employees is one of key factors for the effective implementation of this idea. The paper aims to present the ways of increasing commitment of the employees for improvement actions and indicate potential problems in this area. Literature studies and analysis of a case study of a large company operating in the food industry have been carried out, showing that there is no continuous improvement without committed employees, therefore managers need to shape this commitment. The audited company undertakes many activities to engage employees in improvements and already noticed many benefits. However, the company is also aware of the negative consequences of these actions. The need to follow this direction is beyond doubt, but this has to be done deliberately and carefully.
