Opis:
Observation of many irregularities in nutrition and disorders of the organ functions, which result from an excessive level of body fat motivates or even imposes the necessity of looking for new ways of prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity. This work presents the effect of food with the addition of fructose (30%), fat (30%) and Cornus mas fruit lyophilizate (10%) and Aronia juice addition on selected parameters of fat tissue oxidative stress in Wistar rats. The work calculated caloric demand for the tested animals fed with the control, fructose and high-fat diet with and without the addition of Cornus mas fruit and Aronia juice. In the tested groups the total antioxidative capacity of fat tissue, determined with the FRAP method, the activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase and the level of glutathione were marked. In plasma of the tested animals biochemical parameters were also marked, such as: total cholesterol, concentration of high-density lipoprotein, the level of triglycerides, concentration of urea and uric acid and glucose levels. It was observed in the conducted research, that an addition of Aronia juice to the high-fat diet caused a significant increase of UA concentration in the AJ group. Cornus mas introduced to the control diet also caused a significant increase of that parameter in the CD group. The conducted experiment shows that the CAT and SOD enzyme activity in the fat tissue homogenate depended on the type of addition introduced to the base feed. The lowest use of feed and the lowest body mass increase was observed in the animal group with high-fat diet and aronia juice (AJ group).

Opis:
The history of taxonomy and problems with identification of two very similar and closely related dogwoods Cornus alba and C. sericea are discussed. They were described by Linnaeus on the basis of flowering cultivated specimens of unknown origin. When characterizing their fruits, Linnaeus got the information from the older, “pre-Linnean”, literature and wrote that they were white in C. alba (Linné 1767) and black in C. sericea (Linné 1771). It was soon pointed out that both taxa had white fruits, however, their specific identity has not been questioned for a long time. Cornus alba and C. sericea are considered to be geographically isolated – the former is recorded from Siberia and NE Europe, while the latter from North America, but both dogwoods are often cultivated and naturalize in many places outside their natural ranges. In European dendrological literature, in which both plants are usually mentioned, there are permanent controversies concerning the differences between them. Attempts are still made to distinguish them, mainly on the basis of their stones and leaf shapes. Narrow stones and abruptly narrowed leaf apex have been attributed to C. alba, while broad stones have been said to be characteristic to C. sericea. Our analysis reveals that shapes of stones of discussed taxa are very variable and their ranges of variability overlap to a considerable extent. The similar kind of variability can be observed in the shape of leaves of both dogwoods. In C. alba leaf blades are most often broadly elliptic and abruptly narrowed, while in C. sericea they are most often broadly ovate and gradually narrowed at the apex. It must be said that there are also numerous exceptions to the above scheme. The filigree pattern of cuticle and the wax crystals on the abaxial leaf surface are sometimes useful for distinguishing C. alba and C. sericea. Unfortunately both features are also variable as those characterized above. Taking into consideration the great similarity of discussed dogwoods and difficulties with their identification, in our opinion the broad species concept of C. alba (including C. sericea) is most reliable and practical. However, as it appears from presented results, both taxa are not fully identical, so the rank of subspecies proposed by Wangerin (1910) – C. alba L. subsp. alba and C. alba subsp. stolonifera (Michx.) Wangerin, seems to be most appropriate in their case. It facilitates identification of wild plants of C. alba s.l. both in flowers and fruit as well as in the vegetative state. It also helps avoid controversy with the classification of cultivars of uncertain origin.

Opis:
Cornelian cherry is a little-known plant that can be grown in Poland both on a commercial and amateur scale. The commercial cornelian cherry plantations should be established using selected cultivars or vegetatively propagated valuable ecotypes, as only this guarantees a uniform yield, maturation and standardization of fruit quality. The experiment was carried out in 2014 and 2015 in the private plantation of cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) located in Dąbrowica, near Lublin (22.454 N; 51.270 E). The subject of the research were ecotypes No.: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15 obtained as seedlings in 1998. Cornelian cherry plants obtained from seeds differed very much in the yield and quality of fruit. The fruit characteristics for the examined ecotypes ranged to 1.63–2.21g for fruit weight, 1.30–1.61 for fruit shape index, 10.13–15.32% for content of stone, 17.85–22.68% for soluble solids content (SSC), 2.32–3.0% for titratable acidity (TA), 6.59–8.36 for SSC/TA, 54.9–75.97 for vitamin C content. Among the ecotypes studied in terms of external fruit features, ecotypes No. 3 and 4 were distinguished due to the largest fruits (mass and diameter) and relatively small share of the stone in the whole mass of the fruit. However, due to the chemical composition, the fruits of ecotype No. 5 were distinguished by the content of extract, extract to acids ratio, sugar, dry matter, anthocyanins and vitamin C content. These fruits enjoyed 55% strong acceptability among adults. The indicated ecotypes can be used in breeding as well as in nursery for obtaining valuable varieties of cornelian cherry for production in Poland.

Opis:
The biology of flowering and the micromorphology of Cornus alba flowers were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. The flowering of white dogwood in 2008 lasted 35 days, and the lifespan of a single flower was 3 days. The number of flowers per inflorescence was variable (on the average, it was 89). The largest group of insects visiting the flowers of C. alba comprised Hymenoptera (mainly bees and andrenids), then ants, dipterans and beetles. They foraged the dogwood flowers most intensively between 11.00 and 15.00. The inconspicuous four-petalled flowers of C. alba were characterised by the occurrence of T-shaped, two-armed non-glandular trichomes covering the receptacle as well as observed on the petals of the corolla, the style of the pistil and the anthers in a smaller number. The trichomes were covered by a thick cuticle with characteristic outgrowths. They contained a living protoplast, and plastids were observed in the cytoplasm of the trichome cells. In addition, anomocytic stomata were found in the epidermis of the receptacle and in the epidermis of the corolla petals. The stigma of the pistil and the adaxial epidermis of the petals were composed of very numerous conical papillae.
Badano biologię kwitnienia oraz mikromorfologię kwiatów Cornus alba przy zastosowaniu mikroskopii świetlnej oraz skaningowej elektronowej. Kwitnienie derenia białego w roku 2008 trwało 35 dni, a długość życia pojedynczego kwiatu wyniosła 3 dni. Liczba kwiatów w kwiatostanie była zmienna (średnio wynosiła 89). Najliczniejszą grupą owadów odwiedzających kwiaty C. alba były błonkówki (pszczoły i pszczolinki), następnie mrówki, muchówki i chrząszcze. Zawierały żywy protoplast, a w cytoplazmie komórek włosków obserwowano plastydy. W epidermie dna kwiatowego i abaksialnej epidermie płatków korony występowały ponadto anomocytyczne aparaty szparkowe. Znamię słupka, jak i adaksialną epidermę płatków korony budowały bardzo liczne stożkowate brodawki (papille).

Opis:
The studies were conducted on Cornus alba L. in the years 1999–2001 in the green areas on two sites: with heavy traffic (site A) and no traffic (site B). C. alba was the host plant for two species of aphids: Anoecia corni (F.) and Aphis salicariae Koch. A. corni was dominating in the years of observations and it was most numerous in 2000, while A. salicariae in 1999. The weather had a significant effect on the aphid population. After a mild winter and warm spring aphids were more numerous. High temperatures (over 30°) and stormy rainfalls as well as autumn ground frosts limited their population. On the other hand, aphidophagous species did not limit the population of aphids in any considerable manner. A. corni lowered the ornamental values of C. alba shrubs, especially in autumn.
Dekoracyjność krzewów znacznie obniżała A. corni, zwłaszcza jesienią.

Opis:
The quality of leaves as food for insects is affected both by plant species and the light conditions present during growth. Little information exists concerning the impact of these factors on the diversity of insects that live in the forest understory. We studied arthropod fauna on six understory plant species commonly occurring in Europe. Different groups of herbivorous insects were identified, as well as predatory insects and arachnids. We analysed the influence of both plant species and light conditions during growth (low light; high light) on the species spectrum, and the number of insect specimens present. The resulting data were investigated in relation to the susceptibility of plant leaves to feeding by folivorous insects, as determined in earlier studies. We compared the similarity in species diversity, based on the Sørensen’s coefficient, and discussed the potential causes of observed differences in leaf damages. We found a total of 153 arthropod taxa on studied plants, under both light conditions. Corylus avellana and Prunus serotina, species characterized by greater leaf damage, have a wider diversity of arthropod species, and a greater number of herbivorous insects. Generally, light conditions had a greater effect on arthropod abundance than on species diversity. For two plant species, C. avellana and P. serotina, light conditions strongly, but reversely, influenced the total number of insects and, thus, the extent of leaf damage. The number and abundance of zoophagous species, and ratio to folivores (except C. avellana) are associated more with plant species than with light conditions
