Engineering Emotions. Ivar Hagendoorn’s Cognitive Improvisation and Emergent Choreography Magdalena Zamorska disagrees with some points made in Gabriela Karolczak’s article O choreografowaniu empatii i neuronach lustrzanych (A Few Arguments on Choreographing Empathy and on Mirror Neurons, “Didaskalia” 2012, no. 112). Zamorska argues that Karolczak misinterprets the basic assumptions of neuroesthetics. She refers to the theories of a Dutch choreographer, photographer and scientist, Ivar Hagendoorn, who carried out research on the neurological aspects of aesthetic experience in a specific environment of the reception of dance performance. The article summarises the theories concerning cognitive improvisation techniques inspired by the analytical method of dance improvisation created by William Forsythe. To this theory of the shaping of the dance patterns dynamics Hagendoorn adds some new principles which can prove useful in creating the emergent choreography – that is the system in which the synchronisation emerges as a result of the interaction of the individual dancing agents.

Opis:
The paper is aimed at assessing the influence of rehabilitation on health of ballroom dancers after sports injuries. At the turn of 2014 and 2015 ballroom dancers from all around Poland were questioned. The surveyed were professional dancers aged between 13 and 30 years. As many as 63 athletes were injured during their career. The rehabilitation of 47 of them took place in the rehabilitation centre under physiotherapeutic supervision. Only 16 of the injured rehabilitated on their own. The opinion poll based on the survey was used as a method. The questionnaire included closed and open questions which were to show the influence of injury and its treatment on future sports career. Questions were detailed and referred to the kinds of injuries and their causes, the process of treatment, duration of rehabilitation, its process and results. Questionnaire results were analysed statistically with the use of the Pearson’s chi-squared test. It has been proved that rehabilitation under physiotherapeutic supervision has positive influence on health of ballroom dancers after injuries. Specialist rehabilitation of sportsmen after sports injuries contributed to the shortening of time of the recuperation and to the complete recovery. The time of recovery of the injured who did not undergo the professional rehabilitation was longer, and it was impossible to restore lost functions in the group of 5% of the surveyed, which resulted in the end of their career. Dancers after sports injures should always undergo professional rehabilitation under the sports doctor’s and physiotherapist’s supervision.

Communications technologies constantly shape one’s ways of using the body and one’s perceptual-cognitive habits. The art of dance allows us to inspect how the body and technology co-mingle, to try out new connections, and to elaborate on the borders of cultural approval of change. Involving technologies in creative practice and in performances is becoming a more and more common practice. Contemporary dance artists not only use electronic and digital tools, but also take over some mechanisms that allow them to transform the audience’s experiences developed in the area of new communications technologies.

Flamenco Dance Academies in Seville : a transcultural exchange field
Autorzy:
Romanowska, Jadwiga
Opis:
The objective of this text is to present flamenco dance academies in Seville as a field of transcultural exchange. The theoretical framework is provided by two concepts: Wolfgang Welsch’s idea of transculturality and Francisco Aix Gracia’s concept of the ‘flamenco field’ (campo flamenco). Flamenco dance academies serve functions that extend well beyond the mere execution of dance instructions – they are institutions where individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, including foreigners, Andalusians, Andalusian Roma, and Spaniards from outside Andalusia, interact and negotiate their cultural identity. Flamenco dance schools also may be considered as transcultural platforms for the renegotiation of elements integral to the identities of foreign dancers, including lifestyle, behaviour, language, body, movement, and expression.

EMPOWERMENT (UPODMIOTOWIENIE) KOBIET NA PRZYKŁADZIE ZAJĘĆ POLE DANCE W KRAKOWSKICH STUDIACH TAŃCA – UJĘCIE KULTUROWE
WOMENS EMPOWERMENT BY POLE DANCE CLASSES IN DANCE SCHOOLS IN KRAKÓW - CULTURAL VIEW
Autorzy:
Krystek, Aleksandra
Opis:
This document focuses on the release plane which is the empowerment of women in the context of the dance pole dance. Pole dance is a physical activity, known around the world today, but still increasing it momentum in Poland. An unusual alternative for fitness classes or gym. Schools of pole dance present an attractive offer, directing it mainly to the female population. Is very absorbing to analyze Pole dance classes in context of women’s empowerment because those places exude femininity. The research, conducted as part of this work, shows that the environment of the dancers and the dance itself affects the strengthening of individual women, as well as its sense of unity with the remaining students. Therefore, empowerment of women is pronounced in areas where they have a chance to spread their wings, and support each other. Aside from the issue of strengthening, Pole Dance issues in this trial are also presented on a historic basis. It was to explain the source of pejorative connotations with pole dance was identified in the past.

Opis:
The last decade of the 20th century marked a turning-point in the development of Polish contemporary dance. In 1991, Jacek Luminski established the Silesian Dance Theatre in Bytom. The theatre is said to have been the avant-garde of all activities around contemporary dance in Poland. It was J. Luminski and his theatre that set new trends in contemporary dance of the early 1990s, at the same time having fulfilled educational purposes for the last twenty years. The aim of this article is to present the artistic and educational activity of the Silesian Dance Theatre of the last twenty years. It first presents a choreographic portrait of J. Luminski, founder and choreographer of the Silesian Dance Theatre, the creator of the Polish contemporary dance technique. Then, this paper analyses Luminski’s dance style and reviews the Silesian Dance Theatre’s choreographic achievements. The final part of the article discusses a wide spectrum of educational activities undertaken in the field of contemporary professional dance by the Silesian Dance Theatre, and the phenomenon of theatre on the Polish stage.

Opis:
At the end of the nineteenth century and during the first half of the twentieth, lead dancers from different countries became famous and toured internationally. These dancers—and the companies they created—transformed various dance forms into performances fit for the larger world of art music, ballet, and opera circuits. They adapted ballet to the variety-show formats and its audiences. Drawing on shared philosophical ideas—such as those manifest in the works of the Transcendentalists or in the writings of Nietzsche and Wagner—and from movement techniques, such as ballet codes, the Delsarte method, and, later on, Eurythmics (in fashion at the time), these lead dancers created new dance formats, choreographies, and styles, from which many of today’s classical, folk, and ballet schools emerged. In this essay, I look at how Rabindranath Tagore, Isadora Duncan, Anna Pavlova, Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, Uday Shankar, Leila Roy Sokhey and Rumini Devi Arundale contributed to this translocal dance scene. Indian dance and spirituality, as well as famous Indian dancers, were an integral part of what at the time was known as the international modern dance scene. This transnational scene eventually coalesced into several separate schools, including what today is known as classical and modern Indian dance styles.
