Opis:: The aim of this paper is to identify and analyse the sources and causes of the armed conflict in Ukraine from a polemological perspective, i.e. referring to deep structural factors, economic tendencies and phenomena, as well as occasional causes. The complexity of the Ukrainian armed conflict results largely from the character of the sources and causes, and from the fact that they are deeply-rooted and go way beyond the problem of stopping the process of Ukraine’s initial integration with the EU by former President Viktor Yanukovych. From a polemological perspective, the escalation of the conflict was caused by a complex combination of structural and economic causes. With regard to the postponement of the signing of the association agreement with the EU, it should rather be regarded as a pretext (an occasional cause) of starting the protests, whose escalation led to the establishment of the socalled separatist republics and the outbreak of the armed conflict. The paper attempts to sort out and conduct a broad analysis of the causes of the abovementioned events.

The article explores the nature of stereotypes surrounding Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions, framing them as colonial legacy later instrumentalized by the Ukrainian political, cultural, and intellectual elite. In addition, it highlights the historical context, enrooted in Soviet propaganda, which shaped the region’s negative and distorted image. The author argues that the prevailing image of Donbas as the Ukrainian Other has led to the marginalization of its population, contributing to the discrimination faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs) since 2014. The article calls for a shift in discourse, deviating from discussing separate “cultural identity” and focusing on the local and communal aspects of the region. It also advocates a nuanced and empathetic exchange about East Ukraine, acknowledging the impact of historical and structural factors on the region’s challenges.

Opis:: The problem of the Ukrainian language in light of the annexation of Crimea and the war in DonbasThe problem of Ukrainian language in public discourse has been present since 1991, when Ukraine regained its independence. The problem is difficult, largely due to the historical past, mainly Soviet. For 26 years of independence Ukraine has not developed a unified and correct approach to solve this problem. In this article was an attempt to analyze how the annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas influenced the language problem in Ukraine. The analysis covers four main aspects: everyday life (interpersonal communication), commercial (press market, books and electronic media, advertising), formal and official (functioning of the state, judiciary and education system) and symbolic (identity). Problem języka ukraińskiego na Ukrainie na tle aneksji Krymu i wojny w DonbasieProblem języka ukraińskiego w dyskursie publicznym obecny jest od czasu odzyskania niepodległości przez Ukrainę. Problem jest trudny i złożony, co w znacznym stopniu jest spowodowane przeszłością historyczną, głównie radziecką. Przez 26 lat niepodległości Ukraina nie wypracowała jednolitego i właściwego podejścia do rozwiązania tego problemu. Kwestia językowa jest poważnym wyzwaniem dla państwa ukraińskiego i jednym z ważniejszych problemów ukraińskiej polityki wewnętrznej. Ma ona cztery podstawowe aspekty: codzienny (komunikacja międzyludzka), komercyjny (rynek prasy, książek i mediów elektronicznych, a także reklam), formalno-urzędowy (funkcjonowanie państwa, zwłaszcza sądownictwa i systemu edukacji) oraz symboliczny/tożsamościowy. W artykule podjęto próbę analizy, w jaki sposób aneksja Krymu i wojna w Donbasie wpłynęły na kwestię językową na Ukrainie.

The paper is an attempt at assessing whether and to what extent the joint ‘agenda of trust and security’ proposed to Moscow by the President of France has influenced the policy of ‘de-escalation’ of the conflict and the reduction of Russia’s neo-imperial ambitions. What were the effects of the dialogue within the so-called Normandy Format and to what extent did it influence the implementation of the Minsk agreements? The author presents the conclusion that from the very beginning, the goal for Russia has not been so much to settle the conflict in the Donbas and restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but to permanently block Kiev’s aspirations for EU accession and to keep Ukraine within Russia’s sphere of influence. The references of thepaper include official documents, statements from the main decision-making centres (the Élysée Palace, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France), recognised foreign policy journals (“Politique étrangère”), as well as analyses and studies (French Institute of International Relations, IFRI).

Opis:: This article attempts to analyse the situation in Ukraine in the face of ongoing Russian aggression and increasing pressure from the Kremlin towards Eastern European states. The armed conflict taking place in Ukraine means that the geostrategic situation of Eastern Europe has changed. In this context, the Eastern Partnership, which was meant to be one of the key instruments shaping international relations with the states neighbouring the EU in the East, is quite often seen as an ineffective or even obsolete tool. There can be no doubt that the greatest problem for the Eastern Partnership is that the project is seen in geopolitical categories - thinking of the countries of the Eastern Partnership in the context of the necessity for them to choose between the European Union and Russia (listening to statements by the EU's political decision-makers, it can often seem that those states have no other option). The key research question is whether we will be dealing with an assertive EU policy in tandem with current US policy, or whether there will be another reset in relations between the West and the Russian Federation.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to analyse Beijing’s actions in the course of the conflict in the Eastern Ukraine in the period from the proclamation of two separatist republics (the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic) until reaching the cease& re agreement at Minsk in February 2015. This conflict is likely to be the worst security crisis in Europe since the war in Yugoslavia. The fundamental question now is: „is it possible to defuse this crisis without the participation of China?”. The PRC has been a close ally and partner of both Russia and the Ukraine, which poses a tough challenge for Chinese politicians and also put their readiness to get involved in the world’s politics to the test. The conflict in the Ukraine is quite recent and is still evolving and thus still requires a lot of studies. In Poland the & rst publications on this issue have only appeared recently. Economic and political relations between China and Russia are commonly known, but the knowledge of the importance of the Ukraine in China’s politics is still li mi ted, even among the Ukrainian scholars (despite the fact that it is supposed to be the destination of one of the Silk Route branches that travelling through Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and the Black Sea is to reach the Illichivsk harbour in the Ukraine). This essay, which is a continuation of previous researches on the relations between China, the Ukraine and Russia during the course of the Maidan protest and the subsequent annexation of the Crimea by the Russian Federation, intends to & ll this gap providing an analysis of the Chinese politics towards the war in the Eastern Ukraine.

Opis:: The article concerns opinions on Poles evacuated from Donbass in 2015. To bring the above matter closer, press articles available online have been reviewed, and Internet users’ comments posted under them analyzed. Some of them strongly opposed the admission of refugees from eastern Ukraine and accepting them to their local communities. Defining them as refugees, they refused to help them, for example in providing housing while the indigenous people have to wait for years for the allocation of a communal flat. They also questioned the Polish nationality of the arrivals. Other comments were of quite the opposite nature. They expressed their conviction that the Polish state has obligations to Poles from the East and it should receive them, rather than migrants from other cultural backgrounds.
