Opis:: The temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, although a unique and innovative monument, is firmly settled in the earlier tradition. Its architecture, relief decoration, statuary program and texts, bear direct or indirect references to the past. The Old and Middle Kingdom ideas, patterns and motifs may be traced on various levels, in the overall structure as well as in details. Sometimes the direct source of a feature may be pointed out; in most cases one can at least set forth an inspiration source in the architecture and decoration programme of the royal mortuary complexes, royal texts or iconography. The Deir el-Bahari case should be seen against the wider background of Hatshepsut’s activities, referring to the great periods and achievements of her illustrious ancestors: Memphite and Theban traditions joined thus in a masterly way formed a new, firm base for her rule.

Opis:: The so-called area 13c is located in the town centre of modern Aswan (ancient Syene) in Upper Egypt and was excavated in 2005. During this excavation not only a housing chronology from the late Ptolemaic period up to the late Roman period was documented; among others an ensemble of three brooches, a hinged buckle and a pendant probably from a horse harness were found. In fact, these bronze findings are the first objects of this kind found in Aswan, which can be dated to the Early Roman period. Numerous parallels and similar types of artifacts were found in military camps of the Augustan time in other Roman provinces. We know, for example, that in the military camp in Dangstetten, brooches of Aucissa type, that can be compared to the findings from Syene, were found. What more is, these were probably even made in the same workshop. Other samples of the hinged buckle and the pendant are also known from Dangstetten, but were found in Windisch and Kaiseraugst, too. Although there is only this small amount of early Roman findings at Syene/Aswan, they are deemed to a hint for the early Roman presence in this part of the ancient city of Syene, already mentioned by Strabon.

Opis:: The joint Polish-Egyptian archaeological mission (Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology in Cairo) working in Saqqara, west of the funerary complex of Netjerykhet discovered an Early Old Kingdom quarries system. The pottery presented in this article is the first such large assemblage dated to the Early Dynastic and early Old Kingdom periods (Third to Fourth Dynasty) found in the area investigated by the mission. Importantly, it provides valuable evidence of events which had occurred before the emergence of the Lower Necropolis in the late Old Kingdom.

Opis:: The article presents the everyday life of cenobite monk starting from attempting to describe the ancient monastery itself, by showing the buildings in it, such as living quarters called “houses”. In monastery there were also everyday usable rooms like “the place of praying” where monks were praying and weaving baskets or “the chamber of sick”. Pachomius thought also about economic buildings such as workshops, store-rooms and many kinds of storehouses. Next part of the article is concerned about all functions, which monks could take charge of. First of all there was the superior of the monastery who had almost absolute authority, than his “second”, who was his substitute. Also each house separately had his superior and his “second”. In Pachomius’ monastery we can find a minister, who was taking care of things connected with work and a very important gate keeper and also workers like: gardeners, cooks bakers and raftsmen. In the final part article shows how does the prayers, which were very important in the monastery, look like and when they took place. We can get known with the work, almost as important as the prayers, which happened in the monastery and outside at the fields. Monks had also free time consisted of sleeping and the meals. Pachomius was a soldier so he put in his “Rule” much precepts about discipline and obedience to superiors, which checked up very good for his monks and later monastic life.

Opis:: A bauxite ore from Um Bogma, Southwestern Sinai, Egypt was mineralogically characterized. It contains 70% gibbsite, 13.2% quartz and 11.0% kaolinite. Beneficiation of the ore reduced the quartz content to 2.4%. Hydrometallurgical processing of the beneficiated gibbsitic bauxite was performed by hot leaching with sodium carbonate and lime in an attritor. Aluminium was converted to soluble sodium aluminate low in SiO2 (<0.1%) and the recovery was over 95% for a short leaching duration of 30 minutes at 90 °C. The residue was essentially composed of calcium silicate.

Opis:: The article aims at analyzing the biblical material about prophets. The undertaken considerations arrive to the conclusion that the prophets were realist strongly based upon earthly experiences while believing in God. They were not interested in favors of powerful rulers, nor did flatter ordinary people whose wants were to be always praised and admired. All they proclaimed resulted both from the analyses of the past, and the profound insight in the actual situation. Their conclusive sentence could be only one: Egypt is a delusive ally of Israel.
