Opis:
This article presents the results of a research examining the validity of single-item, self-reported measure of students’ subjective learning engagement. The study took place in April 2019 on a sample of 148 female second year early education students from the University of Gdańsk. Indicators of different aspects of learning engagement were used as predictors of the answer to the question: “How engaged in learning are you?” with a 9-point Likert type response format ranging from 1 - Very weakly to 9 - Very strongly. The regression model including several independent indicators of engagement explained 52% of the variance of the single-item measure. The gathered data support validity of the single-item measure of learning engagement. The results are congruent with previous research on validity and reliability of the scale.

Opis:
Crowdsourcing is seen as a way to acquire knowledge, ideas, and solutions to problems. Literature postulates that it can also be a way to increase employee engagement. However, these findings remain in the sphere of purely theoretical considerations. This article aims at seeking the interdependence between crowdsourcing and employee engagement in public organisations. The subject of the study is to indicate the possibilities of using crowdsourcing to increase employee engagement in municipal offices which use crowdsourcing. Understanding these relationships, public organisations are better able to use the crowdsourcing potential. The data were collected using a survey questionnaire conducted among all 22 identified city offices which make use of crowdsourcing, with an effective sample of 18 municipal offices. A correlation analysis was carried out using a two‐dimensional approach. The research results show that crowdsourcing is positively and moderately related to employee engagement.

Employee engagement level is the measure of the effectiveness of human capital management. Its average value in Polish practice is evidence of the high quality of HR practices. However, its differentiation provides evidence of a polarization of standards in this area. It is also proof of significant reserves in the area of employee organizational engagement. The results of an analysis of factors that determine its level show areas that require intensification of activities on the part of managers and human capital management specialists.

Opis:
Objective. The main purpose of the paper was to present the construct of engagement in actions beyond basic professional duties (shortly: beyond-duties engagement) and its measurement with the modified version of the UWES-9 questionnaire. An additional goal was to find differences in this type of employee engagement depending on personal variables, and the relationship between it and feedback from others, organizational commitment and burnout. Methods. A preliminary study was conducted within 61 employees (77% of men) of a mediumsized company in the automatics robotics industry. In the main study 137 employees (60% of women) of private and state-owned enterprises of various industries with minimum 2 years work experience in one company took part. In the second study the Feedback scale from the Work Design Questionnaire, Organizational Commitment Scale, and Oldenburg Burnout Inventory were used. Results. It was found that the modified UWES-9 questionnaire to measure beyond-duties engagement is a one-factor, reliable and theoretically valid measure. The higher level of engagement in actions in leadership positions was established, as well as its positive relationship with feedback from others and organizational commitment, and negative relationship with burnout. Conclusions. Engagement in actions beyond basic professional duties is a homogenous construct, linked to positive aspects of work. Every employee may engage in additional activities, although working as a manager may be conducive to greater beyond-duties engagement. Limitations. There was rather small, inhomogeneous group in the main study, in both studies only self-description methods were used.

Opis:
This study takes a dynamic approach to investigating engagement, examining fluctuations in cognitive-affective variables at regular time intervals during online collaborative second language (L2) writing tasks. Using online conference software and online editing software, 16 university students who use English as an L2, completed two collaborative problem-solution L2 writing tasks in two communication modes: video-chat and text-chat. After each task, learners viewed videos of their performances in 12 three-minute segments and were asked to rate their engagement on two scales (interest, focus). They were then interviewed about their attributions for fluctuations in their ratings. Group-level analysis revealed that learners experienced significantly higher focus and interest during tasks performed in video-chat mode than text-chat mode. This was contrasted with an analysis from a dynamic perspective, which produced a more nuanced picture of individual engagement trajectories during the tasks. Dynamic patterns of engagement fell into either moderately steady, increasing, decreasing, or rollercoaster pattern categories. A content analysis of 32 interviews revealed four factors that accounted for changes in engagement during tasks: task design (e.g., task familiarity), task process (e.g., instances of collaboration), task condition (e.g., communication mode), and learner factors (e.g., perceptions of proficiency).

Opis:
In the process of the effective management of business enterprises and educational institutions, in addition to other factors affecting their success, the involvement of leaders and employees proves to be the critical issue. Enterprises incur a considerable expenditure of time and work on managing and increasing the commitment of their employees, as opposed to the education sector. Effective school management and teacher involvement have a considerable impact on the quality of teachers’ work, and this affects the level of education and upbringing of students. The authors of the study describe the involvement of the work of teachers in four contexts: their professional development, professional advancement system, burnout processes, and the assessment of the effectiveness of their work based their students’ learning. Cooperation within the international Engagement & Beyond project, aiming at developing a practical tool for school management, facilitates the process of understanding the main mechanisms of teacher engagement. The system will automatically adjust the tools for measuring and raising the level of teacher involvement, taking the form both of detailed surveys developed by psychologists and human resource specialists, and materials prepared at the diagnosed motivation level of each participant. School management will be able then to diagnose the level of involvement of employees and create an action plan appropriate to needs at both personal and organisational levels.

Opis:
The Job Demands-Resources Theory (JD-R) is a heuristic theory that explains the work engagement and exhaustion by job resources and job demands interaction. The purpose of this article is to use the JD-R as a theoretical framework of work engagement management concept. In the first part of the article the concept of work engagement is presented. The second section explains the theoretical assumption of JD-R. In the third part, the concept of work engagement management is introduced. Work engagement management concept integrates planning, measurement and active modification of job resources and demands, which should lead to the development of work engagement among employees. The conclusion sets out the possible consequences of theoretical and practical application of the proposed concept and points up its limitations.

Opis:
Teaching, community involvement, and conducting research are the three functions of higher education institutions (HEIs). This exploration aims to develop constructs of instructors’ engagement or non-engagement in research as basis for developing a training framework. This study employed exploratory factor analysis. Eighty-four (84) instructors answered the questionnaires. The findings revealed four (4) factors of instructors’ research engagement: administrative support, recognition and promotion, motivation, and institutional requirement. It further showed instructors’ non-engagement in research could be due to four (4) factors such as time constraints, lack of experience and training, financial limitation, and lack of motivation. The scales have copious sampling adequacy and a high level of reliability. The instruments can be useful in assessing the level of instructors’ engagement and non-engagement in research.

Opis:
Interest in the examination stress among children and university students, often referred to as test anxiety, has been constantly growing since 1950s. This phenomenon has quickly become subject of many theories, which spawned various tools to measure it. Moreover, research on examination stress is often conducted on large samples with multiple measurements in different time periods and multiplicity of other traits measured at the same time. Hence, valid, reliable, and short tools, which would significantly reduce time needed to fulfil questionnaire and fatigue of participants, are especially desired. The aim of the present study was to provide support for the validity of the single-item, self-report measure of examination stress. The study was conducted among 235 students from University of Gdańsk, 197 females (83.8%), 35 men (14.9%) and three persons who did not state gender (1.3%). Participants were from different faculties, courses of study, years and modes of study. Mean age was 20.46 years (SD = 1.37). The obtained data provided initial support for the construct validity of the measure. Existing studies indicate that the application of single-item scale can be a promising alternative for a multi-item and multidimensional scales in situations, where quick and easy measurement of examination stress is needed.
