Opis:
The study investigates the attitudes of 254 Czech students towards English as the main language taught at secondary schools. The questionnaire enquired about their perspectives on learning English in general, British and American cultures and accents of English. Such preferences may have implications for pronunciation model selection in TEFL. In addition, the participants evaluated 12 words pronounced in British or American English for pleasantness, and also assigned them to one of the varieties. Despite the predominance of American culture and despite equal distribution of cultural preferences and equal aesthetic evaluation of the accents, the British variety was marked as more prestigious and was also identified more successfully. Interestingly, the findings differed between students from the capital city and those from regional schools.

This article is a review of a Gedenkschrift intended to memorise Jacek Fisiak, a well-known Polish professor of English who died in 2019. It presents an overview of the contributions to this volume, which is divided into six “Parts,” each of which focuses on a particular aspect connected to his person or academic work. The articles in this book cover a large number of fields, ranging from individual recollections through topics on historical English up to the modern day. It is concluded that this publication is a suitable way to posthumously honour a particularly productive and beloved scholar.

Estuary English as an accent of young women in the UK
Estuary English jako akcent młodych kobiet w Wielkiej Brytanii

The topic of my MA Thesis is Estuary English as an accent of young women in Britain. The first chapter of this work focuses on the description of the history of dialectology, differences between terms such as accent and dialect as well as on the characteristics of three varieties of English: RP, Cockney and Estuary English. Some studies on linguistic attitudes towards them are presented in the second part. Socio-linguistic correlates influencing the choice of a particular variety are also analysed here, such as: social status, group membership, ethnicity, gender and age, with the mention of some research in those areas. The third chapter focuses on the research part. The study conducted for this work aims at proving that Estuary English is an accent used mostly by young female speakers in the UK and there exist some gender differences as for the use of the features of this accent. Therefore, the recordings from programme Come Dine with Me as well as from YouTube channels of British vloggers are analysed. To compare the speech of different speakers, frequencies of features of Estuary English per minute as well as the percentage of each feature are measured. Other accents as well as other factors which played some role in this sample are also discussed.
Tematem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest akcent Estuary English jako odmiana używana głównie przez młode kobiety w Wielkiej Brytanii. Praca zawiera opis historii rozwoju dialektologii, analizę różnic pomiędzy terminami takimi jak akcent i dialekt, jak również charakterystykę trzech odmian: RP, Cockney oraz Estuary English. Omówione zostały również badania nad postawami językowymi wobec nich. Praca analizuje czynniki społeczno-językowe, które wpływają na wybór akcentu przez daną osobę, takie jak: status społeczny, przynależność grupowa, grupa etniczna, płeć oraz wiek. Przedstawiono również najważniejsze badania w tych obszarach. Analiza badawcza przeprowadzona na potrzeby tej pracy ma na celu udowodnienie, iż Estuary English jest akcentem używanym głownie przez młode kobiety w Wielkiej Brytanii oraz, iż istnieją pewne różnice ze względu na płeć, jeśli chodzi o użycie tej odmiany. Materiał pochodzi z odcinków programu Come Dine with Me, jak również z nagrań brytyjskich vlogerów na ich kanałach na YouTube. W celu porównania mowy poszczególnych uczestników, zmierzona została częstotliwość występowania poszczególnych cech tego akcentu, jak i procentowy udział danej cechy w całości próbki pochodzącej od jednej osoby. Praca zawiera również krótką analizę innych akcentów obecnych w zgromadzonym materiale oraz czynników, odgrywających role w tym badaniu.

What are the implications for the unassailable position of the English language in social, professional and academic contexts in the world today? In this paper we briefly outline some of the watershed changes in the way we have viewed the teaching/learning of English and how we have evolved our notions as to what kind of English needs to be taught/learned. We argue that we are again at a watershed moment and intend to briefly analyse this and ask where we should be heading in the future.

The purpose of this study is to compare the use of traditional English flash cards and the vocabulary learning method of Augmented Reality to see which English vocabulary learning method is more efficient for elementary school students. The study was conducted at an elementary school in Taiwan, and there were 60 student participants in total. This study adopted an unequal pre-test and post-test experimental design. The study was conducted in two stages in terms of data collection. In the first stage, the control and experimental group took the English vocabulary test, without any teacher instruction, as the pretest. In the second stage, the control group used flashcards to learn 20 target English words by themselves for 40 minutes. The experimental group adopted the Augmented Reality 3D effect on the 20 target words by themselves for 40 minutes. After that, both groups took the same English vocabulary test again, as the posttest. On the whole, Augmented Reality teaching effects apparently exceed the effects of the traditional vocabulary learning method. The results of this study show that the learning method of Augmented Reality was more efficient than that of learning with English flash cards among the various proficiency levels (high, intermediate, and low) in terms of English vocabulary learning. The way of using English flash cards showed significant differences between high and low level groups, as well as between intermediate and low level groups, with the exception being the difference between high and intermediate level groups. It is worthwhile improving children’s English vocabulary learning by using Augmented Reality, by incorporating it into their daily lives through mobile learning.

How English has been shaped. The history of English from Old English to Early Modern English .

This thesis is devoted to describe the shaping of English from the 5th c. to the 17th c., i.e. from Old English through Middle English to Early Modern English, on the account of its external and internal history. The external history of English concerns the following aspects: political, economic, social, cultural and spiritual. The most crucial of them that are discussed in the thesis are the Saxon invasion, the Viking invasion, Christianization, the Norman conquest, the Tudors, the Stuarts, the explolration of a New World. In turn, the internal history of English encompasses grammar, phonology, writing and vocabulary; the most vital facets analized in the thesis from this field are Grimm's law, Verner's law, I-mutation and the Great Vowel Shift.
Zasadniczą intencją niniejszej pracy dyplomowej jest ukazanie rozwoju języka angielskiego od V do XVI wieku, tj. od okresu staroagielskiego przez średnioangielski do wczesno-nowo-angielskiego, na podstawie nakreślenia jego historii zewnętrznej oraz wewnętrznej. Historia zewnętrzna motywowana jest aspektami polityczno-gospodarczymi, społecznymi, kulturowymi oraz religijnymi. Najistotniejsze z nich, które zostały poruszone w pracy to najazd plemion germańskich, inwazja wikingów,chrystianizacja, rządy Normanów, dynastia Tudorów, klan Stuartów i eksploracja Ameryki Północnej. Z kolei historia wewnętrzna koncentruje się na aspektach gramatycznych, fonologicznych, piśmie oraz słownictwie, z czego kluczowym było omówienie prawa Vernera, prawa Grimma, I-mutation, a także Wielkiej przesuwki samogłoskowej.

The present exploratory study investigated adolescent experiences (N = 84) at a multilingual London college to provide evidence of the psychological factors underlying language-driven effort. It was assessed in a group of students with either English as First Language (EFL) or English as an Additional Language (EAL) status, speaking English to varying degrees, concerning their personal characteristics and environment. The impact of language status and category on such an effort was explored in volunteers of all year groups, using a new theory- and practice-based Language-driven Effort Questionnaire. Differences in language-driven effort among groups with diverse language statuses occurred. EAL students put in more effort, perceiving their environment as motivating and supportive, which was reciprocal, regardless of proficiency. Also, the language category was important for early EAL learners who struggled and were sometimes lonely. The results showed that the sources of language-driven efforts in multilingual settings are both personal and environmental. The need to analyse the individual situation and use flexible methods in the classroom were signalled for the benefit of all pupils who differ in language attributes.
