Opis:: Przedmiotem pracy jest analiza poglądów Ericha Fromma dotyczących właściwego funkcjonowania społeczeństwa. Przedstawia ona fragment jego wieloletniej twórczości z dziedziny badań nad zachowaniem poszczególnych jednostek oraz ich relacji w stosunku do całości społeczeństwa. Podstawowym zagadnieniem jest odpowiedź na pytanie: czy jest możliwe stworzenie dobrego społeczeństwa według wytycznych jakie przedstawia Fromm. Niezbędnym elementem jest analiza biografii niemieckiego myśliciela oraz tła historycznego, z których wynika wiele wniosków dotyczących jego późniejszych poglądów. Na podstawie długich lat pracy z ludźmi Fromm pisze szereg książek dotyczących relacji międzyludzkich, które przekładają się na relację w społeczeństwie. W tej pracy pragnę wykazać, iż Fromm nie tworzy utopii w tradycyjnym znaczeniu, tworzy on wizję drogi do niego, która jednak u swego celu nie jest nieosiągalnym ideałem, tylko rzeczywistym światem ludzi zadowolonych z siebie. W zakończeniu zawarta jest krótka analiza wpływu jego twórczości na świat od czasu ukazania się „Zdrowego społeczeństwa” w 1955 roku.
The subject of the work is to analyze the views of Erich Fromm for the proper functioning of the society. It shows a fragment of his many years of work in the field of research on the behavior of individual units and their relationship to society as a whole. The basic thing is to answer the question: Is it possible to create a good society according to the guidelines which provides Fromm. An essential component is the analysis of the German thinker's biography and historical background which shows a lot of requests for his later views. Based on long years of working with people Fromm wrote several books on relationships that translate into a relationship in society. In my thesis I show that Fromm does not create a utopia in the traditional sense, he creates a vision of the way to it, however, in that its goal is not unattainable ideal, but the real world of people satisfied with myself. The conclusion contains a short analysis of the impact of his work to the world since the publication of a "Healthy Society" in 1955.

Opis:: Present Master’s thesis applies to writings of Erich Fromm – one of the most seminal intellectual of the 20th century. The thesis puts forward problems, which the author found most interesting from the perspective of political science. Individual parts of this writing describe problems of human nature, theory of temper, as well as aggression and destruction of individuals. Fromm’s conception of a healthy society and a “new” man living within it , criticism of a 20th century’s capitalism and Communism as systems preventing individuals from developing their own egos have been widely describe.Problem of escaping freedom mechanism, and also a way of implementation it in a democracy has been described separately. This work presents Erich Fromm as a socially and politically concerned thinker, full of anthropological optimism which opposes all forms of subordination of a human being.
Praca magisterska dotyczy twórczości Ericha Fromma, jednego z najbardziej wpływowych intelektualistów XX wieku. Praca przedstawia problemy, które zostały uznane przez autora za najciekawsze z perspektywy studiów politologicznych. Poszczególne części pracy poświęcone zostały zagadnieniom natury ludzkiej, teorii charakteru, jak również problematyce agresji i destrukcyjności jednostek. Obszernie omówiono Frommowską koncepcję zdrowego społeczeństwa i żyjącego w nim „nowego“ człowieka, poprzedzoną krytyką kapitalizmu drugiej połowy XX wieku oraz komunizmu, jako systemów, które uniemożliwiają jednostkom dokonywać rozwoju własnego „ja“. Osobno przedstawiono także problem mechanizmów ucieczki od wolności, a także sposobów jej realizowania w demokracji. Praca ukazuje Ericha Fromma jako myśliciela zaangażowanego społecznie i politycznie, pełnego antropologicznego optymizmu, który sprzeciwia się wszelkim formom podporządkowywania człowieka.

Opis:: The postmodern university is experiencing a legitimation crisis because of a deepening and corrosive mistrust of all forms of authority; even those that are intended to benefit students by enabling them to “think critically”, or to deepen and improve their knowledge and skills. Some of the problem is rooted in prevailing cultural and economic trends, but others inhere in the nature of postmodernism itself; especially the postmodern claim that truth itself is non-existent or simply unattainable or unavailable, even at the best of times. Unlike earlier generations of critical theorists, who believed that “the truth shall make you free”, postmodern theorists, following Nietzsche, claim that the very idea of truth is moot, if not entirely obsolete. But absent a commitment to a search for truth, the entire structure of the university itself begins to crumble.

Opis:: Freedom, responsibility and safety are categories which penetrate each other. However, in the specialist literature they are more often examined separatlely. Freedom and security are fundamental values, which are followed by specific needs and aspirations of individuals and groups. They should be treated as specific desiderata of human existence. Complementarity of the analized concepts is indisputable, however, responsibility and safety are “secondary” to freedom. On the threshold of the era of hyper globalization only drawing the line clearly – which I will try to propose – at individual freedom and public safety gives a chance to ensure multidimensional welfare of societies. Fromm is of the opinion that contemporary humans marginalize themselves in relation to nature or in confrontation with their surroundings. Human beings have bacame reified and their potential has been changed into resources, which should be treated as assets and aimed at gaining the highest profits. International relations are brought to the role of alienated beings, and each one of them reaches the feeling of safety only by integrating with the community. As I have proven, maintaining social ties guarantees the sense of safety and, thereby gives the possibil- ity to use one’s potencial freely.

Tytuł:: The image of Buddhism in the works of Erich Fromm
Wizerunek buddyzmu w twórczości Ericha Fromma

Opis:: The subject of the work concerns the reception of Buddhism in the Western culture. In my analysis I focused on the views on Buddhism which are presented by the XX century psychologist, philosopher and psychoanalyst - Erich Fromm. In my work, I introduced the way in which Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki, one of the most important popularizers of Buddhism in the West, presented its thought, what was the worldview and aspirations of Erich Fromm, and finally, what image of Buddhism he presented in his literary work. The purpose of this analysis was to examine what image of Buddhism has become established in Western consciousness, what are the expectations for this Eastern system, which aspects were considered the most attractive and were the most exposed, and which were rejected at the same time. The main subject of my work focuses around the category of Orientalism, however, the topic is also important in studying the history of the transfer of Buddhist thought to the West
Tematyka pracy podejmuje kwestię recepcji buddyzmu w zachodnim kręgu kulturowym. W swojej analizie skoncentrowałam się szczegółowo na tym, jaki pogląd na buddyzm przedstawia XX wieczny psycholog, filozof i psychoanalityk- Erich Fromm. W pracy przybliżyłam kolejno sposób, w jaki prezentował myśl buddyjską Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki, jeden z najważniejszych jej popularyzatorów na Zachodzie, jaki był światopogląd i dążenia Ericha Fromma, oraz wreszcie, jaki wizerunek buddyzmu w swojej twórczości przedstawił. Celem tej analizy było zbadanie, jaki obraz buddyzmu utrwalił się w świadomości zachodniej, jakie stawiano wobec tego wschodniego systemu oczekiwania, które jego elementy uważano za najbardziej atrakcyjne i były najbardziej eksponowane, które zaś odrzucano. W mojej pracy ważna jest kategoria orientalizmu, problematyka koncentruje się właśnie wokół tego zjawiska, jednakże temat jest istotny również z punktu widzenia badań nad historią tzw. ,,trzeciej linii przekazu” myśli buddyjskiej.

Opis:: The work is a critical analysis of writings of theoreticians dealing with alienation theory from the late eighteenth to the twentieth century. While in Karl Marx’s theory the focus is on alienation of a man from the product of his work and work itself, other forms of the concept play an important role in fields like history, sociology, philosophy and psychology. Before Marx, the idea appeared in the writings of Rousseau, where it was understood as a result of human distance from nature. Hegel interpreted it as a sort of alienated reality that only man can assimilate. Feuerbach, on the other hand, believed that man alienates from a part of himself by creating the idea of God. Fromm and the Frankfurt School drew from Marx’s writings, but for them the alienation was more about the mental sphere and it meant the alienation of the man from himself.

Opis:: W swojej analizie filmów Ethana i Joela Coenów Syska wykorzystuje narzędzia psychoanalizy Ericha Fromma, by pokazać nekrofilską naturę bohaterów ich filmów. Przemoc, jeden z najistotniejszych elementów filmowej rzeczywistości, jest przedmiotem analizy autora. Syska wskazuje na nowe sposoby obrazowania przemocy, podkreślając fizjologiczny charakter aktów przemocy i biologiczną naturę umierania. Sakralna i metafizyczna wartość śmierci zostaje umniejszona, a na pierwszy plan wysuwają się jej fizjologiczne aspekty. Syska stara się udowodnić, że hiperbolizacja przemocy w filmach braci Coen jest nie tylko punktem wyjścia dla postmodernistycznych zabaw z doświadczonym widzem, ale także próbą wciągnięcia go w patologiczny dyskurs, którego istotą jest estetyczna i moralna akceptacja okrucieństwa. Syska udowadnia, że nekrofilia, będąca jedną z najistotniejszych właściwości składających się na ich filmową rzeczywistość, jest również cechą charakterystyczną postmodernizmu.
In his analysis of Ethan and Joel Coen’s films Syska makes use of the tools of Erich Fromm’s psychoanalysis to show the necrophyliac nature of their films’ heroes. Violence, one of the most essential components of film reality, is analysed by the author. Syska points out the new ways of depicting violence by stressing the physiological nature of acts of violence and biological nature of dying. The sacred and metaphysical value of death is belittled while prominence is given to its physiological aspects. Syska tries to prove that the hiperbolisation of violence in Coen brothers’ films is the starting point not only for post-modernist plays with experienced spectators but also the attempt to involve them in a pathological discourse whose essence is aesthetic and moral acceptance of cruelty. Syska proves that necrophyliac nature, which is one of the most essential properties making up their film reality, is also a characteristic feature of post-modernism.
