Opis:: The article bases on ethnographical field research made in intercultural environment of little Slovakian spa. The author choses a place where different social groups co-exist: spa clients, spa employees and residents of the spa village. The general question is how the local quality of this environment is perceived and what are the contents of this exact idea of local quality, but the text mostly reveals a few aspects of the field research experience, the role of anthropologist, problems with finding informants and possible ways of fitting into the rythm of live in the spa resort.

Opis:: The article presents the state of dialectological documentation for the area of today’s Gniezno County. The author statistically summarized Adam Tomaszewski’s pre-war materials, providing the number of index cards, and listed the research points and hours of recordings for the Atlas of the language and folk culture of Wielkopolska. Then the author cited statistics for contemporary materials, interpreted as field explorations after 2000, deposited in the audio library of the Dialectology Laboratory of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Explorations related to the development of dictionaries as part of the Wielkopolska Regional Dictionary series have been distinguished, which extend the source database many times in relation to its existing content. This situation proves the need to conduct field research, e.g. using the educational project method.

Opis:: The article is a theoretical contribution that deals with problems of field researcher. Shows difficulties related to researcher's morality, their role as a witness and an observer, describes etic and emic research. The authors begin their deliberations with an in-depth description of the essence of the relationship created between the arrived researcher and rooted in the given research community. They review anthropological research, pointing to valuable discoveries of field researchers, and do not bypass the description of difficult situations related to the experience of social relations that can not be experienced or described adequately from the privacy of an office.

Opis:: This text is a record of part of a research trip to Kazakhstan, which took place in September and October 2024. The article contains elements of reportage, more or less elaborated material from field research in the form of interviews and observations, autoethnography and reflections on conducting field research, as well as account of the state of the Polish diaspora in this Central Asian country. I intentionally do not include here any excerpts from the statements of the Kazakh Poles who were informants for me. Instead, one can find utterances of other people I met.
Niniejszy tekst stanowi zapis fragmentu podróży badawczej do Kazachstanu, która odbyła się we wrześniu i październiku 2024 roku. Artykuł zawiera elementy reportażu, mniej lub bardziej rozbudowany materiał z badań terenowych w formie wywiadów i obserwacji, autoetnografię i refleksje z prowadzenia badań terenowych, a także relację z sytuacji polskiej diaspory w tym kraju Azji Środkowej. Celowo nie zamieszczam tu fragmentów wypowiedzi kazachskich Polaków, którzy byli dla mnie informatorami. Zamiast nich można znaleźć wypowiedzi innych osób, z którymi się spotkałem.

Opis:: This volume is dedicated to the International PhD Program “Searching for Identity: Global Challenges, Local Traditions,” organized at the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” of the University of Warsaw, in 2013–2018. The volume aims at showing identity as a processual concept, using the example of the researcher as a living personality. It thus corresponds with the general trend in the humanities and social sciences to pay attention to the researcher and the ways his or her personal background and experience influence the generation of knowledge. By introducing this topic, we would like to show completing a PhD, or any other research, as a dynamic process with a personal history of success and failure, as well as to demonstrate the impact of the “Searching for Identity” project.

Opis:: The text concerns the author’s project “Ethnography as a personal experience. Generational transformations in methodology and research practices”. It reveals a problematic, and partly unstable character of the strategy of constructing the identity of an anthropologist professional group. In the author’s opinion a Polish young anthropologist shows a disruption of knowledge transmission between generations as well as a discontinuity in the Polish ethnology tradition. As a result, there is a tendency in not only borrowing the theory and authority from the tradition of foreign national anthropologies, but also an uncritical transfer of discursive forms, authorizing national anthropology. In his opinion it is the most important question about contemporary shape of national anthropologies, especially Polish ethnology.

Opis:: The text is dedicated to the reflections on the author’s own ethnographic field research in the rural areas of the Republic of Macedonia, which has been carried out since 2011 to specify the strategies which local inhabitants develop to manage their everyday reality and practices. The author discusses the factors which influence an ethnographic field research and presents the reflexivity and awareness of the research process. She also focuses on researcher’s personality and individual features, on how the locals accept a stranger in their private space. The several key moments are underlined like coming to the field and its impact on the further activity through the reflection if the field which precedes next steps, gaining the confidence and respect, difficulties that the researcher faces in communication etc. All these moments (and many others) should be considered as an inevitable part of the work.

Opis:: This paper focuses on an African street experienced as profoundly contradictory. It departs from Adeline Masquelier`s observation that this landscape is an object of both fascination and terror, and a space of both fear and desire. The street offers jobs, goods and economic opportunities, but it can also lead to isolation, marginalization and fatalities. The paper is based on field research undertook in Omdurman in 2013 and granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Opis:: This article presents an ethnographic account of my day-to-day experiences as a survey researcher in men’s prisons in the United States. I outline challenges I encountered in the field and share personal reflections on interviewing people who are incarcerated. I then put forth a series of implications and suggestions for those who plan to conduct similar studies. Researchers’ firsthand accounts of the data collection process and research settings are crucial because they provide instruction for other scholars. Yet, these aspects of doing research are conventionally ignored in survey researchers’ scholarly publications. Accordingly, this article presents an examination of my work as a survey researcher through an interpretive frame, calls for reflective approaches to conducting quantitative research, and provides a primer on doing research in prison settings.
