Norbert Elias conceptualized social inequality as a result of shift in relative social forces of individuals in figurations, in which framework he also viewed the inequality between men and women. In this paper I examine the main thesis of what could be named Elias’s gender sociology: firstly, men and women use different strategies in their striving for an increase in relative power depending on their social position, and secondly, one of the most effective strategies which may be successfully used by the weaker party in order to change the distribution of power between the sexes is redefining the arsenal of cultural weapons used in this struggle. The antagonism between men and women trying to draw as much power as possible to themselves in the zero-sum social game can become very fierce, especially if the use of physical violence is legitimized on a respective level of civilization. On the other hand, according to Elias’s basic theoretical assumptions all individuals in a figuration are interrelated and interdependent, which restrains direct violence as well as suppresses radical liberation tendencies. This makes it easier for women to engage in strategies of coping with oppression on institutional, symbolic and proxemic level, which are discussed in the final part of the paper.

Figuration in Rhetoric. The Analysis of Martin Luther Kings Speeches

The aim of this master thesis is to portray the role of figurative language in rhetorical texts. On the basis on Martin Luther King’s speeches (“I Have a Dream” and “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”) I intend to prove that a text which takes advantage of certain techniques of persuasion and is replete with stylistic and rhetorical figures is more attractive and, thus, more persuasive to the audience. Firstly, I present the concept of rhetoric, its treatment over the course of history as well as the major principles of creating an exemplary rhetorical text established by ancient philosophers and orators. Modern approach to rhetoric, based on critical analysis of texts, is also outlined. Then, I focus on figuration as an indispensable and crucial aspect of rhetorical studies. I present the taxonomy of figures according to the level of linguistic description, which consists of: phonological, graphic, morphological, syntactic and semantic figures (tropes). Considerable attention is paid to the figures whose function in rhetoric is particularly significant. I also try to explicate the theory behind the classification of figures into micro-, macro- and megatropes based on their functional range in a text. After the theoretical considerations follows the practical part – the analysis of King’s most famous speeches, namely: “I Have a Dream” and “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”.It may be concluded that King’s orations depict certain techniques of persuasion (including the ancient concepts of logos, ethos and pathos) and rely on numerous figures, which, apart from adding ornamentation, substantially contribute to the speeches’ general message. Out of all the figures visible in “I Have a Dream” and “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” addresses, the most prevalent are the ones based on different patterns of repetition (mainly epanaphora) as well as tropes (with metaphor and antithesis as the most conspicuous of them). Moreover, I state clearly that the functional range of certain tropes exceeds the level of a sentence to structure sequences of sentences or even entire paragraphs, which points to the presence of macrotropes in the analysed speeches. Their thorough examination makes it possible to claim that they also contain megatropes (megametaphor and mega¬-antithesis), which can only be inferred from the text by means of one’s own interpretation.
Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest ukazanie roli języka figuratywnego w tekstach retorycznych. Na podstawie przemów Martina Luthera Kinga (“I Have a Dream” i “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”) zamierzam udowodnić, że tekst, który wykorzystuje techniki perswazji oraz jest nasycony środkami stylistycznymi i retorycznymi jest bardziej atrakcyjny i, w związku z tym, bardziej przekonywający dla słuchaczy. Na początku mojej pracy wyjaśniam pojęcie retoryka, nakreślam historię tej dziedziny, prezentuję główne zasady kreowania wzorcowego tekstu retorycznego ustanowione przez starożytnych filozofów i mówców oraz odnoszę się do współczesnego podejścia do retoryki, który bazuje na krytycznej analizie tekstów. Następnie skupiam się na figuracji, jako nieodzownym i decydującym aspekcie nauk retorycznych. Przedstawiam taksonomię figur według poziomu językowego opisu, która składa się z: figur fonologicznych, graficznych, morfologicznych, syntaktycznych oraz semantycznych (tropów). Znaczną uwagę poświęcam analizie tych figur, których funkcja w retoryce jest niezwykle ważna. Próbuję także wyjaśnić teorię, jaka kryje się za podziałem figur na mikro-, makro- i megatropy. Po rozważaniach teoretycznych następuje część praktyczna tej pracy – analiza najsłynniejszych przemów Kinga, mianowicie: “I Have a Dream” i “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”.Można dojść do wniosku, że mowy Kinga obrazują określone techniki perswazji (w sposób szczególny logos, etos i patos) oraz opierają się na licznych figurach, które, poza funkcją dekoracyjną, zasadniczo przyczyniają się do ogólnego przesłania tych przemów. Spośród wszystkich figur dostrzegalnych w oracjach “I Have a Dream” i “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” dominują tropy (z metaforą i antytezą na czele) oraz te figury, które są oparte na różnych rodzajach powtórzeń (głównie epanafora). Ponadto stwierdzam jasno, że zakres funkcjonowania niektórych tropów w tekście przekracza poziom zdania i kształtuje serię zdań lub nawet całych akapitów, co wskazuje na obecność makrotropów w rozważanych przemowach. Szczegółowa analiza tych oracji pozwala stwierdzić, że zawierają one także megatropy (megametaforę oraz mega-antytezę), które dają się jedynie wywnioskować z tekstu na drodze własnej interpretacji.

The main aim of this paper is to propose a new Polish translation one of the well-known Michel de Montaigne’s essays, De la vanité des paroles (On the Vanity of Words, I 51). For the humanist, rhetoric delimited only to elocution responsible for linguistic adornments becomes the subject for critical investigation. In a short introduction to the essay, the author takes into consideration the rhetoric of Montaigne’s discourse on ‘the vanity of words’ with a particular attention to two rhetorical forms: amplification and figuration. Raising questions about lack of temperance in amplifying and adorning words with tropes and figures, the humanist attempted to revalorize linguistic and stylistic simplicity. Therefore, to find the proper words for various things, emotions and experiences are the central concern of an essay, a new literary genre invented by Montaigne.

Opis:
Applying linguistic tropes to the deep structure which underlay the 19th century historical imagination Hayden White derived from the vault of philosophical richness contained in Giambattista Vico’s La Scienza Nuova. Now the treasure trove becomes a source of one more illuminating analogy. The following study demonstrates how metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche and irony can be identified with five major theories of truth: the correspondence, pragmatic, coherence, deflationary and the semantic one. Theories are evoked on the basis of texts by philosophers themselves (Bertrand Russell, Charles Sanders Peirce, Brand Blanshard et al.). Moreover, a numerical mismatch between them and the four tropes should be seen as everything but unwanted. The concept of irony has multiple interpretations, and so mapping it onto the semantic theory will expose the relation between truth accounts and the principle of their development. In the end, there emerges a pattern in the shape of a circle or a spiral—two models of infinity along which runs the human quest for meaning of truth.

In the newspaper articles and feuilltons, Antun Gustav Matoš uses a variety of procedures analogous to his artistic creation and develops a rich figuration and characteristic irony. The journalistic discourse constructed in that way consistently creates political and social imaginary which confirms oppositions: nationally/internationally, individual/collective, tradition/modernity and Croat/Serb, where the author clearly states his preference. Although Matoš consistently promote Starčevićʼs heritage, liberalism and individualism, he does not simply convey a political message, but adds meaning to agitation, which boosts its suggestivness, but also causes that it becomes relative.

The present article is an analysis of the configuration of the narrative focus and its implications for the construction of three novels from the "second phase" of Machado de Assis’ ouvre: Casa Velha (1885), Dom Casmurro (1899) and Memorial de Aires (1908). We seek to shed new light on the problem faced by the Brazilian thinker at the end of 19th century, when his desire to understand the collective past was frustrated by the lack of a perspective capable of giving a full image of a heterogenous and strongly verticalized society. In order to exemplify this relationship, we propose to reflect on the role of portait as an intratextual representation of the narrative focus.
Este ensaio consiste numa análise da configuração do foco narrativo e das suas consequências para a construção ficcional em três romances da chamada "segunda fase" da produção de Machado de Assis: Casa Velha (1885), Dom Casmurro (1899) e Memorial de Aires (1908). Procura-se lançar uma nova luz sobre o problema que se colocava diante do pensador brasileiro do final do século XIX, cujo desejo de interpretar o passado coletivo se achava frustrado pela falta de uma perspectiva capaz de dar conta da complexidade de uma sociedade heterogênea e fortemente verticalizada. Para exemplificar esta interligação propõe-se uma reflexão sobre o papel do retrato como uma representação intratextual da configuração do foco narrativo.

Starting from the semiotic considerations of Barthes on the rhetoric of the image and of Lotman on iconic rhetoric, and drawing further inspiration from phenomenological semiotics of Wiesing, the author proposes a transmedial search for visual master tropes in selected instances of 19th and 20th-century European sculpture. In conclusion, the author claims that the openness of semiotic studies is both internal (among distinct semiotic codes and methodological paradigms) and external, reaching out to other disciplines.

The article covers the years 1916 to 2006, i.e. from Karol Szymanowski’s Twelve Etudes Op. 33 (1916) to Krzysztof Baculewski’s Twelve Etudes (2006). During the period under examination piano etudes were written by many Polish composers. Those by Szymanowski, Witold Lutosławski, Andrzej Panufnik, Grażyna Bacewicz and Bolesław Woytowicz are considered to be most representative. In the twentieth century and at the beginning of the twenty first century, the etude has not been an anachronic genre, as evidenced by the constant flow of new works penned by composers. These include both works in which the organization of the musical material draws on tradition and those which explore the techniques of twentieth century-music. The neo-classical trend exerted a far-reaching influence on the character and stylistic features of Polish piano etudes of the first half of the twentieth century. Works by Lutosławski, Bacewicz, Woytowicz, Szeligowski, and to some extent by Panufnik can serve as examples. The etudes by Lutosławski and Bacewicz are beyond doubt of the most outstanding artistic merit. They are part of the concert repertoire and are among the most frequently performed Polish 20th-century etudes. The etudes of Norbert Mateusz Kuźnik, Andrzej Hundziak and Franciszek Woźniak employ the techniques typical of new music, such as a new type of notation, and therefore belong to the avantgarde and post-avantgarde group. Post-modernist Two Etudes by Paweł Szymański also belongs to this group. The work is a good example of ‘sur-conventionality’, a style that is characteristic of Szymański’s music. The etudes by Polish composers, particularly contemporary ones, are used all too rarely as instruction pieces in Polish music schools. They are also rarely included in recital programmes. The reasons should be looked for in the lack of adequate preparation of both the students and teachers, as well as in an insufficient knowledge and understanding of 20th-century music. All this results in a reluctance to explore this part of the Polish musical heritage.

The paper is a contribution to the subject of transmediality, that is, convergence of the verbal and non-verbal arts within the semiosphere. Specifically, the author focuses on master tropes. which - as a reflection of artistic imagination - shape literary discourse. The author claims their presence in the visual arts as well. Using some chosen examples of artworks, the author argues that the neo-classical tetrad of metaphor-metonymy-synecdoche-irony (Vico, Burke, White) is also discernible in the painted/sculpted media. She proposes the extension of Vichian set to include such figures as simile and antithesis. She also raises the issue of universality vs. culture-specificity of semiotic figuration.
