Opis:: The Holy See, with territorial residence is the Vatican City State, is the only sovereign European entity with diplomatic ties to the Republic of China (ROC), the official name for Taiwan, which presently has fifteen diplomatic allies in total. Holy See - ROC relations were established in 1942. In 1971, when the ROC lost its seat in the UN, the position of the Pontifical representative in Taiwan was downgraded from ambassador to chargé d'affaires, and it has remained so ever after. The Holy See and relations with it are unlike those with other sovereign entities, which are often influenced by geopolitical or commercial considerations. The Apostolic Palace is not interested in receiving foreign aid or signing trade agreements, but in securing religious freedom for the Catholic flock and respecting human rights. This can play in favour of Taiwan when it comes to preserving its formal relations with the Holy See. The People's Republic of China (PRC) demands that the Vatican conforms to the one-China policy by severing its diplomatic ties with Taiwan, as one of the two conditions for normalizing relations with Beijing. The 2018 Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China on the Appointment of Bishops marked a turning point in the Sino-Vatican dynamics. Yet, as long as there is no actual religious freedom for the Catholic Church in China, the Holy See remains very reluctant to switch diplomatic allegiance to the PRC. However, the 2018 agreement and the élan of the Papal policy towards China perhaps indicate that, for the Chair of St. Peter, diplomatic relations with Beijing may be 'well worth a mass'.

Opis:: The aim of the article is to analyze the discourse of Pope Francis on the issue of migrations and checking whether it changed after the so‒called ‘migration crisis’ from 2015. The period of time taken into considerations starts from 2014, i.e. one year after Jorge Bergoglio became the Pope, and ends in the current 2018. The analyzed data include annual papal proclamations delivered at ‘International Migrants Day’. Methods applied in the study are content analysis and Berelson’s method.

Opis:: The text is based on an analysis of Pope Francis’ statements on the war in Ukraine. In the first part of the text, the author analyzes Pope Francis’ understanding of war in the Encyclical Fratelli Tutti. In the second part, he characterizes the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching on the war starting from the teachings of St. Augustine, through the lectures of St. Tomas Aquinas and the teaching of the popes after World War II. The final section analyzes Pope Francis’ statements on the war in Ukraine during Sunday’s Angelus prayer.

Opis:: Apel papieża Franciszka – skierowany 15 listopada 2019 r. do uczestników XX Kongresu Międzynarodowego Stowarzyszenia Prawa Karnego – o prawną ochronę środowiska, w tym karną przez uznanie ekobójstwa na całym świecie za przestępstwo ścigane i karane został przez adresatów przyjęty jako mocne wsparcie podejmowanych przez nich inicjatyw w tym zakresie. Synteza dotychczasowych wysiłków oraz trudności we wprowadzaniu adekwatnej do sytuacji regulacji międzynarodowej przedstawione zostały w p. 1 artykułu. W tym samym przemówieniu Franciszek zapowiedział aktywną współpracę Kościoła, m.in. wprowadzenie do Katechizmu Kościoła Katolickiego pojęcia grzechu ekologicznego. W p. 2 artykułu przeprowadzono krytykę terminu w aspekcie logicznym, językowym, odkrywając pierwotne wyrażenie z pism L. Boffa (grzech anytekologiczny), aktualne nauczanie papieży oraz termin użyty przez profesora prawa karnego L. Aroyyo Zapatero – grzech ekobójstwa.
The appeal of Pope Francis for the legal protection of environment, including the criminal action, by worldwide recognition of the ecocide as a prosecutable and punishable crime, directed on 15 November 2019 to the participants of the 20th Congress of the International Criminal Law Association, was accepted as a sign of a strong support for its initiatives in this scope. The first part of the paper presents the synthesis of the current efforts in this aspect and showcases the problems in implementing regulations appropriate to the present situation. Simultaneously, Pope Francis announced an active cooperation of the Church, i.e. including the concept of the ecological sin in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. In the second point of this paper, a criticism of the term in the logical and linguistic aspect was expressed, discovering the primary expression of the letters L. Boff (anti-ecological sin), current teaching of Popes and term used by Professor of criminal law L. Aroyyo Zapatero – sin of ecocide.

Opis:: Studying language through naturally-occurring data is easily feasible nowadays thanks to the use of concordancers. Using the software package AntConc by Laurence Anthony, the author approaches the linguistic style of Pope Francis in four of his apostolic exhortations. His lexical frequencies are compared to those of Venerable Fr. Tomás Morales, a Spanish Jesuit (1908–1994) who is considered a prophet of our time for anticipating the teachings of the Second Vatican Council twenty years beforehand. The two have several aspects in common, mainly in making laypeople aware of the universal call to sanctity and the missionary responsibility acquired in baptism. The results of the comparison show a similarity in the lexical choices. The article’s conclusions and implications are considered in relation to the word in education and in evangelization.

Opis:: The issue that is present in the area of social life is violence. This applies to the past and the present. Christians have refrained from using violence in their personal lives from the beginning. It became problematic when they en-tered the public life, which was particularly evident after 313. Hence their re-flection on the phenomenon of violence, including the concept of a just war. Confrontation with abuses has forced Christian thinkers into deeper reflections on violence. It was at the end of the Middle Ages, and it is also present, includ-ing in the teaching of contemporary popes Benedict XVI and Francis. The first proposed an intellectual debate, which proved to be difficult to implement. Pope Francis chose a simpler solution – he prefers friendship gestures and statements that do not bother any religion (especially Islam) for violence and its spectacular form – terrorism. This is attractive on the one hand because it pre-vents the tension, and on the other hand makes it difficult to reach the root of the problem and consequently solve it. Many point to the superficiality of this approach and therefore proposes more concrete actions. By presenting Islam, it is emphasized that Muslims themselves should undertake efforts to break away from violence (terrorism), while Christians are obliged to help in this endeav-our.

Opis:: Christians feel that they should not be indifferent to war, and that it is their duty to react to harm, particularly done to civilians. Catholics expect their greatest authority, the Pope, to have a firm say about war and peace. May people, however, have had the impression that Pope Francis is erratic and assesses the situation in a wrong way. Although he follows the beaten track paved by the Church’s social science and Vatican diplomacy, some of his statements (and things left unsaid) caused and still are causing controversy. The article attempts at understanding the position of Pope Francis. It analyses his utterances regarding war, taken from sources such as the book titled Against War, speeches and social media (Twitter).

Opis:: The fundamental issue from the perspective of this article is politics, and more specifically the relationship between religion and politics. Tis relationship can be summarized in the question that is the proper issue of this analysis, it is the question of dialogue between religion and politics, the question of whether politics can be an eﬀective and useful tool in liberating the world from its problems (i.e. wars, social and economic inequalities, ecological crisis), or it can be a tool for avoiding and eliminating contemporary threats to man and his culture, to the world. The above question can be reformulated as follows: can the Church in its evangelization and inculturation activities, operating in diﬀerent cultures and countries with diﬀerent political systems and doctrines, cooperate (build bridges) with politics. Is the dialogue between religion and politics possible (real) or not for various reasons (e.g. doctrinal)? Can cooperation of religion and politics, at the local and international level (according to the principle: think globally, act locally) contribute to the implementation of the project of “common Home” proposed by Pope Francis?

Opis:: The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican II restored the homily proper role in the liturgy of the Mass, making it an integral part of it. It was the realization of this demand to recover theology and preaching. Homily is beyond its explanatory and informative role, which was dominant in predicting before the Council. The preachers’ statements show the dissemination of the homily of the Church in Poland was not raised easily, and preachers preach willingly returned to a theme, focused on the truths of faith and morals. Opis:: Papież Franciszek niejednokrotnie kieruje do katolików wezwanie do nawrócenia. Dokonuje on jednak amplifikacji samego pojęcia „nawrócenie”, wyznaczając nowe perspektywy badawcze, do których należy m.in. problem „nawrócenia ekologicznego” oraz podejście do kwestii nawrócenia konfesyjnego. Papież dokonuje również amplifikacji modelu nawrócenia, modyfikując go i nadając mu jednowektorowy kierunek. Warto zatem dokonać namysłu, przed jakimi wyzwaniami — wobec papieskiego wołania o nawrócenie — staje współczesna refleksja teologiczna oraz pastoralna działalność Kościoła.
Pope Francis repeatedly calls Catholics to conversion. However, he amplifies the very concept of “conversion” outlines new research perspectives, which include, among others, the problem of “ecological conversion” and the approach to the question of confessional conversion. The Pope also amplifies the model of conversion, modifying it and giving it a single-vector direction. It is therefore worth reflecting on the challenges that contemporary theological reflection and the Church’s pastoral activity are facing in the face of the papal call for conversion.
