Opis:: The present paper focuses on the changing interpretations of the English gerund. Since no method can accurately and uniformly account for the meanings of all instances of existing -ing forms, previous studies have offered approximate characterizations based on small samples. This study looks at the numbers of -ing derivations denoting institutionalized activities, on the assumption that these represent non-eventive readings. The derivations in question are arranged chronologically in terms of their time of coinage to compare changing productivity levels of this process relative to -ry derivations. This count shows that -ing suffi xations outnumber other nominalization processes and this trend has increased in the last two centuries.

Opis:: This text is an attempt to apply the concept of a legal text unit to the description of strictly defined structures of legal texts, namely the gerund strings. The main attention is focused on the methods used to identify multi-segment terminological structures and on distinguishing them from strings that constitute a combination of linguistic expressions. The overall conclusion of such analysis is based on the indication of the mechanism used for connecting and limiting gerund structures in this scope. Therefore, this work includes, among others, the formal procedure of verification, which allows for distinguishing, with significant precision, the syntactic constructions with gerund forms and similar sequences of terms.

Opis:: In Modern English the gerund, historically a nominalized verb in –ung(e), is marked by a gradient of increasing verbalization, from full noun (the reading of the book) to nearly full verbalization (... John having read his essay very carefully), which is due to morphological syncretism in Early Middle English with the present participle in –ind(e). It is demonstrated that this (re)verbalization can be traced diachronically from its incipient phase to Modern English. It also allows us to fine-tune our terminology as to the most recent stage in terms of verbalized or verbal gerund, which at first sight seems to be a contradictio in terminis. In light of the data it is argued that –ing forms after verbs of perception (We saw him working in the garden) can also be interpreted as (semi-)gerunds, featuring at the extreme right of the gradient; ‘‘semi-”, because such structures lack one nominal property, viz. the genitival subject (...*his working in the garden). The historical history and development of the gerund in English can be described as a triadic process: VERB – NOUN – VERB.

Verbal noun in Arabic and Hebrew : comparison

Opis:: We compared the use of verbal nouns in Modern Standard Arabic and Modern Hebrew. The main source of examples were two novels by Amos Oz (My Michael, A Tale of Love and Darkness) and their Arabic translations. In Modern Hebrew there are four types of verbal nouns, according to their grammatical features, syntactic functions and stylistic value: 1. deverbal noun ktiva ‘writing’, 2. gerund beħotvo ‘during his writing’, 3. infinitive liħtov ‘to write’ and 4. adverb katov ‘[while] writing’. In Modern Standard Arabic all verbal nouns display similar grammatical features and have similar syntactic functions. The Arabic verbal noun is an exact functional equivalent of the Hebrew deverbal noun ktiva. Other Hebrew verbal nouns are translated into Arabic as finite verbs or active participles, less frequently as verbal nouns. As far as the verbal noun is concerned, the most important difference between the two languages is the existence of the infinitive in Hebrew, a form that is lacking in Arabic. We also noticed that the Hebrew verbal nouns are stylistically diverse (contrary to the Arabic ones), what creates difficulty in achieving translational equivalence in terms of style.

Opis:: The goal of this paper is to compare spanish gerundio and polish adverbial imiesłów. We examine the morphological characteristics, origin and development of these word classes. Then we focus on it's syntactic behaviour and we present some examples of discrepancies between the two languages.
W artykule porównane zostały dwie części mowy - hiszpańskie gerundio i polski imiesłów przysłówkowy, które pomimo wielu cech wspólnych mają odmienny zakres użycia. Po wymienieniu cech morfologicznych oraz opisaniu genezy i rozwoju obydwu formacji przedstawiono reguły składniowe, które określają konteksty występowania tych formacji (wraz z interpretacją semantyczną). Na zakończenie zaprezentowane zostały przykłady (głównie literackie), w których ze względów składniowych lub stylistycznych gerundio nie tłumaczy się za pomocą imiesłowu przysłówkowego i odwrotnie.

Opis:: Tematem pracy jest analiza najczęściej popełnianych błędów w użyciu gerundio w języku hiszpańskim. W pierwszym rozdziale pracy została zaprezentowana teoria dotycząca gerundio. W drugim rozdziale, dzięki analizie różnych gramatyk języka hiszpańskiego i innych publikacji na ten temat, została zaproponowana lista najbardziej problematycznych użyć gerundio. Zostały one przedstawione z uwzględnieniem możliwości wystąpienia zjawiska interferencji z języka angielskiego oraz z języka polskiego. Trzeci rozdział koncentruje się na temacie analizy błędów. Teoria dotycząca tego tematu została zobrazowana poprzez ankietę przeprowadzoną wśród studentów uczących się języka hiszpańskiego na poziomie B1.
El tema principal del trabajo es el análisis de los errores más frecuentemente cometidos en el uso del gerundio en español. En el primer capítulo se presenta una explicación teórica sobre el gerundio. En el segundo capítulo, mediante el análisis de varias gramáticas de la lengua española y de otras publicaciones que tratan este tema, se propone una lista de los usos más problemáticos del gerundio. Se presentan teniendo en cuenta las posibles interferencias del inglés y del polaco. El tercer capítulo se centra en el tema del análisis de errores. Las indicaciones teóricas manejadas se confrontan con los resultados del cuestionario realizado por el grupo de estudiantes de lengua española de nivel intermedio.
The principal subject of the thesis is the analysis of most frequently committed errors in the use of Spanish gerund. In the first chapter, the theory of gerund is presented. In the second chapter, the analysis of various Spanish language grammar handbooks and other publications about the mentioned subject made possible creating a list of the most problematic cases of the gerund's uses. They are presented including cases of possible interferences of English and Polish. The third chapter speaks about error analysis. Theory of this subject is confronted with a questionnaire carried out among a group of the Spanish language students (level intermediate).

Opis:: It is described the use of Spanish aspectual verbal constructions in directive utterances between the 12th and 21st centuries. It is argued that, in addition to their aspectual values, these constructions fulfil some pragmatic functions in formal registers, especially some politeness verbal strategies in legal and administrative discourse, as well as the expression of instructions in procedural discourse. Some other illocutionary functions are found in dialogue. These non aspectual functions are documented from classical Spanish to the 20th century.

On the (over)productivity of contemporary nomina actionis

Opis:: In the spoken texts of the contemporary Polish language, there is a tendency to replace irregular but well-established in the dictionary of gerund formations (nomina acti) with regular formations (nomina actionis). The article discusses the causes of this phenomenon. The author distinguishes four factors determining a higher frequency of nomina actionis: semantic, contextual, innovative (linguistic changes) and situational-varietal. He attaches the greatest importance to the innovative factor, considering the increased productivity of nomina actionis as a manifestation of the most important contemporary mechanism of language development, i.e. its economisation.
W tekstach mówionych współczesnej polszczyzny można zauważyć tendencję do zastępowania nieregularnych, ale dobrze utrwalonych w słowniku odczasownikowych formacji transpozycyjnych (tzw. nomina acti) przez formacje regularne (nomina actionis). W artykule omówiono przyczyny tego zjawiska. Autor wyróżnia cztery czynniki determinujące wyższą frekwencję nomina actionis: semantyczny, kontekstowy, innowacyjny (zmiany językowe) oraz sytuacyjno-odmianowy. Największe znaczenie przypisuje czynnikowi innowacyjnemu i uznaje zwiększoną produktywność nomina actionis za przejaw działania najważniejszego współcześnie mechanizmu rozwojowego języka, jakim jest jego ekonomizacja.

The gerund in Portuguese and Spanish: a contrastive study
O gerúndio em português e espanhol: estudo contrastivo

Opis:: O presente trabalho é um estudo contrastivo do gerúndio em português e espanhol. Primeiro, aborda as questões relativas ao emprego e à função desta forma gramatical em ambas as línguas românicas, com enfoque nas diferenças que são frequentemente ignoradas numa análise comparativa das línguas, embora estas possam causar dificuldades de tradução e erros na aprendizagem do espanhol por parte dos falantes de português. Em seguida, apresentam-se os resultados dum estudo sociolinguístico cujos resultados mostraram que a norma-padrão da língua não sempre corresponde à língua em uso. De mesmo modo, centrar-nos-emos na análise do Memorial do Convento de José Saramago e na sua tradução para espanhol feita por Basilio Losada. Este capítulo dedica-se ao gerúndio na linguagem literária e as conclusões retiradas da análise são ainda mais interessantes à luz daquelas obtidas na parte que trata da linguagem coloquial.
Niniejsza praca jest studium kontrastywnym formy odczasownikowej gerundio w językach portugalskim i hiszpańskim. W pierwszym rozdziale, omawia się kwestie dotyczące użycia i funkcji tej formy gramatycznej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem różnic, które można zaobserwować analizując gerundio z perspektywy diachronicznej i synchronicznej oraz dokonując wspólnej dla obu języków kwalifikacji.Celem części praktycznej pracy było natomiast prześledzenie zastosowania i funkcji gerundio w języku kolokwialnym i literackim. Przeprowadzone badanie socjolingwistyczne oraz analiza książki José Saramago Memorial do Convento i jej przekładu na język hiszpański autorstwa Basilio Losady wykazały, że gerundio w obu językach romańskich występuje w różnych kontekstach i z różną częstotliwością.
The present bachelor’s thesis is a contrastive study of gerund in Portuguese and Spanish. The first chapter discusses issues concerning the use and function of this grammatical form, with particular emphasis on the differences that can be observed when analyzing gerundio from a diachronic and synchronic perspective and making a common qualification between the two languages. The aim of the practical part of the study, on the other hand, was to trace the use and function of gerund in colloquial and literary language. The sociolinguistic study carried out and the analysis of José Saramago's book Memorial do Convento and its translation into Spanish by Basilio Losada showed that gerund in both Romance languages occurs in different contexts and frequency.
