Opis:: The inquiry delivered in Fryderyk Kwiatkowski’s chapter of possible affinities between ancient gnosticism and utopian/dystopian texts has not been performed in comparative studies. The aim of the paper is therefore to demonstrate that the gnostic thought is replete with notions that may have served as the pre-modern source of the constructive characteristics present in utopias and dystopias. Kwiatkowski examines the Hollywood film "Dark City" (1998) as the primary case study for his investigative research. Other sources of his substantive research include American films, for instance "The Matrix" (1998), "The Truman Show" (1998) "Pleasantville" (1998), and "Equilibrium" (2002). Kwiatkowski coins the notion of the "gnostic dystopia" and classifies his research sources as the cinematic exemplifications for the term. Kwiatkowski shows how the concept can be referred to classic dystopias in which structural and narrative traits are consistent with the gnostic thought.

Opis:: Philip Kindred Dick (1928–1982), mimo że od jego śmierci minęło już ponad trzydzieści lat, zainteresowaniem polskich badaczy literatury i kultury zaczął się cieszyć dopiero niedawno, co ma z pewnością ścisły związek z dość późną nobilitacją science fiction jako gatunku wartego refleksji naukowej. Mimo że powstaje coraz więcej artykułów oraz prac naukowych poświęconych pisarzowi, nadal brakuje obszernej i wyczerpującej monografii jego twórczości. Praca pt. „Gnoza i motywy gnostyckie w wybranych powieściach i opowiadaniach Philipa K. Dicka” również z pewnością nie wyczerpuje zagadnienia, stanowi raczej skromną próbę rekonstrukcji pewnych pomysłów i teorii, jakie znaleźć można na kartach książek Dicka. Jest również ukłonem w stronę tego wyjątkowego autora i jego dzieł, które mimo upływu lat nie tracą nic na aktualności. Celem niniejszej pracy jest przede wszystkim przybliżenie czytelnikowi specyficznego systemu religijnego stworzonego przez Philipa K. Dicka. Choć system ten stanowi mieszankę różnych religii i idei filozoficznych, zwykło się go określać mianem gnostycyzmu bądź gnozy, i właśnie wątki gnostyckie w twórczości Dicka są głównym przedmiotem zainteresowania autorki. W pracy nie zostaje przedstawiona szczegółowa rekonstrukcja wierzeń Dicka – chodzi raczej o prześledzenie drogi duchowych poszukiwań pisarza oraz płynące z proponowanych przezeń koncepcji konsekwencje. Na podstawie powieści i opowiadań Philipa K. Dicka („Ubik”, „Odmiana druga”, „Czy androidy marzą o elektrycznych owcach?”, „Możemy cię zbudować”, „Przez ciemne zwierciadło”, „Labirynt śmierci”, „VALIS” oraz „Transmigracja Timothy’ego Archera”), a także jego esejów, listów i notatek, skonfrontowane zostają deklaracje pisarza i ich twórcze realizacje. W wybranych utworach szczególny nacisk kładzie się na kwestie obcości i transgresji oraz ich zderzenie z programem pozytywnym, jakim jest religia. Powstaje pytanie, w jaki sposób gnostycyzm przyczynia się do oswajania postmodernistycznej rzeczywistości i czy wobec człowieka może pełnić funkcję ocalającą. By na nie odpowiedzieć, praca wskazuje nie tylko na inspiracje, z których Dick czerpał przy formułowaniu swojego projektu religijnego, lecz także pewne lęki i obsesje, które wprowadziły go na drogę gnozy. Zostaje ukazany sposób, w jaki sposób pisarz stara się przepracować swoje fobie przy pomocy religii, a także porażka tej „autoterapii”: proponowany przez Dicka pozytywny ogląd świata nie znajduje bowiem pełnego odzwierciedlenia w jego twórczości. Pracę zamykają wnioski dotyczące potencjału gnozy jako nowego paradygmatu dla świata i człowieka współczesnego oraz próba podsumowania przesłania płynącego ze wszystkich utworów Dicka, które pozostaje niezmienne mimo ich wewnętrznych sprzeczności, a które można zamknąć w prostym i uniwersalnym dla wszystkich religii nakazie: „Bądź dobry”.
Despite the fact that since the death of American SF writer Philip Kindred Dick (1928-1982) passed over thirty years, his work has only started finding recognition among the polish scholars relatively recently, a fact which is certainly related to the late recognition of the sf genre as a subgenre of fiction worthy of research. Even though more and more articles devoted to the writer are being published, there is still a lack of a exhaustive monography devoted to his works. The work entitled „Gnosis and gnostic elements in select novels and short stories of Philip K. Dick“ is certainly not an exhaustive exploration of the topic, but rather is a humble attempt at reconstruction of certain ideas and theories which can be found among the pages of Dick‘s books. It is also a nod towards that unique author and his works, which remain relevant to this day. The aim of this work is to acquaint the reader with the unique religious system created by Philip Kindred Dick. Although said system constitutes a mixture of different religions and philosophical systems, it has come to be referred to as gnosis or gnosticism, and it is those gnostic themes contained within Dick‘s writing that are the focus of this work. The work is not a detailed reconstruction of Philip K. Dick‘s beliefs, but rather a retracing of his spiritual search and the conventions proposed therein. The writer‘s declarations and their artistic realization is confronted based on his novels and short stories ("Ubik", "Second Variety", "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", "We Can Build You", "A Scanner Darkly", "Maze of Death", "VALIS" and "The Transmigration of Timothy Archer") and also on his essays, letters and notes. In select works special emphasis is placed on the alienation and transgression, and their clash with the positive program which is religion. A question is raised: how does gnosticism contribute to the taming of postmodern reality and whether it can fulfill a salvating function towards man.

Opis:: In the author’s opinion the story depicted in "The Truman Show" (1998) by Peter Weir comprises a reinterpretation of a Gnostic myth about the liberation of a „divine spark” from the material world. In spite of the fact that the director did not know about Gnosticism before he started to make the film, the author of the article presents that many motifs in his work can be viewed through the ideas expressed in various Gnostic systems. The Gnostic notions were reinterpreted in "The Truman Show" on a fundamental level of the world being presented in as well as in the narrative structure of the movie.

Opis:: The current study aims to compare selected Gnostic conceptual categories from Nag Hammadi texts with the literary version of gnosis proposed by Bruno Schulz (1892–1942). He was not aware of the texts found in 1948, but he utilized his knowledge of Gnosis and Gnosticism, which was accessible in the Polish literary community at that time. This included his study of early Christian anti-Gnostic polemicists. The proposed comparison of text fragments from Nag-Hammadi with Schulz’s gnosis seeks to demonstrate the ongoing literary appeal of the apocryphal nature of Gnostic gnosis in the writing of the teacher of the drawings from Drohobych.

Opis:: Artykuł ukazuje zbieżność niektórych wątków w twórczości Stanisława Lema dotyczących ciała z niektórymi ujęciami gnostycyzmu. Omówione zostały następujące utwory: Cyberiadzie, Bajkach robotów, Dziennikach gwiazdowych, Wizji lokalnej i w Masce. W analizowanych utworach pojawia się motyw ciała ludzkiego w oczach Obcych (scil. robotów i kosmitów). Postrzegane jest ono jako odrażające – podobnie jak ludzkie zwyczaje. Wątek ten jest zbieżny z gnostycką wrogością wobec ciała. Odpowiednikami złośliwego Demiurga z mitów gnostyckich są u Lema Bann i Pugg oraz inni nieudolni kreatorzy. Lem ukazuje ciało ludzkie jako niedoskonałe i będące produktem przypadku, a nawet błędu czy wybryku natury, co odpowiada gnostyckiej tezie, że człowiek żyje na świecie w wyniku pomyłki lub katastrofy w Pleromie. W utworach Lema pojawia się też negatywna ocena seksualności, tak jak w gnostycyzmie. Wreszcie, istotnym elementem gnostycyzmu jest poczucie obcości w świecie – wątek ten obecny jest w Masce. Na końcu podjęta zostaje próba wyjaśnienia zbieżności między lemowskim i gnostyckim ujęciem ciała.
The article shows the convergence of some motifs in Stanisław Lem’s work on the body with some approaches to body in Gnosticism. The following works were discussed: The Cyberiad, Fables for Robots, The Star Diaries, Inspection at the Scene of the Crime and The Mask. In the analyzed works, the theme of the human body appears in the eyes of Aliens and robots. It is perceived as disgusting – just like human habits. This theme coincides with the Gnostic hostility towards the body. The counterparts of the malicious Demiurge in Gnostic myths are in Lem’s works Bann and Pugg, and other inept creators. Lem portrays the human body as imperfect and the product of chance, even a mistake or a freak of nature, which corresponds to the Gnostic thesis that man lives in the world as a result of a mistake or a catastrophe in the Pleroma. In Lem’s works there is also a negative assessment of sexuality, as in gnosticism. Finally, an important element of Gnosticism is a sense of alienation in the world – this theme is present in The Mask. Finally, an attempt is made to explain the convergence between the Lem’s and the Gnostic views of the body.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to present selected phenomena of the exclusive religiosity of Jerzy Hulewicz (1886–1941), that manifested itself through his editorial activity and literature. Publishing (in the years 1917–1922) the first literature magazine in the newly gaining independence Poland he also attempted to show in it not just the purely artistic content, but also neognostic spiritual searches. Hulewicz also developed his religious ideas in the literary works that followed, among which a special attention goes to the drama Kain (1920). In this very work he expressed the idea of a gnostic rebellion most clearly which was one of the constitutive elements of his own religiosity.

Opis:: This work is dedicated to the dialogue of two religious traditions in the work of Czesław Miłosz. It is an attempt to answer the question of relations between Gnosticism and Zen, and their role in Dalsze okolice, but also throughout Miłosz’s poetry. These two different types of spiritual experience, both reaching beyond the Christian view, are united in the work of Czesław Miłosz under the category of “internal dialogicality”, and — central to each — the issue of duality of subject and object of cognition. Milosz’s conflict between Gnosticism highlighting the problem of alienation in the world of nature and the Zen mind which is trying to cross this alienation, turns out to be an interesting example of dialogue between Western and Eastern philosophy. The dichotomous strucutre of this work allows the author to elaborate on the theoretical model of these relations, and then with the help of it, interpret the poetry of Czesław Miłosz.
