    Understanding dormant object : contributing to a fuller account of the entities implied in Graham Harman’s object-oriented ontology

    Although the idea of dormant or sleeping object explicitly appears in Graham Harman’s object-oriented ontology (OOO) writings, so far it has not been subjected to more careful analysis. This paper aims at filling this gap in secondary literature on OOO. It argues not only that is there no single unitary concept of dormancy in Harmanian relevant writings but also that there are ultimately three senses of dormant object that can be named: known non-knower, unknown knower and unknown non-knower. Moreover, the analysis of Harmanian dormancy, done in the paper after briefly reminding the relevant basics of OOO, provokes to wonder on the actual variety of different types of entities implied by Harman. Revealing them, in addition to the different types of dormant object, not only has systematising and clarifying value for OOO but also poses some problems for it, which are suggested at the paper’s end.

    The article is a critical reflection on the problem of agency of objects, which is analyzed on the basis of chair renewal in the perspective of Graham Harman’s Object-Oriented Ontology. In the course of the analysis it appears that the theory of the American philosopher is insufficient to grasp the problem of objects activity, therefore the article proposes an authorial posthuman category - the concept of performative capital - intended to answer the question of how objects work and, simultaneously, how they exist.

    Artykuł omawia problematykę opisu w twórczości Zygmunta Haupta z wykorzystaniem inspiracji płynących ze strony współczesnego „zwrotu deskryptywnego” w literaturoznawstwie. Przypomniane zostały wczesne diagnozy krytyki literackiej wskazującej na wyjątkową wartość opisów Haupta, które pisarz włączał do swych opowiadań, mimo iż zdawał sobie sprawę z kryzysu zdolności mimetycznych literatury. Świadomie podejmował przy tym wysiłek „usprawiedliwiania opisu”, który pojawiał się u niego, jak zauważył Jerzy Stempowski, albo jako część całościowej wizji świata zewnętrznego z przywoływanymi próbnie uzasadnieniami filozoficznymi, albo jako element zdarzających się bohaterom opowiadań Haupta chwilom styku z realnością dostępną w znalezionych przypadkiem ramach lub „prześwitach”. Artykuł omawia kolejno te dwie metody uzasadniania części deskryptywnych, wykorzystane zostały przy tym pojęcia realizmu spekulatywnego, a także filozofii Kazimierza Twardowskiego, z której korzystają rzecznicy nowych form realizmu we współczesnej filozofii.
    This article discusses the problem of description in the works of Zygmunt Haupt in the wider context of the contemporary “descriptive turn” in literary studies. First, early critical readings and reviews of Haupt’s exceptional descriptions, which the writer included in his stories even though he acknowledged a crisis of mimesis in literature, are discussed. Indeed, Haupt made a conscious effort to “justify description,” which played an important role in his works, as Jerzy Stempowski noticed, either as part of a comprehensive vision of the outside world with tentatively invokes philosophical justifications or in moments during which Haupt’s characters come into contact with reality in and through accidental openings or “windows.” The article discusses these two respective methods of justifying description, drawing on speculative realism as well as the philosophy of Kazimierz Twardowski, which inspires the contemporary advocates of new philosophical realisms.

    Between BEING and PERFORMING. PERFORMATIVE CAPITAL OF THINGS

    W niniejszej pracy analizuję sposoby performowania przedmiotów w trzech różnych praktykach: odnawiania mebli, upcyklingu i designu spekulatywnego. Na początku sygnalizuję pewne dominujące podejścia i tendencje w filozofii XX i XXI wieku, by wskazać na potrzebę i pewną nieuchronność pojawienia się filozofii określonej mianem realizmu spekulatywnego. Następnie prezentuję ujęcia filozoficzne dwóch realistów spekulatywnych, Grahama Harmana – którego ontologia stanowi fundament dla moich rozważań – oraz inspirującego się nim Iana Bogosta. Przedstawiam stosowane przez nich narzędzia i siatki pojęciowe, które następnie aplikuję do własnych rozważań nad przedmiotem. Kategoriami zaczerpniętymi od Harmana posługuję się w celu dostrzeżenia i analizy sposobów performowania rzeczy w wyżej wymienionych praktykach. Na kartach mojej pracy staram się udowodnić, że perspektywa ontologiczna nie pozwala mi uchwycić kwestii sprawczości przedmiotów, dlatego uzupełniam ją o pojęcie performatywności, co w konsekwencji prowadzi mnie do zdefiniowania własnej kategorii kapitału performatywnego. Kapitał performatywny w moich rozważaniach zastępuję ontologię przedmiotu, koncentrując się nie na tym „jaki przedmiot jest”, ale „jak działa”.
    In this work I analyze the way objects are performing in three different practices: furniture renovation, upcycling and speculative design. At the beginning, I am signaling certain dominant approaches and tendencies in the philosophy of the twentieth and twenty-first century, to indicate the need of the emergence of a philosophy called speculative realism. Then I present the philosophical approaches of two speculative realists , Graham Harman – whose ontology is the foundation for my reflections – and Ian Bogost who is inspired by Harman. I show their tools and conceptual grids, which I apply to my own considerations of the things. Categories borrowed from Harman I use to notice and analyze ways the things perform in the aforementioned practices. On the pages of my work I try to prove that the ontological perspective does not allow me to grasp the issue of the agency of objects, which is why I complement it with the concept of performativity, which in turn leads me to define my own category I called performative capital. The performative capital in my deliberations replaces the ontology of thing and indicates not “what the object is” but “how it works”.

    This book examines the importance of flat ontologies for law and sociolegal theory. Associated with the emergence of new materialism in the humanities and social sciences, the elaboration of flat ontologies challenges the binarism that has maintained the separation of culture from nature, and the human from the nonhuman. Although most work in legal theory and sociolegal studies continues to adopt a non-flat, anthropocentric and immaterial take on law, the critique of this perspective is becoming more and more influential. Engaging the increasing legal interest in flat ontologies, this book offers an account of the main theoretical perspectives, and their importance for law. Covering the work of the five major theorists in the area – Gabriel Tarde, Bruno Latour, Manuel DeLanda, Karen Barad and Graham Harman – the book aims to encourage this interest, as well as to explicate the important problems of and differences between these perspectives. Flat ontologies, the book demonstrates, can offer a valuable new perspective for understanding and thinking about law. This book will appeal mainly to scholars and students in legal theory and sociolegal studies; as well as others with interests in the posthumanist turn in philosophy and social theory.
