PAINTER IN ARTISTIC STRUGGLE WITH TRADITION The Concept of Anxiety as Influenced by Harold Bloom In a letter to another poet, Wallace Stevens, American poet and essayist, wrote: [...] I consciously resigned from reading mannered poets such as Eliot or Pound, in order to avoid taking anything from them, even unconsciously. In contrast to that attitude, young German expressionists with full consciousness seek inspiration at the beginning of their artistic career mainly in post-impressionist movement, discovering in direct or indirect contact (exhibitions) the power of color and their own creative power, due to what did their precursors. In his publication entitled ‘The anxiety of influence’, Bloom wrote that ‘poetic influence is not required to make poets become less original; equally often it makes them more original, though not necessarily better’. The main animators of expressionism in German painting and graphics (Emil Nolde, Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoschka, George Grosz, Max Bechstein, Ernest Ludwig Kirchner, Vasily Kandinsky, Alexei Jawlenski, Franz Marc, August Macke, Egon Schiele) turned out to be maybe not better than Precursors, but undeniably original. Undoubtedly artistic path of each of these artists can be decomposed according to Bloom’s scheme, based on six revisions for allowing to understand ... how one poet walks away from another, which would confirm the legitimacy of using Bloom’s philosophical-literary theory in relation to visual arts. Such awareness validates the idea of interpreting artistic career of Polish renown artist Zdzislaw Nitka, who gave his habilitation dissertation the following title: Painter on the shoulders of the artist – that is a tribute to the masters.

This essay – actually a scientific article included in the frame composition – is devoted to the innovative interpretation of literary agon in terms of the knight ethos on the background of Harold Bloom’s “anxiety of influence”, additionally enriched with references to Aeschylus’ and Eurypide’s “duel” in the Frogs by Aristophanes. On theoretical and methodological ground, the main research path is associated with an additional interpretation of Harold Bloom’s idea of intervals.

This paper deals with the current debates as whether literary canon or classical works are destined to fall into oblivion or survive. The American literary critic Harold Bloom is very pessimistic about the future of literary studies and teaching literature as a whole. In his books, he makes elegiac conclusions about the Departments of English Language and Literature, which are likely to be renamed into the departments of Cultural Studies. His another concern is the literary “isms” and “ologies” which he considers to be destroying literature. The paper also focuses on the nature of reading and its various impacts on the reader, and its significance for literature students. The aim of the paper is to show that despite some grain of truth in Bloom’s writings as regards lack of aesthetic value of literary works in the postmodernist period when popular culture has taken over the canon works, there is no reason to worry about the present state of literary studies and literary criticism.

The article explores the connections between the notions of canon and anthology. The organizing principles of the anthology are contrasted with the tradition of early modern poetic miscellanea. The discussion focuses on the theoretical assumptions of one of the most prominent critics of the last century, Harold Bloom, as expounded in his seminal study, The Western Canon, and his contribution as the author of many important anthologies. In particular, it points to Bloom’s ongoing preoccupation with human mortality and his belief in the salvific function of human memory.
Artykuł omawia związek pojęcia antologii i kanonu. Idea antologii została zestawiona z wczesnonowożytnymi miscellaneami. Dyskusja koncentruje się na omówieniu poglądów jednego z najważniejszych literaturoznawców minionego stulecia, Harolda Blooma, wyłożonych w jego dziele The Western Canon i jego dorobku jako autora lub współautora wielu znaczących antologii. W szczególności, nacisk został położony na powracający w pismach Blooma temat ludzkiej śmiertelności i wiarę krytyka pokładaną w zbawczej funkcji pamięci.

Opis:
The purpose of this text is to reflect on the process of building individual identity in the culture of education. The adopted perspective is based primarily on the concepts of culture and the place of the subject in it, derived from the thought of Richard Rorty and Harold Bloom. This perspective affords a look at the process of building an individual in a mature way, devoid of naivety but also revealing the hardships and aporias accompanying this process. Education can be the primary way through which man tries to get along with the world. The condition for the fortunate effect of these struggles is building a culture that is democratic, or in Rorty’s words poetic.

In one of his plays entitled Hölderlin Alfonso Vallejo establishes direct and indirectconnections with life and poetry of romantic poet Friedrich Hölderlin. We analyse traces one author in writings of another using the theory of anxiety of influence by Harold Bloom. The process of self-understanding and comprehension of the art leads, according to Bloom, through a number of stages: clinamen, tessera, kenosis, demonisation, askesis and apophrades. We try to detect techniques used by Vallejo in his artistic pattern and determine what are aesthetic and formal consequences of his endeavor.

The article is an attempt to sum up Czesław Miłosz’s complicated relation with Adam Mickiewicz. The aim of the text is to outline Miłosz’s revisionary process and to focus on its last period called apophrades.
