This work compares and analyses the novels Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding. It aims to demonstrate and highlight the similarities that exist at the level of both form and content. It focuses mainly on the concept of marriage and romantic relationships, but also on family affairs. Furthermore, it draws attention to the fact that women, despite the progress and development of feminism, still face similar problems today as they did two hundred years ago. This fact is demonstrated by Fielding, who has succeeded brilliantly in transferring Austen’s plot to modern times and reflecting the features of Austen’s characters in her own protagonists, giving them credibility and a sense of realism that makes it easier for the reader to identify with the characters and understand their actions and emotions. Significant concepts discussed in this work are pride and prejudice, which in both novels are important factors that lead the protagonists into a misleading judgement. Additionally, this thesis defends Bridget Jones’s Diary and proves that, under the guise of humour and irony, it is concerned with serious issues and makes the readers reflect upon them. It also encourages acknowledging the phenomenons of adaptation and appropriation as creatively coexisting with original literary works.
Praca ta porównuje i analizuje powieści Duma i uprzedzenie Jane Austen oraz Dziennik Bridget Jones Helen Fielding. Ma ona na celu wykazać i uwypuklić wiele podobieństw istniejących zarówno na poziomie formy, jak i treści. Skupia się głównie na temacie małżeństwa i relacji romantycznych, ale także rodzinnych. Ponadto, zwraca uwagę na fakt, że kobiety, pomimo postępu i rozwoju feminizmu, nadal borykają się z problemami podobnymi do tych, jakie istniały dwieście lat temu. Fakt ten ukazuje, że Fielding udało się genialnie przenieść fabułę Austen na czasy współczesne i umiejscowić cechy jej postaci w swoich bohaterach, nadając im wiarygodności i realizmu, dzięki czemu czytelnikowi łatwiej jest utożsamić się z bohaterami i zrozumieć ich emocje i działania. Ważnymi zagadnieniami omawianymi w tej pracy są również tytułowe duma i uprzedzenie, które w obu powieściach są istotnymi czynnikami doprowadzającymi protagonistki do zbyt pochopnych osądów, które okazują się być mylne. Dodatkowo, praca ta broni Dziennika Bridget Jones i ukazuje, że pod płaszczykiem humoru i ironii kryje on poważne problemy i skłania do refleksji nad nimi. Zachęca również do zastanowienia się nad zjawiskami adaptacji i „przywłaszczenia” jako twórczymi kulturowo i współistniejącymi z oryginalnymi dziełami literackimi.

The dissertation focuses on the characters of Catherine Earnshaw from Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë and Helen Huntingdon from The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the two women’s marital struggles and investigate the characters of Catherine and Helen as products and victims of the patriarchal society of Victorian England. The first chapter constitutes a theoretical part and its objective is to provide background knowledge about the Victorian age, with special focus on the position of women in the society and family, and on their rights. Moreover, it introduces the Brontë sisters as women writers contributing to “The Woman Question” and creating progressive novels. The analytical part of the work - the second and the third chapter - centres on the close study of the characters of Catherine and Helen. It discusses the influence of the patriarchal society, as well as the existing laws and traditions on those women and their choices pertaining to marriage along with the consequences of those choices.
Niniejsza praca licencjacka poświęcona jest postaciom Katarzyny Earnshaw z “Wichrowych Wzgórz” autorstwa Emily Brontë oraz Helen Huntingdon z “Lokatorki Wildfell Hall” autorstwa Anne Brontë. Celem pracy jest analiza postaci Katarzyny i Helen jako produktów oraz ofiar patriarchalnego społeczeństwa wiktoriańskiej Anglii oraz ich problemów dotyczących małżeństwa. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi część teoretyczną i ma za zadanie przedstawić tło historyczne epoki wiktoriańskiej, ze szczególną uwagą na miejsce kobiet w społeczeństwie i rodzinie oraz ich praw. Ponadto, przedstawia on siostry Brontë jako kobiety pisarki oraz ich wkład w feministyczną debatę dotyczącą praw kobiet. Część analityczna pracy, czyli rozdział drugi i trzeci, skoncentrowane są na szczegółowym badaniu postaci Katarzyny oraz Helen. Omawiają one wpływ patriarchatu, a także obowiązujących praw i tradycji na kobiety i ich wybory dotyczące zamążpójścia, jak również konsekwencje tych wyborów.

Opis:
Gorgias, the teacher of Isocrates, is rarely mentioned in Isocrates’ works and never in a flattering way. He is also presented, among other masters and poets, on Isocrates’ grave in a way that appears to be consistent with his pupil’s thought. Thus, the author of the iconographic plan of the grave may have been either Isocrates himself or someone who sufficiently knew his works and properly understood his tempestuous relationship with his master.
