Philosophy presents itself as an endeavour to know oneself and understand others, to know the world and the universe around us, to investigate the limits of human cognition, to understand the relations between reason and mysticism, between reason and faith, and between philosophy and science. The history of western philosophy is an account of the strenuous eff orts to discover the truth and give it a reliable justification. But it must be preceded by a critical assessment of the abilities of our senses and reason and the removal of illusions, prejudices, falsehoods, and false philosophy. Philosophers usually perceive the philosophy of their time as something similar to the Augean stables requiring a radical cleaning to turn philosophising into an unbiased investigation. The philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Leibniz, Kant and Hegel, as well as logical positivism and analytical philosophy are good examples of Herculean labours, involving one’s entire intellectual and mental powers. But it is not Erystheus, a tool in the hands of fate and gods, who orders philosophers to make these gigantic eff orts, but an internal imperative to discover the whole truth. Is philosophy a successful labour? Can philosophy be given up?

Niniejsza praca przedstawia zarys dziejów wizerunku Herkulesa w renesansowej sztuce Europy Zachodniej. Pierwsza część poświęcona jest sztuce sakralnej i wyjaśnia zjawisko adaptacji antycznego herosa przez Kościół. Znaleźć tu można przegląd wątków herkulejskich przewijających się w dziełach artystów i pisarzy chrześcijańskich. Drugi rozdział traktuje o sztuce i kulturze Florencji, gdzie Herkules postrzegany był jako patron miasta, wzór cnót obywatelskich i przykład władcy idealnego. W ostatniej części omawiane są związki Herkulesa z wielkimi władcami renesansowej Europy, którzy wierzyli, że są potomkami legendarnego półboga.
The Bachelor’s Dissertation concerns the history of the image of Hercules in Western European Art in the Renaissance period. The first part is devoted to sacred art and explains the issue of the adaptation of antique hero by the Church. Many herculean strands, which are present in the artists’ and Christian writers’ works, are to be found in this part. The second chapter covers the art and culture of Florence, in which Hercules was perceived as the patron of the city, a model of virtue and as an example of ideal ruler. In the last and final part, Hercules’ associations with great sovereigns of Renaissance Europe, who believed to be descendants of the legendary demigod, are discussed.

Motyw Herkulesa podejmowany z lubością przez artystów hiszpańskich złotego wieku pozwala postawić tezę, iż bohater ten miał pierwszorzędne znaczenie w ikonografii i sztuki hiszpańskiej. Zleceniodawcy zdobiąc swe rezydencje dziełami ukazującymi herosa, zbliżali się do prądu myśli humanistycznej największych ówczesnych ośrodków artystycznych. Ponadto propagowali za pomocą charakterystycznych cech Tebańczyka walory klas rządzących. Autorzy obrazów z przedstawieniami Herkulesa mogli natomiast sięgać po inspiracje do mitologii, omijając cenzurę. Tematyka Herkulesa stanowiła prawdziwe wyzwanie dla artystów, którzy ilustrując historie herosa, przedstawiali programy ikonograficzne dotykające jednocześnie kwestii polityki, wiary oraz historii.
Hercules Theme lovingly picked by the golden age of Spanish artists can be argued that this character was of paramount importance in the iconography of Spanish Art. Principals decorating their residences with works showing the hero, approached the current humanistic thought of the biggest contemporary art centers. In addition, through the characteristic qualities of Hercules, they propagated the values of the ruling classes. The authors of images presenting (showing) performances of Hercules were able to reach for inspiration to mythology, bypassing censorship. The subject of Hercules was a real challenge for the artists, who portrayed the hero’s stories illustrating the iconographic programs concerning, at the same time, issues of politics, faith and history.

Transposition of myth in Agatha Christies "Labours of Hercules"
Transpozycja mitu w „Dwunastu pracach Herkulesa” Agathy Christie

This paper aims to explore the specific relationship between the classical myth and popular literature on the example of “Labors of Hercules” by Agatha Christie. The first chapter is an introduction, in which the understanding of the terms necessary for the purposes of this work has been further specified. The second chapter presents the works of Agatha Christie's character in relation to the objectives of crime novels of the first half of the twentieth century. It also draws attention to the intertextuality of the author's works. The third chapter is devoted to the transposition of the myth of the twelve works of Hercules in selected detective story. The area of analysis is the storyline, space-time, the conduct of narrative and protagonist. The last part of the work, which is also its summary, deals with the relationship between the reader and mythical contexts contained in the texts of popular culture.
Niniejsza praca ma na celu zbadanie szczególnej relacji między mitem klasycznym a literaturą popularną na przykładzie „Dwunastu prac Herkulesa” Agathy Christie. Pierwszy rozdział ma charakter wstępu, w którym rozumienie terminów, koniecznych na potrzeby tej pracy, zostało dookreślone. Drugi rozdział przedstawia charakter twórczości Agathy Christie w odniesieniu do założeń powieści kryminalnej pierwszej połowy XX wieku. Zwraca też uwagę na intertekstualność utworów tej autorki. Rozdział trzeci jest poświęcony transpozycji mitu o dwunastu pracach Herkulesa w wybranej powieści detektywistycznej. Obszar analizy stanowi fabuła, czasoprzestrzeń, sposób prowadzenia narracji oraz postać głównego bohatera. Ostatnia część pracy, będąca zarazem jej podsumowaniem, zajmuje się relacją między czytelnikiem a kontekstami mitycznymi zawartymi w tekstach kultury popularnej.

The paper considers the symbolic aspects of the figure of Hercules depicted on a terra sigillata bowl discovered in Górzyca, Słubice County, in the context of the Roman mythical hero cult. Hercules, a superhuman hero equal to the gods, played a very special role in Roman religion and Imperial ideology. The vessel is an example of exquisite tableware produced in specialized provincial workshops. The relief decoration of such dishes allows us not only to identify particular potters and workshops, but also to propose the dating in terms of absolute chronology. Terra sigillata vessels constitute one of the most important categories of Roman imports in the Barbaricum, a community of Wielbark culture being one of the recipients
