Opis:
Małgorzata Pok’s Decolonial Animal Ethics in Linda Hogan’s Poetry and Prose: Towards Interspecies Thriving (2023) focuses on the relationship between the modern, hierarchical, anthropocentric view of non-human animals, and the traditional, relational view in Indigenous ontologies. In dialogue with human-animal studies, decolonial studies, and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), the study provides an in-depth engagement with the literary authorship of Chickasaw poet and novelist Linda Hogan. The questions that Poks asks are: What is the significance of Indigenous knowledges for the Anthropocene? How do these knowledges relate to the extinction of species and environmental grief? What insights are offered by Indigenous ethics to activists and decision makers in this regard? Despite the scope of Hogan’s production there is not much written about her literary production, Poks claims, even less so about the representation of the human-animal relationship in it. This is a lack which Poks makes up for in a thorough investigation of Hogan’s prose and poetry from the 1970’s until today. In Hogan’s works, themes like mercy, compassion, wildness, grief, and the connection between femininity and animality are in constant dialogue with the painful story of Indigenous America. Through Hogan’s own experiences in life, her description of places like Oklahoma and Colorado gain both material and metaphorical qualities. This is also the case with the landscapes and the non-human animals who inhabit them and who become agents in their own right in a constant yet shifting and transformative relationship to the human, who is thus decentered in effective ways.

Opis:
In philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Consequential Thomism we do not find any remarks concerning reciprocal references between man and animals. The entire attention is focused on mutual relations between people and God. This, to some extent, is understandable. Interpersonal references influence human happiness in the most significant way. Man would not be able to exist without other people, to build a family, work, enjoy life. But genuine reality is something more than personal beings. There are other beings, not only man, whose life and wellbeing influence human life. From man’s status as a reasonable being and ability to show empathy follows obligation to take care of the nature. He is supposed to care for animals not only with regard to his own existential situation and that of future generations. As Aristotle claims, useful love (friendship) is usually short-term and is not a genuine love. It does not include these domains in which there is no possibility for human to achieve benefits. Even more clear it is visible in love (friendship) for the sake of pleasantness which is the most fragile of all domains of love. Since it arises most frequently among young people this love is prone to changes as the moods are. Animals deserve human’s care and love regardless how much benefits or pleasure they supply to man. They deserve it because their ontic structure is real, good and beautiful. Love is a gift which we freely give to the other beings. It is a skill. Especially beautiful is love caritas which is expressed by selfless in giving ourselves without expecting anything in return. Selfless love is taught by these beings which need protection and care because they are not able to care for themselves. Among them, in majority, are sick and disabled persons, children and also animals. Analysis of the texts of St. Thomas and M. Gogacz shows that speaking about the relations of love and animals is not an absurd. Both of them offer suggestions that enable to understand this relation better. For Aquinas it is connaturalitas, for Gogacz it is extended meaning of caritas. Thus, none of these two philosophers would agree to admit animals a status of persons. What follows is that none of them would agree to denote a human-animal relation a friendship. Animals do not poses the intellect and will in their ontic structure and hence they are not able to experience any domain of spiritual love. They may – as it seems – build a relation of connaturalitas, experience the emotion of love, con-constitute a relation caritas, which on their part is a “steady positive affective attitude”. This “steady positive affective attitude” is something more than the feeling of love and is much more of steadiness. It is a real relation which, on the part of animal, is a steady attitude to love and affection (attachment). On the part of man it has a shape of love caritas. This relation does not link an animal with each man, not even with people known and liked. It links an animal with the closest carer, the one who is accepted by animal as its carer. This bond is particular, unique, reciprocally adaptive. Loss of a caregiver causes pain to animal. Sometimes animals get sick and even pass away too soon when separated from their caregiver. Carers also painfully experience separation when they lose animal in the result of its illness, accident or elderly age. It shows that a man-animal relation is something crucial. It contributes to the wellbeing of animal and happiness of man. It is important hence for man not to ascribe human feelings, emotions, strives and intentions to animals. Even more significant issue is to avoid making a mistake in adopting improper measure for love – to love animals more than people. Caritas with regard to animal cannot be considered the same caritas as the one related to other man. Such as distinctive is the power of amor towards God than towards human, that analogously should the power of love towards human be distinctive from love towards animal. Moreover, this love should be communicated in another way. Turning again to Gogacz’s thought we may conclude that man should love God proportionate to God’s nature, man proportionate to man’s nature and – let us add – love animal proportionate to animal’s nature.

Opis:
This paper historically traces the purposive domestication of pigeons in order to examine the dialectical relationship between nature and culture. It is demonstrated that each instance of the domestication of the pigeon for a new function (i.e., food, messenger) also entailed the construction of a role of the bird in human society, replete with symbolic representations and moral valuations. Yet it is also argued that, though animals are repositories for social meaning, and culture is literally inscribed into the physical structure of domesticated animals, such meanings are patterned and constrained according to the biological features of the animal itself. The ubiquitous and unwanted “street pigeon” now found around the globe is the descendent of escaped domestic pigeons, occupying the unique and ambiguous category of “feral”- neither truly wild nor domestic. Ironically, the very traits that were once so desirous and that were naturally selected for are now what make the feral pigeon so hard to get rid of and so loathsome.

Justice for animals according to Plutarch
Autorzy:
Miszczyński, Damian
Opis:
This paper is an attempt to describe Plutarch’s view on the idea of justice between animals and humans on the basis of a representative selection of passages from his works. Most of the analyzed passages are from De sollertiaanimaliumand De esu carnium. The criterion of selection was lexical and contextual, so passages containing words semantically related to the Greek terms for justice or law were particularly taken into account, as well as passages simply referring to the subject of justice for animals. The conclusion is that Plutarch believed that justice between humans and animals is possible and should be applied. However, conscious of how difficult this postulate is to achieve, he was content with urging people to limitthe consumption of meat.

Disease, aging, physical suffering and death are natural elements of life, common to both human and non-human animals. At the same time, an animal’s death is an experience to which humans, due to their limited ability to communicate with it, have limited access. This article, based on ethnographic research among companion animals’ caretakers, analyzes the cultural aspects of palliative care for a pet, with particular emphasis on the impact of the terminal disease on the specificity of human-animal relationships and the potential analogies and differences between the experience of disease and death of a close pet and a close person. The paper is an attempt at a multispecies ethnography, which involves extending the field of interest of anthropology to animals, understood as social actors, and their inclusion in the research process. I propose the concept of empathic pathographies as the central analytical category; that is, human narratives about the animal experience of illness and death.

Over the years Visions from San Francisco Bay (1969) has proven to be essential both to Miłosz’s life and to his writings. It was there that he formulated, for the fi rst time with such a force, the theses that would later reappear regularly in his essays and poetry. One vital aspect of the intellectual construction outlined in Visions was the concept of Nature. Miłosz proposed a “presentistic” approach, arguing for the concept of Nature as an indispensable element of contemporary thought. His refl ections were restricted to motifs closely related to his theses about Nature: Nature and beauty, human/animal relations, and the theory of evolution.

The picture book Flotsam depicts a boy who meets animals at a beach and finds an analog camera as flotsam, with which he discovers a peculiar underwater world. In the book, human-animal-relations are reflected dialectically in the context of visual perception with art, namely photography and fine arts, as well as literature, being used as the medium of reflection.
