Opis:
George H. Mead ([1934] 1967) contended a person’s sense of self develops from language-based interactions with other humans in society. According to contemporary sociologists, a person’s sense of self is also influenced by non-verbal interactions with human and non-human animals. The present research extends Sanders (1993) work that examined how dog owners relate to their pets and come to develop a unique social identity for them. Through interviews with participants in prison-based animal programs (PAPs), this research explores whether inmates engaged in a similar process of assigning the animals with which they work a human-like identity. The implications of the relationships that develop in terms of desistance, which Maruna (2001) argued requires a redefinition of a person’s self-identity, are discussed.

Opis:
The theoretical background of the parents–teachers relation is systemic approach. It is the basis for a critical analysis of the pedagogization idea, treated as instructive interaction. Expert interaction between parents and teachers was proposed. The proposal of those relations based on the healing orientation by K. Ludewig was presented at the end of the article. The practical aim is to generate reflection and eventually activities to implement the particular suggestions in teachers’ pedagogical work.

Opis:
It is widely agreed that perspective-taking plays an important role in the development of children’s understanding of themselves and others as social agents with their own beliefs, desires, goals, and representations of the world. However, how perspective-taking is realized and how the ability of perspective-taking develops is a matter of dissensus. The two theories currently dominating social cognition research, theory-theory, and simulation-theory construe perspective-taking as modeling, thus as an individual and inferential process. Interactionist theories prioritize interpersonal interaction but deny perspective-taking a constitutive role by arguing for a basic, immediate understanding of self and others in interaction. Cognitivist accounts downplay the role of interaction, while interactionist accounts overemphasize the role of sub-symbolical processes. What is central to perspective-taking and its development, but missing in either approach is symbolically mediated interaction. The social-relational perspective dating back to Lev Vygotsky and George Herbert Mead cuts across this schism and offers valuable insight into how perspective-taking develops through symbolic activity within a social context. Adopting the basic elements of the social-relational framework, the present work argues that understanding of self and others depends on the development of perspective-taking ability through symbolically mediated interaction. Perspectives are primarily differentiated, assumed, and coordinated within social interaction and subsequently through the individual, cognitive operation of perspective-taking. Symbolic mediation facilitates this transition from the social enaction of perspective-taking to mental construal and coordination of perspectives by transforming the structure of action. Higher order mental processes are not presupposed but constituted by social interaction through the child’s internalization of the perspectival structure of symbolic communication.

The rise of social robots : a review of the recent literature
Autorzy:
Campa, Riccardo
Opis:
In this article I explore the most recent literature on social robotics and argue that the field of robotics is evolving in a direction that will soon require a systematic collaboration between engineers and sociologists. After discussing several problems relating to social robotics, I emphasize that two key concepts in this research area are scenario and persona. These are already popular as design tools in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and an approach based on them is now being adopted in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). As robots become more and more sophisticated, engineers will need the help of trained sociologists and psychologists in order to create personas and scenarios and to " teach " humanoids how to behave in various circumstances.

Opis:
This article explores the potential of the focus group to generate analyzable social interaction. We investigate the ways in which group interaction may lead to new insights using examples from a 2011 study on transformation at a South African university campus. Certain aspects of sociable interaction, such as communicative interaction, power and agency, conflict, as well as exchange are touched upon and their roles in the intersubjective construction of reality are emphasized. We also look at the role of the facilitator in setting up a successful focus group session and the ways in which a naturalistic interactional setting may compensate for the relative unnatural nature of the group situation. Our argument is for the realization of the potential of the focus group as a qualitative method of data collection that is inherently geared towards generating understanding of contested issues, as it allows for an exciting positioning of the researcher between that of interviewer and participant observer, readily able to experience interactional exchange first hand while subtly directing the group conversation into areas of special interest. We believe that the unique epistemological possibilities of the focus group merit a re-engagement with the method by any social scientist interested in the dynamics underlying the social construction of reality, as it offers a window into the ways in which unfolding reality is intersubjectively contested, debated, and finally agreed upon.

Effects of synchronized and asynchronized e-feedback interactions on academic writing, achievement motivation and critical thinking

Opis:
We conducted a comparative study to evaluate the efficacy of synchronous and asynchronous interaction modes when providing feedback for improving academic writing, achievement motivation and critical thinking. The participants undertook an academic writing task, and were given feedback by a mentor using one of three interaction modes: asynchronous, synchronous e-feedback, and face to face. Data was collected from the participants via an assessment rubric applied to their writing after each stage of interaction, along with pretest and posttest questionnaires, and a semi-structured interview at the end. We found that synchronous feedback is more effective in increasing the quality of academic writing and achievement motivation, but for critical thinking we did not find any significant difference. We suggest that a strategy combining the advantages of each mode of interaction, considering the writers’ experience, may be the most effective way to promote academic writing, achievement motivation and critical thinking.

Opis:
Conflict, quarrel, dissens – these terms are often used synonymously in the specialist literature. They are associated with chaotic activities of the participants of interaction and are regarded as a factor which disrupts communication among them. However, it needs to be taken into account that the dissolution of conflict is one of the aims of the interaction participants and achieving that necessitates following a particular path. The purpose of the present paper is, thus, presenting the methodological framework for analysis of the structure of dissens as a pattern of activity in a particular communicative model. The discussion is based on the theory of sequentiality of dissens activities (see Gruber 1993, 1996), which proves their integrity and purposeful character.

Opis:
The close connection between content and relation in interactions (see Watzlawick/ Beavin/ Jackson 1974) invites the question of the matter-of-factness in political debates in the media. Politicians tackle controversial issues. Therefore, they are expected to present and maintain their opinions and in this way set the tone of a debate. How long is the tone kept at the content level? Do the maneuvers on the relation level (Schulz von Thun 1194) make a debate chaotic? The aim of the article is to analyze verbal and nonverbal tactics of the participants of a political debate that influence the level of interaction.

Opis:
Nanomaterials are very important in the field of packaging of food, medicines and dietary supplements. Modern packagings often contain nanoparticles that provide them new feature - nanoparticles are used to activate mainly the packaging inner surface. Carbon occurs in several allotropic forms, such as diamond, graphite (including nanotubes and fullerenes), carbides, and nanocrystalline diamond which is produced in a process of radio frequency plasma activated chemical vapor deposition (RF PA CVD). Variety of allotropic forms of carbon results in different chemical and biological interactions between carbon nanoparticles and the polymer matrix material. Carbon nanopraticles can be used to activate the inner surface of packagings. There is a growing demand for food free of harmful chemicals such as chloramphenicol or toxic food colorings (metanil yellow, auramine, orange II or red aura). The use of nanotechnology in the food packaging sector opens up new possibilities for creating sensors to detect certain harmful analytes. These sensors are easy and quick to use. The basis of their actions is to understand the interactions between nanoparticles and chemicals. Nanoparticles can be utilized to create intelligent high performance packaging materials for contact with food, drugs and biologically active molecules, which will be safe for health of the consumers.
