Opis:
The main contradictions, between hypotheses posed by physical anthropologists or geneticists, and the hypotheses put forward by archaeologists or historians, regarding the origin and spread of the Slavs, concerned and still concern the following: (a) the state and biological dynamics of Slavic populations (the capacity for population expansion) , (b) diversity and biological similarity of various groups living in Central Europe at the end of antiquity and in the early Middle Ages, (c) migration movements and their intensity, (d) directions of migration and their importance in the formation of Slavic “ethnos”. On the basis of the results of anthropological research, it can be concluded that: (a) both in the late antiquity period and in the early Middle Ages, the regional diversity of the populations inhabiting the Odra and Vistula basins was maintained, (b) there was a geographical gradient in the variability of morphological features of the skull from west to east of Europe, (c) populations belonging to the Germanic population and populations living in Scandinavia in the Middle Ages clearly differed in terms of morphological features of the skeleton from the population of Western Slavs inhabiting the Odra and Vistula basin. On the other hand, the emergence of a clear geographical gradient in the variability of morphological features of the skeleton, in late antiquity and in the Middle Ages, in Central Europe, allows to conclude that there were no intense migratory movements and the population exchange between late antiquity and the early Middle (d) results of the skeletal morphological features and state and biological dynamics of the population from the Roman period and the Middle Ages indicate a similar level of adaptation of these groups of people to living conditions. This result does not confirm the thesis put forward by some archaeologists and historians that the cultural system of the Slavs was characterized by poverty and a low level of material culture.

Opis:
Old Believers are a religious minority living in the north-eastern part of Poland. Since its appearance in the territory of Poland, it has aroused enormous interest due to its diversity. Old Believers in Poland are one of the most detailed and most widely described religious groups in Poland. Among these studies, linguistic studies clearly prevail, but they take into account the historical and cultural context of the emergence and internal development of the community. The aim of this text is to characterize the current research as well as to formulate postulates setting the direction for future research. The first one is dealing with the internal dynamics and variability of the group, the second one shows the need to take into account new research methods allowing for constant updating of the state of knowledge. The third one is about the abolition of the opposition researcher-subject, objective-subjective and making research a space of dialogue, which is associated with a significant change the current paradigm based on the significant status of the researcher-theoretician. The research postulates formulated in this way can also be referred to studies other than Old Believers of religious groups in Poland.

The article describes one of strategies of conducting and presenting interdisciplinary research based on catachresis (κατάχρησις, abusio). Catachresis understood as a figure of speech and as a model of worldview displays a potential in overcoming traditional methods of academic research practice. In the article, the thesis is elaborated and substantiated through an analysis of critical writings by two researchers: Michel Foucault and Donna Haraway.

Mediation as a category of humanisticoriented pedagogy
Autorzy:

Opis:
This paper analyzes the category of mediation from the point of view of humanisticoriented pedagogy. Mediation is discussed first in its presumably most popular context, that is, in the context of legal procedures, where Polish law is taken as an illustrative material. Against this background, the main functions and principles of legal concept of mediation are presented. Further investigations are devoted to the characterization of humanistic-oriented pedagogy, with emphasis on the main categories of this type of pedagogical inquiry. The very notion of category is also focused on. Finally, the research question concerning the understanding of mediation as a category of humanistic-oriented pedagogy is discussed. It is argued that certain important values underlying the legal concept of mediation are present in the research in pedagogy, but in the latter context, the category of mediation adopts a much broader meaning, for its elements are present in every stage of human development.

Opis:
It was during Witold Hensel’s studies at the University of Poznań and the first years of his working at the Poznań University right before the Second World War when his interests and the main trends of his scientific career were crystallized. It was only just when the medieval archaeology in Poland, as the result of some spectacular discoveries in the main centres of the first Piasts’ State, namely in Gniezno and Poznań, was developing. At the same time in the Poznań Centre an interdisciplinary cooperation between humanities (ethnography and history) and natural sciences started. Comparative studies were also widely carried, supported by intensive international contacts. Witold Hensel, a young archaeologist at that time, was an active participant of them. As the sum of all that, it was nobody else but Witold Hensel who in 1946, not long after the WWII was over, formulated a new research project, met with enthusiasm by other scientists, to celebrate the first millennium of the rise of the Polish State, which was soon to come. It was the first so widely planned interdisciplinary project in humanities (and it is worth mentioning that palaeobilogists were also involved) and the obtained results were immense. For the Polish medieval archaeology it was the time of a huge increase in terms of appearance and development of institutions and methodology as well as in number of scientists interested in the subject. It all led to some sort of “outflow” of the members of the Polish archaeological school to the West-European countries (Italy, France and further on also to some others) what, to a large extent, gave the basis for some studies carried on in the field in those areas. The other Witold Hensel’s research trends, later on followed by a huge number of his students, were concerned with settlement studies based on detailed inventarisation and publication of archaeological sources, as well as comparative studies carried out on a large scale. The latter were fulfilled by Witold Hensel not only in his scientific publications (especially some editions of “Słowiańszczyzna wczesnośredniowieczna” (Early medieval Slav lands). He also created and edited a new interdisciplinary periodical titled “Slavia Antiqua”, which was his attempt to continue ideas formulated by specialists of different Slavic disciplines already before the war. Above all however, there was his active participation in foundation of the International Union of Slavic Archaeology. The Union, by its congresses and symposia as well as publications, positively influenced studies in medieval archaeology in general.

Opis:
Health sciences is a fairly young discipline which deals with the multi-layered analysis of such elements as health care, health system, health education. Health sciences undertake also a detailed analysis of the process of minimising the consequences of an illness while taking into account the technical and service-related background. A distinctive feature of health sciences is the fact that they integrate several disciplines from various fields of sciences such as medicine, biology, humanities, social sciences, economics, law and technical sciences etc. Health sciences have an open and dynamic network of scientific links and associations. This feature allows one to undertake interdisciplinary research within the field of social sciences. Creating health science departments at the public medical universities in Poland has resulted in heightening and diversifying their research and educational potential. By opening health sciences’ departments most of the medical schools managed to obtain an official status of a university. However in the field of health sciences the idea of universitas is transformed into the idea of diversitas – that is – an epistemic and methodological diversification. The idea of diversitas that characterises health sciences means a certain deconstruction of the monolith stability of the medical and pharmaceutical sciences. In this context it is interesting to define the university status of health sciences and their place in the structures of medical universities.

Opis:
The purpose of the article is to analyze the idea of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theology and sociology. This is one of the methodological proposals for research projects carried out under pastoral theology. Interdisciplinarity is understood as combining research methods for the cooperation of scientists from both disciplines in the process of planning, implementing and interpreting the results of empirical research. It is inspired by a problem identified in pastoral theology that requires exploration. The presentation consists of three parts. The first is devoted to the location of empirical research within pastoral theology. The second concerns the assumptions and significance of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theologians and sociologists. In the final part, the areas of interdisciplinary cooperation among the research teams are pointed out. The potential of qualitative research as a space for cooperation among representatives of both sciences and as an important source of knowledge from the viewpoint of pastoral theology is shown. The comparative and synthetic method was used. The analysis shows that interdisciplinary research in the field of pastoral theology has great potential related to the acquisition and interpretation of multi-faceted empirical data and the designation of new research fields, which will significantly enrich the theological analysis process as well as the presentation and application of pastoral models.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present a review of a book edited by Adam Komisarof and Zhu Hua entitled Crossing Boundaries and Weaving Intercultural Work, Life, and Scholarship in Globalizing Universities which is a collection of articles from various research disciplines and approaches to the field of intercultural studies such as cross-cultural and acculturation psychology, communication, sociology, cultural anthropology, applied linguistics, language teaching, and multilingualism studies. The editors point out that auto-ethnography is the method employed for the purposes of the volume, as it is both researcher- and reader-friendly and allows the connection of personal experiences to broader socio-cultural contexts. As the editors promise, the book provides the reader with a variety of perspectives on intercultural communication and gives an overview of how intercultural academics combine their work, life, and scholarship, and how they juggle between various perspectives, cultures, and languages.
