Opis:
The author of the article discusses in a chronological order the literature on Iceland written in Polish starting from the seventeenth-century account of the journey to the island by Daniel Vetter. Most attention is devoted to the accounts created in the second half of the twentieth (reports by Lucjan Wolanowski and Polish sailors) and at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Recent publications are largely based on blog experiences. In quantitative as well as qualitative terms, we observe the perspective of changing the geographical and cultural imagination of Polish literature at the beginning of the 21st century: within the North-South axis one can notice the recently emerging diagonal axis linking Poland with Iceland. It is worth examining this issue in more detail in a while.

Opis:
The article is a case study of the development of cavernous weathering forms (alveoli and tafoni) on a sea cliff near Keflavik on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland. The majority of forms are found on vertical or inclined rock faces and cluster around the uppermost edge of the cliff. Single hollows gradually evolve due to back wearing of their sidewalls into complex caverns, until finally the whole outermost layer of basalt is removed. Particular attention is paid to mineralogical changes of basalts due to chemical and salt weathering. Chemical decomposition of feldspars, pyroxenes and olivines followed by precipitation of iron on and within the weathering rind, the presence of micro- and macro-pores such as gas bubbles and delivery of marine salts are proposed to be the key factors influencing cavern development.

Daleka wyprawa po szczęście - doświadczenia migracyjne Polaków na Islandii
A Quest for Happiness. Migratory Experience of Poles in Iceland
Autorzy:
Rycak, Marta
Opis:
Poles make up the largest national minority in Iceland (out of about 320 thousand inhabitants, about 10 thousand are of Polish origin), it is an immigration young by history (the community has been developing since the first decade of this century) and age (most individuals fall into the group of 20-39 years old). Because of extreme differences of natural conditions and island's isolation from other lands, immigration to Iceland is of a special kind. Besides typical changes related to improvement of material living conditions, lives of immigrants have changed in regard to inhabiting one of the least populated and most happy countries of the world. The dissertation tries to depict migratory experience of Poles in Iceland, based on nine in-depth interviews.
Oprócz typowych zmian związanych z polepszeniem materialnych warunków bytowych, w życiu migrantów zaszły zmiany związane z mieszkaniem w jednym z najsłabiej zaludnionych i najszczęśliwszych krajów na świecie. W oparciu o materiał badawczy (wywiady pogłębione z dziewięcioma osobami) staram się przedstawić doświadczenia migracyjne Polaków mieszkających na wyspie.

Opis:
The article in a general way presents the shaping of the process of migration from Poland to Iceland and the determinants and contributing factors of this pro-cess. It is noted that Polish community in Iceland is the youngest Polish community in Scandinavia and one of the youngest Polish community in the world. Although the beginnings of Polish settlement on the island dates back to the interwar period, a more numerous Polish diaspora in Iceland was formed only in the 90s of the twen-tieth century, and its current face is mostly the result of the influx of Polish immi-grants to this country, which took place after 2006, as a effect of the opening of the Icelandic labor market for Polish workers. It is estimated that currently in Iceland lives around nine thousand Poles.

A 150-year debate over surnames vs. patronymics in Iceland
Autorzy:
Willson, Kendra
Opis:
Iceland stands out in today’s Europe due to the fact that most Icelanders use patronymics rather than surnames. However, a small percentage of Icelanders do have surnames inherited in a fixed form. The first surnames were adopted in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, increasing numbers of Icelanders were taking up surnames, often Danicized or Latinized versions of Icelandic patronymics or place names. The practice became controversial with the rise of the independence movement, which was closely connected to linguistic purism. The use of surnames in Iceland has been debated since the 19th century. Whereas the other Nordic countries introduced legislation requiring citizens to have surnames, Iceland went in the opposite direction, forbidding new surnames starting in 1925. However, the surnames that were already in use were allowed to remain in circulation. This created an inequality which has haunted Icelandic name law discourse since. Having a surname in Iceland has often been linked with social prestige, and surnames have been perceived as a limited good. Since the 1990s, the fraction of Icelanders with surnames has increased through immigration and some liberalizations in the rules regarding the inheritance of existing Icelandic surnames. In the name of gender equity, surnames can be inherited along any line, not only patrilineal. Since 1996, immigrants seeking Icelandic citizenship are no longer required to change their names, and their children can inherit their surnames. The category of millinöfn (middle name), surname-like names that are not inflected for gender, was introduced in the 1996 law; some Icelanders with millinöfn use them as surnames in daily life even if they officially have patronymics. Despite the expansion in eligibility to take surnames, the basic principle that no new Icelandic surnames are allowed remains in the law and remains a point of contention. Many of the same themes—individual freedom vs. the preservation of cultural heritage, national vs. international orientation, gender equity—have recurred in the discourse over more than a century, reframed in the context of contemporary cultural values at any given time.
