Patronage in literature, translation and print : some remarks on 1809 edition of the "Dabestān-e mazāheb" published in print with the support of the East India Company

Dabestān-e mazāheb is an interesting example of a 17th century text on various faiths and creeds of the Indian subcontinent. The present case study looks at possible explanations for its popularity claimed for it in the editorial note found in the first printed edition (1809) while simultaneously analysing reasons behind selection of this particular text for a print publication in the light of patronage extended by the East India Company to translation and printing of selected Indian writings. The process in this case is well documented in the correspondence of British officials such as Sir William Jones, but as to the reasons for the printing even more may be deduced from the highly ornate Persian peritext appended at the end of the 1809 edition by the book’s editor, Nazar Ashraf. The note provides an interesting testimony to the evolving fusion of the long tradition of manuscript writing and the advancements in printing which the paper explores.

Opis:
At the turn of the 21st century India has embarked upon a new policy towards the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, with development policy as one of its major features. This resulted from the fact that socio-economic and developmental issues became crucial for India in the post-Cold War era. The leaders of these countries realized that in the face of the globalization of economic processes and the increased importance of inter-dependencies, economic reforms are essential. Despite significant differences between the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, they share the desire to overcome socioeconomic limitations and to achieve sustained economic development. Furthermore, the Chinese factor is a major determinant of cooperation between India and Sub-Saharan Africa. India and China compete with each other for access to raw energy materials in Africa, as well as in terms of political and economic interests in the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. India's relations with these countries also reflect a new policy and new approach to development issues, characterized by pragmatism, economization and the discarding of rhetoric and ideology, which are features of the new non-alignment.

The study of external perceptions provides insights into how the European Union (EU) is actually judged as an international actor, helps shape the EU’s identity and roles, and shows how outsiders’ expectations and perceptions impact upon the EU’s foreign policy performance. This article examines how the European Union is perceived by India – one of the ten strategic partners of the European Union. It examines India’s attitudes towards the European integration movement, Jawaharlal Nehru’s perceptions of the European Community and the changed perceptions of Europe in India’s foreign policy in the post-Cold War era. It discusses the perceptions of the Indian political, business and media elites of the European Union as an international actor. In conclusion, it discusses what needs to be done to overcome the perceptional differences.

The aim of this master thesis is to show social and linguistic influence of Portuguese on India via linguistic analysis of Portuguese loanwords in Hindi language. Work is divided into two main parts. First part refers to history of Portuguese India and its influence on Far East in particular India, the second part is a linguistic analysis of loanwords. The author of this thesis will attempt to explore social and linguistic Portuguese-Indian association.
Głównym celem niniejszej pracy jest ukazanie wpływu, jaki Portugalczycy wywarli na Indie poprzez analizę leksykalnych zapożyczeń portugalskich pojawiających się w języku hindi oraz przedstawienie zarysu historii kolonii portugalskich w Azji Południowej. W pierwszej części pracy omówione zostało tło historyczne, celem przedstawienia charakteru kontaktów portugalsko-indyjskich i określenia ram czasowych. Drugą częścią, praktyczną, jest opis językoznawczy zapożyczeń portugalskich, które pojawiły się w języku hindi.
