Opis:
In a pandemic situation, anxiety about work has added to anxiety about the perceived threat to health or life. Job insecurity is a stressor that causes deterioration of mental and physical health, but also leads to behaviors that have negative consequences for the organization. The anxiety related to fears about the future of work may be increased due to limited contacts with co-workers (remote work, forced downtime) and social isolation, while social support is one of the most important stress buffer factors. In this article, we present the results of research on the construction of a scale for measuring job uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Opis:
The phenomenon of ethnic and religious inequality has continued to be experienced in most societies of the world. In Nigeria, the problem seemed to have increased over the past years, thereby creating a complex matrix that produced negative effects. This has brought a lot of untold hardships and other social consequences upon the state. The present conflicts and violence that have destroyed a lot of lives and property in Nigeria is a product of social inequality. This has retarded growth and development of the state. To understand and provide possible solutions to this phenomenon, theoretical and empirical approaches were used to gather data needed for this work. Findings of the study revealed that groups are more loyal and sympathetic to their identity and interest rather than any state goal. This may be as a result of government and groups not playing their roles well. They sometimes use machinery of state to enhance themselves and their group interests. The paper concludes that politicians favor some ethnic and religious groups in their policy decisions, power sharing, distribution of resources and equity. This has brought inequality and dissatisfaction among groups and citizens. These and other external forces bring inequality which often results in crisis. Part of the solution is to evolve consensus building mechanism that will put in place a state ideology. There should be a framework upon which group interests and actions will be harmonized to meet collective good.

In just a few decades, with the arrival of immigrants from many different places, Spain has become a multi-ethnic society. Facing these increased streams has been a huge challenge to Spanish society. This article examines the evolution of feelings toward immigration in Spain (2000–2007) with data from a country-wide survey. The results show increasing hostility toward immigrants. The variables that contribute most to explaining this phenomenon are competition and threat, both individual (salaries, jobs or welfare resources) and group (national identity).

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of food insecurity among Lebanese University (Hadath Campus) students and examine its association with demographic characteristics, academic performance, body mass index (BMI), and household monthly income. Methods: A total of 755 participants that studied at Hadath Campus of Lebanese University were recruited for this study. The prevalence of food insecurity was assessed using a validated scale of 7 items: Arabic Family Food Security Scale (AFFSS). Findings:  Responses to the AFFSS indicated that 8.9% of students were food insecure, among which 7.5% and 1.4% were respectively moderately and severely food insecure.  Also, 91.1% were food secure. Food security status was significantly associated with age (p=0.001), family monthly allowance (p<0.001), weight (p=0.023), faculty (p=0.009) and BMI (p=0.04). Conclusion: The prevalence of food-insecure students was approximately 9% in the sample. Further studies are needed to measure food insecurity among Lebanese University students across the rest of the campuses in order to have enough evidence regarding the food insecurity level. Moreover, policies and programs must address food insecurity levels among students to ensure that all the resources are available for these students to succeed.

Over 40 years ago the French Research Committee on Violence, Crime and Delinquency published a document that contained current analyses on the occurrence of social problems and their determinants, as well as guidelines to reduce risks and reduce the sense of threat and insecurity in modern society. The document became the basis for the reflection on public debate on violence in international communities and psychological practice against violence in both interpersonal and wider social relations. The combination of the individual and the social perspective gives a chance to criticise and rethink the guidelines suggested by the Committee from the point of view of such issues as community responsibility, individual rights and the current state in psychological and social care against violence. Special attention was paid to ten recommendations.

Opis:
This study was carried out to estimate the extent of food security and its determinants among rural households in Nigeria. Data for this study was obtained from 180 rural households consisting of 1260 members through the use of a structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed with a descriptive technique and a less restrictive multinomial logistic regression model. The result found most rural households to be food insecure as they measure high on the food insecurity scale. Age, gender, marital status, access to credit, dependency ratio, household size, ownership of farmland and farming experience significantly influence food security categories. The study concluded that: female-headed married households were more food secure than male-headed households; an increase in age of household heads makes it more likely to be food secure, and so does access to credit facilities; conversely, an increase in family size and in the dependency ratio makes it less likely to be food secure. The study recommends that there should be provision and proper monitoring of credit facilities to small farmers in other to increase their scale of operation and improve their food security status. Also, adequate attention should be given to policy measures that address family planning in order to reduce the household size to a level the household heads can adequately cater for.

Opis:
BackgroundThe pandemic, as an event that is new and dangerous to the health and life of the population, has put employees at risk of losing their job and experiencing deteriorating working and employment conditions. In this situation, authors were particularly concerned with the extent to which job insecurity (both quantitative and qualitative) contributed to the deterioration of workers’ well-being.Material and MethodsThe study was carried out on 382 Polish employees in April and May 2020. The following research tools were used: the Job Insecurity in Pandemic Scale by Chirkowska-Smolak and Czumak and the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21) by Levibond and Levibond.ResultsThe quantitative and qualitative job insecurity were significant predictors of depression and stress, but they did not explain anxiety symptoms. The scope of the explained variance of these negative emotional states by concerns related to work and employment was not large (from 11% to 17.6%). The moderating role of perceived employability was confirmed only in the case of the relationship between qualitative job insecurity and depression, as well as quantitative job insecurity and stress. However, the increase in the explained variance was very small.ConclusionsUncertainty related to the maintenance of employment and concerns about the deterioration of working conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on emotional disturbances of employees, but they only explained some of the variance of depression and stress and did not affect the perceived level of anxiety. The smaller role of economic stress in the emergence of negative emotional states could be associated with the occurrence of much more serious threats to the health and life of the population in this period. The very low level of unemployment in Poland, which remained at a similar level throughout the pandemic despite the catastrophic forecasts of economists, could also have played an important role.

According to a report by the International Labour Organization1 , growth of work insecurity has become a global trend in the last decades. Many people suffer from insecure and unpredictable working conditions. It was estimated in 2019 that 3.3 billion people worked without a contract2 . Together with increasing difficulties to find a job and insufficient social protection, these issues have become one of the main sources of experienced insecurity. In consequence, the International Trade Union Confederation3 have sounded the alarm, pointing out how bad conditions of work are all over the world and even the World Bank Group4 appeals to the politicians for more worker protection.

Opis:
Throughout the world, violence, delinquency and fear undermine the basic right of individuals to live in peace and fully benefit from the healthy and sustainable commu-nity. More worrisome is the seemingly uncontrollable proliferations of small and light weapons which remained one of the major challenges for security and sustainable development in Nigeria. It is against this backdrop that this study examines the threats that small arms and light weapons proliferation portends on the Nigerian security and sustainable development. They study relied on secondary data and utilizes the content analysis for interpretation of data. This study is anchored on the state failure theory to underscore situations that warrant recourse to small arms and light weapons. The study concludes that the debilitating economy, failure of the state to provide the basic necessities of life, corruption, high rate of youth unemployment and sluggishness among the state’s instrument of force viz: the Army, police etc., are some of the major factors that serve as challenges to meaningful efforts and policies at combating the menace in the country. This study therefore recommends among others that the gov-ernment in all levels should embark on poverty alleviation programs and provide em-ployment opportunities to unemployed youths. This will discourage youths from join-ing ethnic militias and other militant groups that pose threats to peace and security in Nigeria.

Opis:
The conventional linear programming based transportation model in the previous studies was examined and found to be deficient in practice. Modified transportation model has been developed to include some predetermined salient factors such as road safety and security. In the real sense these factors are accidental and they can occur without prior notice. Besides, weather change is also critical to transportation insecurity. In this paper a new transportation scheme’s model was deve- loped to take into consideration the incidental occurence nature of the insecurity factors as applicable elsewhere. The weighted loss cost function due to the insecurity factors on roads was formulated using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and its outcome was integrated into the conventional transportation model. The cost savings from three models namely conventional, modified-conventional, and the current (re-modified) were compared using the petrol’s transportation schedule of the Nigerian petroleum industry. The results showed that the re-modified transportation model was not in good agreement with the other two in term of flexibility. The findings showed that the cost price of the item has a wide margin depending on the incidence and the weight of insecurity.
