Opis:
This paper looks at three possible actors in the ELT classroom: learners, non-native English speaking teachers (NNEST) and native English speaking teachers (NEST). Each particular group has a need to acquire the skill of intercultural competence. For the learners, it is a necessary element alongside their knowledge of the language to be effective in real-life intercultural communications. For the teachers, it is to be sensitive to their learners from other cultures, to have a neutral bias to whichever of the L1 or L2 cultures is not their own, and also to enable incorporation of intercultural content effectively into the English lesson. The paper examines the obstacles to achieving Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) encountered by each group. Some are unique to that group, such as the comparative disparity of the influence of the globally dominant culture of the NEST, and some are common among two or all three, for example, culture shock whilst abroad. By understanding these obstacles, it is possible to make suggestions on how to overcome them in each particular group. Some examples of recommendations are for ICC building skills to be included in teacher training courses as well as foreign exchange trips for both learners and teacher trainees. Finally, some observations are made as to how L1 and intercultural aspects can be included in the lessons themselves.

Opis:
My point of departure for this paper is that translation, so long neglected in foreign language teaching, can not only improve students’ linguistic competences in both a foreign language and their mother tongue, but also their awareness of cultural and intercultural elements. It is a widespread popular assumption, among those not involved in language teaching, that linguistic competences are the key to learning a language and to communicating in a foreign language; consequently, they assume that translation ought to play a major role in the study of a foreign language. Indeed, late 20th century theories of language teaching, apart from the grammar-translation method, have largely ignored or criticized the role of translation. I will focus on a translation course I taught to a class of a year three Italian undergraduate students studying foreign languages, and discuss the advantages of using translation to improve students’ linguistic competences, in their mother tongue and in the foreign language, and to develop their intercultural communicative competences and their cultural (Bassnett, 2002, 2007) and intercultural awareness (Kramsch, 1993, 1998). The translated text was taken from The Simpsons, season 21, episode 16.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of tandem classrooms in promoting intercultural communicative competence by comparing the competence of students before and after participation in tandem classes. This research is based on the descriptive statistics from a survey administered at a university in South Korea. The survey was conducted in 2016 during the second semester, and it used students who participated in tandem classrooms by employing a questionnaire to measure the effectiveness of the tandem classrooms in relation to intercultural communicative competence and the students’ perception of their own competence after completing the tandem classes. The result of the research shows that unlike the initial expectations, there is no meaningful sign that the surveyed students have developed intercultural communicative competence, which means that tandem classrooms did not actively help students improve this competence. In this study, an in-depth interview with students was also conducted in 2019 to find out why such a result occurred. Although tandem classrooms would be highly valuable as a language learning method, the approach may require redesigning and reimplementation in great detail to become a method for developing intercultural communicative competence. Therefore, this study highlights the underlying need for a revised curriculum for students attending tandem classrooms.

In the present article we revise the concepts of culture and intercultural competence, include the five dimensions of the concept of culture proposed by Moran (2001) –products, practices, communities, persons, and perspectives- in Byram’s (1991) model, and apply the new model in the design of a class of Spanish as a foreign language. In the class described in this article we attempt to go beyond the concept of culture as mere content, and work with the concept of intercultural competence as social and cultural practices.

Elements of the intercultural approach in the latest course books for teaching Polish as a foreign language : analysis
Autorzy:

Opis:
Interculturality is one of the paradigms of modern foreign language teaching. Intercultural teaching is also in the center of attention in Polish glottodidactics. The objective of this article is to present the results of an analysis of the most recent course books for teaching Polish as a foreign language in the context of included elements of the intercultural approach. For the purpose of the article ten course books issued after 2010 have been analyzed and three of them - those with the highest potential to integrate language and (inter)cultural content - have been described in detail. Exercises/tasks including any type of references to the broadly understood term "culture" have been chosen as the analysis units. As part of the analysis it has been investigated, which components of Michael Byram’s intercultural communicative competence can be developed with those exercises/tasks, but also if there are potential intercultural teaching areas, i.e. perception training, developing strategy of appropriate interpretation, developing the ability to compare cultures, or the ability to communicate in intercultural situations.

Investigation of the need for teaching Intercultural Communicative Competence in Polish secondary education. Students' and teachers' attitudes
Badanie potrzeby nauczania międzykulturowej kompetencji komunikacyjnej w szkołach średnich w Polsce. Nastawienie uczniów oraz nauczycieli.
Autorzy:

Opis:
English as an international language along with the economic and technological development has become an essential tool in communication with people around the world, therefore with people from different cultures. Language proficiency is not enough to effectively communicate with those people. Therefore, there is a need to acquire intercultural communicative competence (ICC), which should be developed by teachers during students’ school education. In the research teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards intercultural communicative competence were investigated. It was also examined to what extent ICC is referred to in teachers’ and students’ aims of teaching and learning English. The study revealed that both students and teachers believe that the ability to communicate with people from different cultures is very important in today’s world. Teachers and students know that they will need to communicate with people from different cultures in their education, professional career and everyday life. However, it turns out that teachers lack preparation to teach intercultural communicative competence. The point was also made about the number of lessons per week, which according to teachers is too small to put enough focus on intercultural aspects.
W badaniu zbadano nastawienie uczniów i nauczycieli do nauczania komunikacyjnej kompetencji interkulturowej.

(Inter)cultural components in EFL teaching : evidence from pre-service teachers’ projects
Autorzy:
Kusiak-Pisowacka, Monika
Opis:
Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) is an object of recent studies in the areas of applied linguistics, education and teacher training, those discussing theoretical underpinnings of the intercultural approach and those focusing on classroom implications. In Poland, fostering FL learners’ ICC has become an ambitious goal of both FL education and FL teacher training. The paper discusses the results of the study which examined the empirical projects produced by pre-service FL teachers, participants of EFL training organized within a university setting. The topics of all the projects revolve around introducing intercultural elements in EFL teaching. The analysis examined the aims of the students’ projects, the methodology applied and the theoretical perspectives that underlined the studies. The findings allowed the author of the paper to construct the profile of a FL teacher who would be prepared to promote the principles of the intercultural approach

Opis:
The present paper aims to outline a study devoted to the implementation of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) into primary online classroom practice. The selected aspects of Anglophone cultural content were chosen to complement the students’ cultural issues covered by the core curriculum. The cultural elements were incorporated into the background of EFL materials focusing on teaching vocabulary by means of a range of activities suitable for primary school learners (42 second graders). The conclusions to be presented will provide the researchers' reflections on the implementation of and the students’ responses to the lessons.
