Opis:: The aim of the paper is to present and analyze the changes of competitive position of Finland, in the light of a few main rankings of international competitiveness and innovation of national economies. The paper uses the terms of competitive position and competitive ability, to discuss both the state of Finnish competitiveness, and the perspectives of its improvement. The chosen rankings are The Global Competitiveness Report published annually by World Economic Forum (WEF), The World Competitiveness Yearbook made by analytics from International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, and Innovation Union Scorecard, made under the auspices of the European Commission (EC). The three rankings are complementary, because they treat the issue of competitiveness from a diffent point of view. In the artice there was used OECD report Economic Surveys: Finland 2014, to compare the assessments and recommendations for Finland with the previously desribed issue of competitiveness (following the WEF methodology) and the changes of competitive position of Finnish economy in the years 2009-2014. The WEF ranking metho-lodogy, based on 12 pillars of competitiveness, is compared to economic recommendations of OECD for Finland, to indicate recommendations that are the most important for the improvements of the Finnish competitive ability. The article ends with the following conlusions: in the years 2009-2014 Finland sustained a high competitive position, the main engine of Finnish competitiveness is innovation, Poland should learn from the Finnish example how to improve international competitveness by developing economy based on knowledge and innovation.

Opis:: This paper analyses the impact of international competitiveness on economic development, based on the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) and GDP/capita of 125 countries during the period 2007-2010. The results reveal two phases of the evolution of competitiveness. When GCI < 4.5 (on 1-7 scale), any improvement of a country’s competitiveness affects current development more than future development. When a country’s GCI rises above 4.5, further improvements of competitiveness will affect future development more than current development. The 4.5 competitiveness threshold is remarkably stable throughout analyzed period.

Opis:: Głównym celem pracy jest weryfikacja hipotezy o występowaniu wysokiego zróżnicowanego poziomu konkurencyjności wybranych gospodarek europejskich. Źródłem danych do weryfikacji postawionej hipotezy są wskaźniki publikowane przez Bank Światowy, Urząd Statystyczny UE, Organizacje Współpracy Gospodarczej i Rozwoju, Europejki oraz Amerykański Urząd Patentowy. Oceny międzynarodowej konkurencyjności dokonano przy wykorzystaniu mapy czynników kształtujących konkurencyjność międzynarodową oraz wskaźnika ujawnionych przewag komparatywnych (Balassy). Do analizy wybrano gospodarki Polski, Czech, Irlandii, Hiszpanii oraz Włoch. Przeprowadzona analiza prowadzi do wyprowadzenia ogólnego wniosku o zróżnicowanej sile oddziaływania poszczególnych modelowych grup czynników konkurencyjności na poziom konkurencyjności gospodarek krajowych w zależności od poziomu ich rozwoju.
The main purpose of this research was to verify the hypothesis about high level of competitiveness diversity of selected European economies. The source of data to verify hypothesis was indicators published by World Bank, Statistical Office of the European Community, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, European Patent Office and United States Patent and Trademark Office's. Assessment of international competitiveness was made by using the map of factors influencing of international competitiveness and Revealed Comparative Advantage (Balassy).Polish, Czech Republic, Ireland, Spain and Italy economy were selected to analysis. The analysis leads to conclusions about differentiated power of impact competitiveness factors, on level of competitiveness national economy depending on their levels of development

Wieloletnie badania dały asumpt do opracowania autorskiej propozycji podejścia do pomiaru poziomu konkurencyjności międzynarodowej kraju. Podstawowym celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza porównawcza metodologii pomiaru poziomu konkurencyjności międzynarodowej, stosowanej przez WEF z proponowanym podejściem przez autorkę.
The paper presents conclusions from a critical analysis of the World Economic Forum's (WEF) meth-odology of measuring the Global Competitiveness Index, which has been used since 2019. The stud-ies carried out by the authors also allowed the falsification of the WEF's hypothesis that international competitiveness determines an economy's productivity level. Many years of research have given rise to developing a proposal for measuring countries' international competitiveness.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to study and compare the competitiveness of the new EU member states in international trade in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). The first part of the paper presents a definition of KIBS trade, indicators to measure competitiveness in international service trade, and a short review of research in this field. The second part of the study is empirical. First the author carries out an overall analysis of transactions on KIBS trade in the countries involved. Then the competitiveness of the new EU member states in KIBS export is studied (in total KIBS and in each category of KIBS). International competitiveness is measured by export performance, trade balance and the RCA index. The author compares the competitiveness in KIBS exports between the analyzed countries, and tries to answer the question whether it could have been positively affected by their accession to the EU. The paper uses the WTO database. The analyzed period covers the years 2000–2013, because data on particular categories of ‘Other business services’ have been available only since 2000. The analysis refers to the 12 countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007.

Opis:: This article looks at the problem of measuring economic competitiveness of countries. It begins with describing various definitions of this phenomenon which are sometimes quite vague and close to tautology. The indicators of competitiveness which are most commonly used lack theoretical background, while the results depend on arbitrary choice of variables used for their construction. The author makes a proposal of an alternative way of measuring the competitiveness which is simple and well rooted in the theory. However, given the complexity of the problem, the proposed measurement does not solve all the problems. Its results allow for making the assessment of the development model of Poland and, in particular, formulating a hypothesis that Poland is underperforming in the field of the competitiveness given its level of economic and institutional development.

Opis:: A study was carried out to determine the level of competitiveness of the furniture industry in selected EU countries, using result-oriented indicators. The analysis of international competitiveness covered individual product groups, which allowed investigation of the situation of not only the entire furniture industry, but also its particular branches. The research showed that Poland and Italy have achieved the highest comparative advantages in trade in furniture, and in the case of the Polish furniture industry, positive development trends were observed. Germany – the largest furniture exporter in the EU – demonstrated a much lower level of competitiveness, and the significant value of furniture industry products imported to that country results in a growing foreign trade deficit. Unfavourable values of the competitiveness indicators and generally negative tendencies during the analysed period were obtained for almost all of the distinguished groups of furniture in the case of the UK, which was a net importer in this area.

Opis:: Research background: Food industry is of key importance to each economy due to its role in ensuring food security, balancing the labour market, as well as contributing to the economic growth and international trade. With a limited increase in demand for food in many highly developed countries, further growth in this sector of the economy will largely depend on the ability to successfully distribute manufactured goods in international markets and cope with competitive pressure from other entities. Purpose of the article: Therefore, the study attempts to assess the determinants of international competitiveness of the food industry worldwide measured by the trade balance. Methods: The research was based on data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Data Center (UNCTADStat) and the World Input-Output Database (WIOD). The time frame for the analyses was determined by the availability of internationally comparable data and thus covered the period of 2000?2014. The empirical analysis was performed with the use of panel models, while international competitiveness was measured by trade balance (net export). Findings & value added: It was proved that increasing trade openness and relative demand, as well as decreasing relative unit labour costs have a positive impact on international competitiveness of the food industry worldwide. However, the nature of the relationship between relative labour productivity and trade balance appears to be ambiguous. A stronger impact of the examined factors on net exports in the long-run rather than the short-run was also evidenced. The novelty of our analysis is that we consider trade balance determinants of the food industry worldwide using panel models, whereas most of the existing studies focus either on one or a narrow group of countries.

Opis:: Celem artykułu jest prezentacja wyników metaanalizy prac naukowych z zakresu międzynarodowej konkurencyjności, opublikowanych w ciągu ostatnich siedemdziesięciu lat w bazach ISI Web of Science oraz EconLit. W analizie wykorzystane zostały podstawowe metody bibliometryczne przy wsparciu oprogramowania HistCite. Przeprowadzona analiza umożliwiła ocenę w czasie rozwoju badań nad międzynarodową konkurencyjnością oraz identyfikację głównych autorów i publikacji mających kluczowe znaczenie dla tego obszaru badań. Zidentyfikowana różnorodność podejść do definiowania i podnoszenia międzynarodowej konkurencyjności gospodarki/sektora/przedsiębiorstwa potwierdza tezę o braku spójnych ram teoretycznych umożliwiających jednoznaczną odpowiedź, czym naprawdę jest międzynarodowa konkurencyjność.
This paper has as main objectives to consolidate the state of the art of academic research of international competitiveness, based on bibliometric study of literature published over the past 40 years. Citation data was collected from ISI WEB of Science Website from Thompson's Scientific Data and analyzed using the HistCite and CitNetExpolrer software. A new method of analyzing literature related to international competitiveness may help improve one's understanding of complex research topic and may help to suggest new research directions or alternative research priorities. The results are discussed under following perspectives: general results, chronological distributions, authors, articles and cited references relevance. The analysis shows the lack of a coherent theoretical framework, which makes it impossible to clearly answer to the question what international competitiveness is.
