Opis:
This study focuses on the creativity of Internet memes used in advertising campaigns. A random selection of memes is analysed. It is argued that the creation of Internet memes involves amusing juxtaposition of phrases and pictures. Advertisers have taken advantage of this Internet phenomenon. They use familiar ideas and background knowledge in order to make new and surprising combinations of Internet memes. Advertisers’ aim is to play creatively with memetic elements. To conclude, being able to skilfully and cleverly alter the original meme and create the humourous effect are the main goals of marketers.

FenoMEM - characteristics of Internet memes
FenoMEM, czyli charakterystyka internetowych memów
Autorzy:
Litman, Magdalena
Opis:
The work includes the characteristics of Internet memes or viral phenomena, based on memetics as a science. In the work I carry out research - case studies - proving that Internet memes meet the definition of memes at science. I'm showing that they are slightly different from other viral phenomenom - the so-called virals. I'm explaining the origins of memes, and the examples of Polish "online yard" showing what memes really are, and how they are created. I'm proving the idea, that memes are intertextual means of communication between Internet users. As an example I present"typically Polish" memes, their intertextuality and the importance of memes in the broader context of Polish culture. I'm categorizing memes at their own, proprietary concept - I divide them into groups I was able to extract from the memeplex available on the Web. I'm showing mechanisms that guides the Internet users in the selection of memes, and how a memplexes are created (which are a compilation of different interpretations of the same meme). In this work, I'm drawing attention to the fact of using such phenomena for marketing purposes, and showing the reaction of Internet users. I'm finding the connection between what I see empirically, and what the theory says about memetics. The study is the first of its kind - includes not only the characteristics, but also in-depth analysis of the various memes - their intertextuality and position in the culture. It is very interesting topic that deals with the ways of communication in a group of seemingly random, but growing in strength, due to the 'expansion' of the Internet in all areas of life.

Opis:
The article focuses on the multisemiotic functioning of Internet memes in communication through the web, focused, among other things, on a humorous effect. The role of the image, first of all, in the creation of the Internet meme and also in its re-application in a multicultural and interlingual environment seems fundamental. This iconic element is part of the large and varied number of relationships with other types of signs (linguistic, cultural, discursive). It seems that the question of the typological diversity of image-text relations (in the very broad sense of it) can be addressed from a variety of perspectives that involve not only a philosophy of translation, but also an approach to humorous communication on the Internet. The article aims to analyse the nature of the relationship that unites an iconic element with a linguistic element that constitutes the essence of the message conveyed by internet memes.

Opis:
Our study deals with relatively short statements embedded in semiotically complex digital messages, both pictorial and verbal, which are created and exchanged by Internet users thanks to on-line generators. These messages are called internet memes (IM). We treat them as a new kind of on-line speech (determined by the so-called participatory web 2.0 digital medium), semiotically heterogeneous (both graphic and verbal in nature), putting into circulation comments on events and especially on the political word (slogans, catchphrases, slip of the tongue). These IM are subject to various verbo-graphic mutations. IM are thus endowed with a content that takes the form of a micro-political commentary, lapidary, playful and carnivalesque (Bakhtine 1970), characterised by a form of argumentation that can be said peripheral, because it refers more to the political person than to the political issues themselves (Gauthier 1992 et 1995, Amossy 1999, Perelman and Olbrecht-Tyteca 1970). IM are peripheral micro-argumentation acts of descriptive character, the impact of which is cumulative. In our study, we show that the funny side of the memes is a complex verbo-pictorial strategy centred on big political actors and based on the ad hominem arguments.

Opis:
Internet memes of the type composed of an image macro and text, have a strong form-meaning correlation that is shared among users of social media. Their frequency of usage and the immediacy of their broad reach around the world make them an interesting field of investigation for linguistic studies. I will argue in this article that Internet memes resemble linguistic signs. Users develop a literacy, i.e. a command of their usage through convention and shared usage history. Popular Internet memes can be found in a multiplicity of variations, where details of the shown picture are changed, while the general mood or topic of the meme, mostly expressed in the caption, remains broadly the same. This article will discuss cases where the development of meme variations works along the lines of known cognitive mechanisms like metaphor and metonymy, and their prerequisites, like abstraction. Some meme variations can be represented as grammaticalisation paths that lead to the emergence of grammatical features like morphemes.

Opis:
This article explores if and how populist elements are expressed in Internet memes within German-language political discourses. This is done by conducting a data-based investigation rooted in the discourse historical approach and multimodality theory. Memes with varying political alignments are analysed with regards to how they express either of the following features of populist style: the appeal to the people vs. the elite, the use of bad manners, and the performance of crisis. Special focus is given to the political context as well as the semiotic resources used to convey populist themes. The findings of this study show that in order for populism to be analysed within memes a gradational perspective on populism is necessary. Applying this method, a diverse variety of populist characteristics can be found in memes, revealing the many possibilities of populist expression in this format.

Heroes and villains in memes on the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
Autorzy:

Opis:
Wars and other acute social conflicts are a fruitful ground for the emergence of heroes and villains. This is true for the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine: both the news media and ordinary people have found targets for villainisation (Russian president Vladimir Putin) and heroisation (Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy) since the outbreak of war. The article discusses how the public images of the two leaders appeared in internet memes collected in Estonian and Belarusian social media between February 24 and April 8, 2022. Analysing them against the backdrop of the (stereo)typical traits of heroes and villains in folklore, we outline how the new media format affects the way these two juxtaposed images are portrayed in memes. We also focus on the juxtaposition as one of the key strategies both in the processes of villainisation/heroisation and of humour production. The clear juxtaposition between good and evil in war humour distinguishes it from disaster jokes, which do not usually take a definite stance towards their targets.

The cute and the fluffy : pets, humour and personalisation in political communication

Opis:
When serious official political statements are not enough to get people’s votes, politicians often turn to attention-grabbing and emotion-triggering self-presentation. They give the public access to their “normal, everyday” lives through personalisation and use other tools of “new” politics to create a favourable image of themselves. They can also show the unexpected, backstage aspects of their lives, such as their interactions with their pets. The paper analyses four case studies from different countries (Belarus, Estonia, Slovakia and Spain) in which politicians’ references to their pets became a prominent topic in internet communication and provoked numerous humorous reactions in the form of memes. By looking at various degrees of politicians’ personalisation strategies, we show that “new” and “old” politics should be regarded as the poles of a continuum rather than a binary opposition. We also discuss the content, form and stance of the humorous internet memes posted in reaction to the appearance of politicians’ pets in the news. Our research indicates that such memes function to provoke a discussion and, as a result, form a polyvocal commentary on events; the politicians, however, must take risks accompanying unconventional, revealing political communication and hope that “there's no such thing as bad publicity”.

Opis:
The year 2020 brought an unexpected hard time, referred to as the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic spread globally. It was difficult to combat and people were brought misery, fear, anxiety, coronavirus infection, suffering and death. With the pandemic, a number of restrictions were placed on human contacts. Social life lost its value. From a linguistic point of view, the coronavirus pandemic was clearly reflected in language. Studying the language of social communication during the pandemic has become a challenge for linguistic researchers. The collective monograph “Corona-Pandemie im Text und Diskurs”, edited by Mariusz Jakosz and Marcelina Kałasznik, was published as the 2nd volume of the scientific series “Fields of Linguistics – Aktuelle Fragestellungen und Herausforderungen”. The volume contains three parts and thirteen articles. The foreground of the collective monograph addresses the phenomenon of the coronavirus pandemic, which contributed to the development of the corona language. In terms of language, the pandemic left positive traces. The dissertation presents a textual and discourse analysis against the background of the pandemic. Selected words, texts and phraseologisms were subjected to in-depth study. The results of the study proved beneficial from a linguistic perspective. New words, neologisms, vocabulary complexes were created as lexical innovations. In numerous articles, language researchers present linguistic analyses of the newly created vocabulary in text and discourse. Coronavirus discourse is treated as a phenomenon. Linguists discuss various areas of social life during the pandemic that affected different levels of the language system. Major concepts like distance, distancing, topos, and meme are explained. Internet memes were released during the corona pandemic to show humor, irony, sarcasm, nostalgia, feelings, and social sentiments. Lexical and phraseological aspects of the language are presented using German, Ukrainian, Italian and Slovak as examples. The monograph can be of a didactic nature.

Internet memes - as "units of a cultural transmission, units of imitation" (R. Dawkins) - are nowadays very cognitively rewarding subject of research in the field of humanities. Starting with cultural studies and theory of communication through philosophy and literary theory to sociology and event political science. Main aspect of these products of contemporary (and digital!) culture is - beside communication and imitation - laughter. As M. Baktchtin wrote in his work on Rabelais, "laughter is maybe most important form of recognition of the world" and mems (mostly image with text) achieve that very significantly in digital enviroment of Internent causing great impact on almost every part of our life. As accurate hermeneutic of meme is almost improssible, studying them can lead to interesting conlusions: people use mem to vent the various emotions (love, hate, anger etc.) by laughing the source of them (people, events etc.) and communicating how they feel about it. All of the preceding can constitute valuable information about multilungual and multicultural user enviroment of Internet.
