Opis:
This article is an attempt to analyze the functions, which Piotr Skarga gives in parts of Żywoty świetych focused on the martyrdom of Jesuits. Their biographies can be considered as the argument in the current debate on true and false martyrdom. Skarga, referring to the authority of The Bible and the works of the Church fathers, tried to prove that only the Catholic martyrs are the true ones. Persecutions of Jesuits in England, France, and during the missions to India and to the Americas are also an opportunity for Skarga to show how groundless the allegations are against the Jesuits. In the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, they were accused of pernicious influence on king’s political decisions and greed. Author of Żywoty świętych, using the examples from the life and martyrdom of Jesuits attempted to rehabilitate the opinion of his order.

Opis:
The Chinese Rites Controversy definitively shaped the history of Christianity in China. When some missionaries were exiled in Canton from 1666 to 1671, they sought to resolve their disagreement on whether certain Confucian rituals could be practiced by Chinese Christian converts but their differences ended up even more entrenched. In his unpublished history of the China mission covering the period from 1640 to 1700, the Polish Jesuit Tomasz Ignacy Szpot Dunin (1644-1713) gives an account of the discussions held in Canton. His account not only reveals previously known materials but also offers new insights on the Controversy.

Opis:
The subject of this paper is teaching about the Sacrament of Penance by priest Piotr Skarga and Konstanty Szyrwid, whereas its aim is to show similarities and differences in considerations of the two monks, as well as to determine what they resulted from. The research material comprises sermons titled “O Czwartym Sakramencie o Pokucie” (“About the Fourth Sacrament of Penance”) from the collection Kazania o siedmiu Sakramentach (Sermons about the Seven Sacraments) written by Piotr Skaga and “Punkta na Czwartą Niedzielę Adwentu” (“Points for the Fourth Sunday of the Advent”) from volume I of Punkty kazań (Points of the Sermons). The analysis of the material has shown that both preachers talk about the sacrament in the same way. It results from the fact that the main source of the Jesuits’ sermons were the Bible and patristic texts approved by the Council of Trent, which were to be interpreted according to the methods indicated by the Roman Catholic Church. It guaranteed unity of teaching, especially when all the doctrinal differences appeared along with varied, sometimes radically different, reading of the Holy Bible. Furthermore, Szyrwid must had known Skarga’s sermons, he might have been inspired by them. It is known they were to be read by the monks learning to deliver speeches. Insignificant differences, limited to the amount of presented contents, as proven by the above depiction, are the outcome of different goals set by the monks. Skarga’s output had a defined purpose – a polemic with persons of other faiths. The intention of Szyrwid, however, who had written his sermons in the time when disputes between Reformation and Counter-Reformation were fading away, was to enlighten the faithful. Hence, he did not have to explain the entire complicated and difficult content denied by persons of other faiths to the reader, and he could focus on teaching about this sacrament’s benefits and showing the followers how to prepare for penance. The second essential factor that affects the above mentioned differences is the structure of the sermons. Szyrwid, contrary to Skarga, did not write lengthily. His texts are in the form of points and summaries. They present theses, and next (using a quotation, paraphrase or allusion) they refer to the Holy Bible or to the papers written by the Fathers of the Church. Szyrwid’s comments are rather scarce, and often entirely absent.

Printers of Polish Jesuits in the years 1612-1700
Drukarze polskich jezuitów w latach 1612-1700
Autorzy:
Trybuła, Paulina
Opis:
At the very beginning the Jesuits were afraid of the power of the printed word. However, they realised very soon that print is a necessary tool to achieve their missionary goals. The Jesuits writers were extremely fertile. In time, it turned out that their publishing production is enormous and they had to open their own presses. They were using services of local typographers as well. They also took a liking for Cracow’s typographers. The achievements of the Jesuits are undoubtedly significant in terms of culture propagation and development of polish printing.

Opis:
The works of the Jesuit Franciszek Kowalicki (1668–1730), comprising the collections: Katedra kaznodzieje niedzielnego (Sandomierz 1725), Kaznodzieja odświętny (Sandomierz 1721, 1725), Pustynia w raj delicyj duchownych zamieniona (Sandomierz 1732) and Socyjusz kaznodziei odświętnego (Sandomierz 1728) deserve presentation and characterisation. What draws particular attention in Kowalicki’s work, however, is the collection of sermons Post stary polski, published in 1718 at the Jesuit college in Sandomierz. The author of the present study has made two sermons from the Post stary polski the subject of his reflection. The aim was to characterise these works and to grasp their purpose, as well as the way they functioned within the literary tradition and to highlight their role in the intellectual culture of the epoch. The analysis focused on the Kazanie wieczorne na wtorek zapustny and the Kazanie wieczorne o koronie cierniowej, revealing Kowalicki’s literary strategy. The author of this article undertakes a reflection on the presence of conceptual treatments in the sermonic prose of Franciszek Kowalicki. The definition of concept in Baroque literature is taken after Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski, who in his treatise De acuto et arguto argued that three types of concepts can be distinguished in poetry. One of them is the concept understood as “empty” and “vacuous”, i.e. one that only on the surface resembles the point, but in fact is only its verbal layer. The analysis of the presence of conceptual measures in Franciszek Kowalicki’s prose has made it possible to formulate remarks of a synthesising nature. Post stary polski is above all an example of the wear and tear of certain forms of literary expression and a symptom of the aesthetic transformations taking place at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The second part of the article concerns the political thought of the Roman School, . the issue that has received rather marginal treatment This problem is marginal in the reflection on this movement. However, the author argues that the theology and ecclesiology of the Roman School have a political dimension, because they is were constructed immediately after the Spring of Nations (1848-1849). Moreover, the Roman School put emphasis on Highlighting elements of thought such concepts as authority and tradition, which had in the nineteenth century have a counter-revolutionary character in the nineteenth century. dimension. Although generally rather few writings of theologians of that time touched upon in the politics political matters, nevertheless when they did produce such politically inclined writings, are about the following topics could be distinguished: 1 / open criticism of political, social and cultural liberalism; 2 / affirmation of the traditional view in the relationship between of the state and the Catholic Church, with the former in subordinate position to the latter here the state is in position of subordination; 3 / affirmation of papal infallibility in political issues , and 4 / defense of the independence and integrity of the Papal States.

Opis:
Asia was one of the main areas for Christianization. In the 15th and 16th century popes issued many bulls in which they divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe into an exclusive duopoly between Spain and Portugal. This was the beginning of the systems called Padroado by which the popes delegated to the Spanish and Portuguese kings the administration of the local Church. The most important contacts between Catholic missionaries and China Empire started in 16th century when the Jesuits reached China. In 1600 Matteo Ricci obtained from the emperor the permission to settle in Beijing. Matteo Ricci was known for his appreciation of the indigenous culture of the Chinese. He discovered that Chinese culture was strongly intertwined with Confucian values and therefore Ricci decided that Christianity had to be changed to fit Chinese culture in order to be attractive to the Chinese. This method, known as accommodation, was followed only by Jesuits and allowed them to have the most converts among Chinese people. What's more, the method allowed Jesuits to take the highest positions at the Imperial Court. Johann Adam Schall was a very successful missionary and also a trusted counselor to the emperor. He was entrusted the modification of the Chinese calendar and provision of eclipses of thesun and the moon. The emperors of China were very impressed by the scientific skills of Jesuits. That is why for over 60 years the Jesuits had been the directors of the Directorate of Astronomy. They were also entrusted different important jobs like official interpreters and translators, teachers, cartographers and even official envoys to the western countries.

Opis:
In Japan, the beginning of the seventeenth century gave birth to a new type of literature – anti-Catholic fiction, which aimed at fostering hostility towards foreign missionaries among the mass reader. Late examples of such literature attributed to the apostles of the new faith several supernatural powers (i.e. the ability to fly, disappear, tell fortunes), that separated them from their human dimension. One of the common themes featured in eighteenth and nineteenth century works was a magical experiment which involved conjuring a ghost. Designed to attract the “Catholic sect”, it brought about a campaign of persecution from the authorities instead. Despite adopting a chronicle-like convention in the anti-Catholic fiction, as the paper indicates, it relied heavily on pre-existing legends about the Japanese sorcerer Kashin Koji. Finally, the experiment was most likely imitated in the real word and reused as a method of recruitment by the nineteenth century quasi-Catholic sect established by Mizuno Gunki.
