Les Misérables. A Comparative Analysis of Two Polish Translations of the Libretto and Their English original, Based on Selected Songs
Les Misérables. Analiza porównawcza dwóch polskich przekładów libretta i angielskiego oryginału na podstawie wybranych utworów

This dissertation presents the analysis of two Polish translations of selected works of the Les Misérables musical in comparison with the original, English-language libretto. The aim of the study is to identify and name the differences between the two versions and to reflect on the strategies adopted by the translators, how they combine with contextual factors and how they may affect the reception of the musical. In the first part of the paper, I present the theoretical sources as an introduction to further considerations. I discuss the issues of intersemiotic translation and melic translation. Given the history of the libretto’s translation, I also focus on indirect translation. As my research methodology, I adopt the translation strategies proposed by Jonathan Franzon (2014) and Peter Low's (2016) pentathlon approach, i.e. the interplay of five features of melic translation: singability, sense, naturalness, rhythm and rhyme. The issues of reframing and patronage, as discussed next by André Lefever, which illustrate the role of extratextual factors, i.e. the historical and cultural context, in the production and reception of translation, provide a kind of introduction to the next chapter, devoted to the history of the Les Misérables musical. After discussing the main features of the genre, I introduce the circumstances of the production of Les Misérables, both the original version and the polish versions. In the analytical part, I juxtapose two Polish translations of the libretto – one done by Andrzej Jarecki for the Musical Theatre in Gdynia (premiere in 1989) and the other one, by Daniel Wyszogrodzki for Roma Musical Theatre (premiere in 2010) – with the original lyrics.The final part of the study consists of conclusions, in which I summarise the differences between the translations. I also discuss non-textual factors that may have influenced the quality of the translations
Przedmiotem pracy jest analiza dwóch polskich przekładów wybranych utworów musicalu Les Misérables w zestawieniu z oryginalnym, anglojęzycznym librettem. Celem pracy jest ustalenie i nazwanie różnic między poszczególnymi wersjami oraz refleksja nad tym, czym podyktowane są przyjęte przed tłumaczy strategie, jak łączą się z czynnikami kontekstowymi i w jaki sposób mogą wpływać na odbiór musicalu. W pierwszej części pracy przedstawiam źródła teoretyczne stanowiące wstęp do dalszych rozważań. Omówione zostają zagadnienia związane z przekładem intersemiotycznym oraz przekładem melicznym. Z uwagi na historię tłumaczenia libretta Les Misérables skupiam się także na przekładzie pośrednim. Jako metodologię badań przyjmuję zaproponowane przez Jonathana Franzona (2014) strategie tłumaczeniowe oraz model pięcioboju Petera Lowa (2016), czyli współgranie pięciu cech przekładu melicznego: śpiewalność, sens, naturalność, rytm oraz rym. Omówione następnie zagadnienia refrakcji i patronatu w ujęciu André Lefevera, które obrazują rolę czynników pozatekstowych, tj. kontekstu historyczno-kulturowego, w produkcji i recepcji przekładu, stanowią pewnego rodzaju wstęp do następnego rozdziału, poświęconego historii musicalu Les Misérables. Po omówieniu głównych cech gatunku przybliżam okoliczności powstania Les Misérables, zarówno wersji pierwotnej, jak i przekładów. W części analitycznej zestawiam dwa polskie przekłady libretta – autorstwa Andrzeja Jareckiego dla Teatru Muzycznego w Gdyni (premiera: 1989 rok) Daniela Wyszogrodzkiego na potrzeby Teatru Muzycznego Roma (premiera: 2010 rok) – z oryginalnym tekstem piosenek. Ostatnią część pracy stanowią wnioski, w których podsumowuję różnice zaistniałe między przekładami. Omawiam również czynniki pozatekstowe, które mogły wpłynąć na jakość przekładów.

The paper presents contemporary developments in the field of deterministic description of turbulence with special reference to Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods. The limitations of conventional turbulence modelling based on stochastic methodology have been discussed, and reasons for development of deterministic approach outlined. It has been shown that the computational power of the fastest available computers restrict possible DNS (Direct Numerical Simulation) solutions to the range of small Reynolds numbers. Finally, basic assumptions have been formulated for the LES formalism that seem to offer a reasonable compromise between the tendency towards the deterministic solution to Navier-Stokes equations and the existing computational resources.
Praca przedstawia współczesny stan wiedzy w dziedzinie numerycznego modelowania turbulencji ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem metody LES (ang. Large Eddy Simulation). Przedstawiono ograniczenia modeli turbulencji typu RANS, opartych o uśrednione w czasie równania Reynoldsa oraz wskazano perspektywy deterministycznego ujęcia turbulencji z użyciem metod DNS (ang. Direct Numerical Simulation). Wykazano również, że możliwości najszybszych dostępnych obecnie komputerów ograniczają możliwe obszary aplikacji DNS do przepływów o stosunkowo niskich liczbach Reynoldsa. Następnie sformułowano podstawowe zależności dla metod LES i wskazano ich perspektywiczne znaczenie dla inżynierskiego modelowania przepływów turbulentnych.

The suitability of existing models for the simulation of flow through turbomachines is investigated and compared with a recently proposed adaptive turbulence model. Discussed are the improvements in accuracy that can be achieved by using non-linear turbulence models and unsteady calculations. The adaptive turbulence model is based on two equation turbulence modeling. It uses the temporal and spatial scales of the flow field to automatically adapt itself to the unresolved turbulent fluctuations. At its asymptotic limits it reduces either to a Direct Numerical Simulation – when the turbulent scales are in the order of the Kolmogorov micro scale – or to a standard two equation model – when the fluctuations are not resolved at all. In order to compare the quality of the presented models two cases have been considered: the flow past a cylinder and a subsonic as well as transonic flow past the VKI turbine blade. Calculations have been performed for each case using all the models and the results have been compared with measurements. The unsteady calculations gave better agreement with the experimental data demonstrating the superiority over steady state calculations for turbomachines.

Opis:
This article is devoted to structural-semantic research in French and Georgian languages. Every literary work determines the history of its country and nation, culture and tradition. In literary works with the use of different stylistic devices, topics, characters and historical facts are shown. Very often writers use Oïkonyms (oïkos from the Greek word meaning ‘house’ or-, ‘dwelling’) as the city’s name allows us to create a general view about a nation’s culture, art and history. Thus, Oïkonyms are the determinants of a topic and of important facts in literary works. Synchronous course of historical facts gives some meaning to the city names and their utilization in literary works creates an emotional background for the reader. In literary texts, Oïkonyms create a special effect as they cause profound and mysterious feelings. The readers’ imagination will determine the meanings of these feelings. Every writer uses the name of a city to create and to identify a concrete cognitive idea in a literary work. As a result, research into the use of Oïkonyms in the context of literary onomastics, with its variety, development and multilateral perception, is a developing field of research.
Chaque œuvre littéraire définit l’histoire des pays et des peuples, leur culture et leurs traditions. Les personnages, les sujets et les faits historiques des œuvres littéraires sont décrits par différentes méthodes stylistiques. Le fait historique se traduit souvent par les noms de lieux, notamment, les noms de villes qui permettent de créer un point de vue général sur la culture et l’histoire de la nation. Donc, en général, les noms de villes ont une importance significative pour le sujet d’une œuvre littéraire. Les écrivains se servent de noms de villes pour décrire le monde où se déroule la vie des personnages et exprimer leurs émotions, car il y a des villes dont les noms sont associés à des évènements significatifs, émotifs. La séquence des faits historiques redonne une importance particulière aux oïkonymes. Leur emploi dans la littérature peut susciter de l’émotion chez les lecteurs. Dans la littérature, les noms de villes ont une valeur particulière. Ils suscitent un sentiment profond et mystérieux, dont la perception dépend de l’imagination du lecteur. Chaque écrivain utilise les noms de villes ou ceux de lieux habités pour identifier son propre style ainsi que les idées cognitives décrites dans une œuvre littéraire concrète. Donc l’étude des noms de lieux, notamment, ceux de villes, à travers le prisme de l’onomastique littéraire comparée du français et du géorgien, avec leurs diversités de développement et de perception redondance de diversités attire l’attention des chercheurs.

A dialectic between presence and absence, remembrance and oblivion, testimony and silence, body and its trace reflects the gist of the most recent Ernaux’es book. It constitutes not only plenteaus thematic confluence but also or even majorly an axis of the book’s construction. Its structure encompasses various layers such as: rhetorical, stylistic and typographic, which separately and together combined reside in prevailing tensioned coexistence of presence and absence.
