    Opis:
    Celem artykułu było przedstawienie procesu wyludniania się fińskiej Laponii na tle całej Finlandii i Unii Europejskiej. Przeanalizowane zostały również możliwe skutki tego procesu. Badania zostały przeprowadzone na podstawie oficjalnych danych statystycznych dotyczących demografii Finlandii oraz prognoz demograficznych opracowanych przez fińskie instytucje naukowe. Wyniki analiz wskazały, że poza nielicznymi obszarami zurbanizowanymi, fińska Laponia w ciągu najbliższych dekad będzie się wyludniać. Depopulacja regionu będzie zagrażać funkcjonowaniu jednostek samorządu terytorialnego w Laponii, gdyż dotychczasowe działania mające na celu poprawienie bilansu demograficznego regionu nie przyniosły zakładanych efektów.
    The aim of the article was to present the depopulation process of Finnish Lapland against the background of the whole of Finland and the European Union. The possible effects of this process have also been analyzed. The research was based on official statistics on the demographics of Finland and demographic forecasts compiled by Finnish scientific institutions. The results of the analyzes indicated that, apart from a few urbanized areas, Finnish Lapland will be depopulated in the coming decades. The depopulation of the region will endanger the functioning of the local government units in Lapland. At the same time, the activities aimed at increasing the demographic balance have not brought the assumed effects so far.

    Sub fos sil re mains of a new spe cies of Cla do cera (wa ter fleas) of the fam ily Chy do ri dae in Fin land, Alona wer estschagini Si nev, were found in the sedi ments of four lakes above the treeline in north ern most Fin nish Lap land. The remains were found in sur face sedi ments of three lakes and in early Holo cene sedi ments of one lake where the spe cies was a pio neer which soon dis ap peared. The re mains of A. wer est schagini, ex cept the male postab do men, closely re sem ble Alona gut tata. In Eura sia A. wer est schagini has a wide but patchy dis tri bu tion in cold cli mates, sug gest ing that it is a post gla cial rel ict adapted to cold cli mate and oligo trophic lakes. Re cently it has been found also in Nor way and Kola Pen in sula. The early Holo cene finds in di cate that the spe cies spread to north ern most Fin land af ter the re treat of the Scan di na vian Ice Sheet. Since the spe cies has been found in lakes in very se vere con di tions it may be used as a palaeo lim no logi cal in di ca tor in sedi ment stud ies.

    Opis:
    The paper applies to the city of Rovaniemi and the morphological and spatial structure of its urban space. As a result of a comparative analysis of chronologically compiled town plans conducted by the Conzenian school of urban morphology, correlated with the written sources about the history of the city and field research, six stages of morphologic-spatial development of Rovaniemi were specified. A number of factors which exerted an influence on the development of the urban space of the town in the course of time have also been identified.
    Artykuł dotyczy historii kształtowania się współczesnej struktury morfologiczno-przestrzennej miasta Rovaniemi (Laponia, Finlandia). W wyniku przeprowadzonej analizy porównawczej chronologicznie zestawionych planów miasta metodą M.R.G. Conzena, uzupełnionej o kwerendę literatury dotyczącej historii miasta i badania terenowe, w dziejach Rovaniemi wydzielono sześć etapów rozwoju morfologiczno-przestrzennego. Wyodrębniono także szereg czynników, które wywierały wpływ na przestrzeń miasta w poszczególnych okresach jego rozwoju.

    The pres ent work is a part of the de vel op ment of a method which uses the rela tive pro por tions of asexu ally and sexually re pro duc ing chy do rid fe males to re con struct the length of the open- water sea son. Sur face sedi ments (5 cm) of Lake Ai tajärvi, north ern Fin nish Lap land, were ex am ined for mod ern and re cent pro por tions of chy do rid cla do ceran ephip pia in sub arc tic cli mate near the pine limit. The to tal chy do rid ephip pium pro por tions (TCE) were stead ily 9.5–9.7% in the Ai tajärvi sedi ment but de clined to 8.4% in the up per most sam ple. The re sult was com pared with the sur face sedi ment TCE from four lakes in south ern Fin land where it var ied be tween 3–6%. It was also com pared with the TCE from two lakes in north ern most Fin nish Lap land above the treeline in very se vere cli mate, where it was 26–30%. These very high val ues sug gest that there might be a thresh old in cli mate con di tions be tween Ai tajärvi and the two north ern most lakes that al ters the re pro duc tion of chy do rids to wards an even more im por tant role of sex ual repro duc tion.

    Opis:
    W artykule podjęto próbę analizy efektywności polityki regionalnej Unii Europejskiej i Finlandii wobec obszarów peryferyjnych w pierwszym dla tego państwa okresie programowania 1995–1999. Szczególna uwaga została poświęcona Laponii. Ze względu na niekorzystne warunki przyrodnicze region ten borykał się z wieloma problemami, spośród których pierwotnym wydaje się być depopulacja. Polityka regionalna prowadzona wobec Laponii miała na celu zahamowanie tego procesu. Jednak błędy popełnione przy planowaniu skutkowały jej niepowodzeniem. Można zatem postawić hipotezę, że nie wysokość nakładów finansowych przeznaczonych na zwiększenie konkurencyjności regionu, ale znajomość jego specyfiki może przynieść pożądane efekty. Tymczasem, w kontekście polityki regionalnej wobec Laponii, okres 1995–1999 charakteryzował się niewłaściwym planowaniem opartym na zbyt powierzchownych analizach.
    The article attempts to analyze the effectiveness of the regional policy of the European Union and Finland towards peripheral areas in the first programming period for this country, 1995–1999. Particular attention was devoted to Lapland. Due to unfavorable natural conditions, the region struggled with many problems, the primary of which seems to be depopulation. Lapland’s regional policy aimed to stop this process. However, mistakes made in its planning resulted in its failure. Therefore, it can be hypothesized that it is not the amount of financial outlays intended to increase the competitiveness of the region, but the knowledge of its specificity, that may bring the desired results. Meanwhile, in the context of regional policy towards Lapland, the period 1995–1999 was characterized by inadequate planning based on overly superficial analyzes.

    The whole rodent community (eight arvicoline species) has been followed at Pallasjärvi. at the northern limit of Clethrionomys glareolus in Finnish Lapland, since 1970. Dynamics were cyclic until the mid 1980's, but since then the pattern has been stable. Also the species abundances have changed. The delayed density dependence, characterising the cyclic period, is not found during the stable period. Causes for this change in cyclicity are discussed. The bank vole is the most common rodent species in forests up to its northern limit. The long-term, year around live trapping studies and feeding experiments suggest e.g. that delayed maturation of young is not optimal but due to social constraints. Food addition resulted in higher densities, but the effect on the density-dependent structure was negligible and the dynamics were not affected by food addition.

    Opis:
    Analizę diatomologiczną wykonano dla próbek osadów holoceńskich z Małego Stawu w Karkonoszach (Polska) i z jeziora Somaslampi w Laponii (Finlandia). Z rdzenia osadów Małego Stawu o miąższości 882 cm oznaczono 184 taksony należące do 30 rodzajów. Do gatunków dominujących należą okrzemki obojętne względem pH. W diagramie okrzemkowym wydzielono 6 poziomów okrzemkowych (diatom assemblage zones - DAZ: DMS-1 - DMS-6) w oparciu o wyniki analizy klastralnej. W profilu osadów jeziora Somaslampi o miąższości 249 cm zidentyfikowano 250 taksonów należących do 40 rodzajów. W diagramie wyróżniono 4 poziomy okrzemkowe (DAZ: DS-1 - DS.-4). W jeziorze Somaslampi dominują formy alkalifilne i obojętne. Pomimo różnic wynikających z odmiennych warunków klimatycznych, środowiska naturalnego i podłoża, zaobserwowano występowanie tych samych gatunków okrzemek w obydwu jeziorach, ale w różnych zawartościach procentowych. Większość taksonów okrzemek występujących w badanych profilach określanych jest jako formy północnoalpejskie, typowe dla jezior oligotroficznych.
