The current paper researches and analyses the start and development of the hotel business in Lviv of the interwar period. The main focus is set on the division of accommodation establishments into categories, their structure and location. Much attention is also paid to the description of hotels and their pricing policy depending on their status and venue. Opis:
The reviewed monograph is the first extensive paper on the vocabulary of the western variant of the Ukrainian language based on the texts of the ‘Twelve’, an interwar literary circle of writers from Lʹviv. The paper highlights the social dialects that functioned in Lʹviv during the interwar period, in particular the jargon of schoolchildren and athletes. Particular attention is paid to balak, which became a linguistic feature of the Batyar subculture. This subculture reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s. Material collated from three editions of B. Nyzhankivskyi’s collection Street (1936, 1941, 1995) illustrates the specifics of Soviet editorial practice, which was aimed at limiting the use of western Ukrainian vocabulary in order to artificially bring the Ukrainian language closer to Russian.
Recenzowana monografia jest pierwszą obszerną pracą na temat słownictwa zachodniej odmiany języka ukraińskiego na podstawie tekstów "Dwunastki", międzywojennego literackiego ugrupowania pisarzy z Lwowa. W artykule zwrócono uwagę na dialekty społeczne funkcjonujące we Lwowie w okresie międzywojennym, w szczególności na żargon młodzieży szkolnej i sportowców. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na balak, który stał się językową cechą subkultury batiarskiej. Subkultura ta osiągnęła szczyt rozwoju w latach dwudziestych i trzydziestych XX wieku. Materiał zebrany z trzech wydań zbioru B. Nyzhankivskiego Ulica (1936, 1941, 1995) ilustruje specyfikę radzieckiej praktyki edytorskiej, której celem było ograniczenie użycia zachodnioukraińskiego słownictwa, aby sztucznie zbliżyć język ukraiński do rosyjskiego.

The article discusses the question of the Armenian origin of the Lviv chronicler Jan Tomasz Józefowicz (1662‑1728). The origin of the myth as to the Armenian ancestry of the Lviv chronicler Jan Tomasz Józefowicz dates back to the mid‑19th century. This was concocted by Aleksander Batowski and especially by Sadok Barącz. The latter presented a false Armenian genealogy not only for Józefowicz but also for the Lviv historian Bartłomej Zimorowicz, the poet Szymon Szymonowicz, and other historical figures who had no connection to Armenian families whatsoever. The myth about Józefowicz's Armenian roots was to persist particularly strongly and even survived until the beginning of the 21st century, appearing in numerous publications. However, these imaginary Armenian origins did not align with his own oral accounts, and the information about Armenian history found in his chronicles. Recent publications and the appearance of municipal legal registers along with the testaments of Lviv citizens into scholarly circulation allow us to confidently state that Józefowicz had Polish origins with elements of German and Italian heritage.

Opis:
The article offers an analysis of the actualisation of Ukrainian vocabulary, primarily in the Galician dialect. Yurii Vynnychuk's novels Tsenzor sniv (Eng. Dream Censor) and Tango smerti (Eng. The Tango of Death) have been chosen as sources for this research. Particular attention is paid to vocabulary for naming abstract notions, some polite words, and vocabulary relating to L'viv domestic life. Furthermore, the semantic structure and stylistic features of the actualised L'viv dialect are identified. The results indicate that the vocabulary in Yurii Vynnychuk's novels was used to describe life in L'viv during the interwar period. In addition, an analysis of modern dictionaries demonstrates that Galician vocabulary, and the L'viv dialect in particular, are returning to the core of the lexical system.
Artykuł poświęcony jest aktualizacji słownictwa galicyjskiego. Materiałem badawczym są powieści Jurija Vynnychuka Cenzor sniv (2013) i Tango smerti (2016), na których podstawie autor charakteryzuje główne grupy lwowskiego koine, wyróżniając słownictwo abstrakcyjne, domowe, indywidualne wzory etykiety i wiele innych. Określa funkcje zaktualizowanego słownictwa w tekstach literackich oraz analizuje reprezentację jednostek leksykalnych we współczesnych słownikach języka ukraińskiego. Ponadto w artykule dokonana została analiza osobliwości opisu używanych skrótów słownikowych badanych leksemów.

Opis:
Abstract is dedicated to the historical and culturological analysis of the contemporary names of streets and squares of Lviv, occurred from well-known Poles’ surnames. Are examined 1189 names, from which 72% arose via transformation of anthroponym. Are found 19 names, basis of which became Polish surnames. Analysis showed that the majority of names departs by its roots to Austro- Hungarian Empire or Soviet period, only 4 of them were appropriated already in the independent Ukraine. The persons who are immortalized, first of all, are representatives of the different branches of culture, science and skill. Most of them represented literature - in 9 names. Among the onymical motivations were found 3 types: 1) motivation by the direct connection of man with the street or the city (place of stay or bury), here are involved such names, as Банаха, Запольськог, Бой-Желенського, Коноптцьког, Фредра 2) the creation of the immortalized personality is valuable for the Ukrainian culture or contains elements, connected with the Ukraine (Кльоновича, Кольберга, Ожешко, Словацького), 3) the reputation of immortalized face has the world nature (Коперника, Мщкевича, Шопена). The first type possesses real motivation, when second and third type names are only memorial names, especially productive in contemporary urbanonymy. Analysis was made on the basis of the dictionary-handbooks by B. Melnyk and S. Gromov.

Like other institutions of this type in the old Polish period, the City Council of Lviv, the primary authority in the city, gathered its own book collection. It consisted of books as well as other bibliological documents, initially handwritten, then copied by using the typographic technique. Acquisition of essential books stemmed from the practical needs of the office as they served as reference collection. It included primarily legal books but also historical, astronomical, scientific and others. Apart from purchasing on the book market, books were rewritten on demand of the councilors. The collection also included books that were donated or dedicated to the city. The Council, which fulfilled the legislative, administrative and to some extent also the judiciary function, was also one of the few cultural centers in the city and a cultural patron. It can be assumed that at the end of the 17th century, apart from handwritten archival manuscripts, the library possessed over 100 books. It is hard to estimate the overall number of prints and other bibliological documents that passed through the Council over the time
