Opis:: The article is aimed at contributing to the discussion of the role of the mass media system in political transformation. For this purpose, reporting on a political issue relevant to the transformation was selected for tracing the theoretical assumption along empirical results: the hitherto taboo topic of Hungarian uprising in 1956. I studied how 1956 was reported in Hungary’s main print media, Népszabadság and Magyar Nemzet, from June 1988 to June 1989. These newspapers, despite still being controlled by the government in the dissolving socialist system of the end 1980s, helped a functional public sphere emerging. The newspapers broadened the interpretive scope by facilitating dissenting opinions and enabled a hitherto suppressed discourse about Kadar’s role in the historical events of 1956. The results suggest the newspapers acted as professional mediators and had a systemic stabilising effect on Hungarian society in this smouldering conflict.

Opis:: The main features and tendencies in the formation and development of the modern media system in Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union are examined in the article. In particular, the factors influencing the transition from the Soviet model of the press to the model of polarized pluralism are analyzed. The author also identifies the conditions necessary for the stable and progressive development of the media system to emerge in Ukraine, which include the development of public broadcasting, guaranteeing the independence of the media in various dimensions, the development of media pluralism, the strengthening of the mechanisms of self-regulation of the media, raising standards and increasing the diversity of forms of journalist education.

Opis:: In this paper the author interprets the changing role of mass media in social processes over recent decades. Society’s perception of mass media is also investigated, with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe. The author explores mass media’s position in the societies of the region, asking how these societies interpret media messages. He analyzes the context of people’s reservations about media messages (people’s misgivings, conditioned by social history). One of the key arguments of the paper is that the majority of audiences in the countries concerned have grown more sceptical of mass media messages than have the audiences of Western European countries. According to the author, various social groups consider that the mass media is heavily politicized and that its construction of reality has little in common with their own interpretations.

Media attention of prisons as a result of the countrys culture influence on the form of prison system, based on the example of prisons: San Pedro, Cebu and Halden

Opis:: Celem niniejszej pracy było zbadanie czy istnieje związek pomiędzy medialnością wybranych więzień, a wpływem kultury kraju na ich formę więziennictwa. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów: pierwszy zajmuje się analizą takich pojęć jak: instytucja więzienia, kultura i medialność. Kolejne trzy rozdziały skupiają się na przeanalizowaniu konkretnych więzień, tj. więzienie Halden, więzienie Cebu (CPDRC) oraz więzienie San Pedro. Każdy z tych rozdziałów podzielony jest na trzy zasadnicze części, w których poruszona jest po krótce historia i kultura kraju, a także ogólny zarys formy więziennictwa z naciskiem na konkretny wybrany przypadek. Dodatkowo ostatnią częścią każdego rozdziału jest zbadanie obecności danego więzienia w mass mediach wraz z przybliżaniem powodu zdobytej medialności.
The aim of this thesis was to study whether there is a relation between the media attention of selected prisons and the country's culture influence on the form of theirs prison system. The work consists of four chapters: the first is analyzing concepts such as: the institution of the prison, culture and media. The next three chapters focus on the analysis of specific prisons, i.e. Halden Prison, Cebu Prison (CPDRC) and San Pedro Prison. Each of these chapters is divided into three main parts, which briefly discuss the history and culture of the country, as well as the general outline of the form/system of prison with an emphasis on a specific selected cases. In addition, the last part of each chapter is to examine the presence of a given prison in the mass media along with the reason for the media obtained.

Opis:: The paper shows the phenomenon of popular culture against the background of modern society. The latter society, in view of its properties, constitutes perfect conditions for the development of the culture in question. The variety of bits of information „floating” through modern society, the large number of principles, values, attitudes or life styles make up a mirror in which the „image” of popular culture is reflected. The paper turns our attention to specific processes and phenomena characteristic of today society. Accordingly, popular culture has this particular shape. The paper stresses the role of modern society in shaping popular culture, and shows that there is an obvious relationship between the two phenomena. Besides, it makes us aware that popular culture is not a phenomenon isolated from reality, or a phenomenon which is „beyond us”. Rather, it is something that we, more or less consciously, create and in which we participate.
