Opis:: The proposed amendment contains regulations specifying the burden of proof in proceedings conducted by the pension body in relation to persons who acquired a benefit under the Act on Retirement Provision of Miners and Their Families. In the author’s opinion, the acceptance of the proposed solution only in relation to the group of insured persons indicated in the bill raises doubts in the light of the constitutional principle of equality due to the fact that a similar situation regarding the calculation of pensions applies to other insured persons who acquired benefits under the Act on Retirement Provision of Employees and Their Families.

The process of socialization lets young people assimilate knowledge and abilities required to play a social role, to understand what the role of the worker is, to learn how to behave in order to meet other people’s expectations and to adapt one’s conduct to that of others. Therefore, if properly planned and carried out, the process of socialization has a major impact on the safety culture of an individual, and thus the overall level of safety culture throughout the enterprise. This article discusses examples of activities carried out by the Katowicki Holding Węglowy S.A. in the socialization of students of mining.

The master thesis shows the impact of cash benefits to feel job satisfaction of young engineers lower mining supervision. It shows the relationship between the approach to perform the duties of employees under punishments pressure and the prospect of rewards. It gives a picture of the specifics the mining environment, and clearly defines the components of salary in theory and in mining.

Opis:: Aim: Several studies suggest that coal miners are under risk of severe health problems such as cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, renal, hematological and musculoskeletal disorders. However, there are limited data on biochemical changes in underground workers. In our study we aimed to evaluate the association between serum homocysteine (Hcy), vitamin B12, cystatin C and folate levels in the blood of underground coal miners. Materials and Methods: Eighty one coal miners who work as underground or surface workers were recruited into our study. The study population was divided into two groups: the surface worker group (control group, n=33) and the underground worker group (n=48). The folate, vitamin B12, Hcy, cystatin C levels and body mass indexes (BMI) of both groups were measured and compared. Serum folate, Hcy and vitamin B12 levels were measured with a competitive chemiluminescence immunassay. Serum levels of cystatin C were determined by the latex particle-enhanced turbidimetric method using a cystatin C kit. Urea values were measured with a kinetic method on an automated analyzer. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the underground workers and surface workers in the urea, cystatin C and vitamin B12 levels. High serum Hcy levels and low folate levels were found in underground workers compared with those in surface workers. The correlation between Hcy and folate levels was also statistically significant. Similarly, there was also a significant correlation between Hcy and vitamin B12, and between Hcy and cystatin C levels. Conclusions: Elevated Hcy levels may be associated with underground working but further research is necessary to understand the relation between elevated Hcy and increased prevalence of health problems in coal miners.

Opis:: Objective: The aim of the study was comparison of cancer incidence risk of lungs, stomach, colon, bladder and kidneys from ex-miners of black coal mines and the general male population of the Czech Republic. Materials and methods: The analysis was conducted in two cohorts of ex-miners according to the presence of coalworkers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP). The first cohort included the miners without CWP (N = 6705), and the second cohort included the miners who were compensated for CWP (N = 2158). Personal and occupational data was merged with the data in the National Population Register and the National Oncological Register for the period from 1992 to 2006. Cancer risk in miners in comparison to the general male population of the Czech Republic was evaluated by SIR (Standardized Incidence Ratio) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: About twice as high risk of lung cancer was found in miners with CWP (SIR = 2.21; 95% CI: 1.75–2.76). Lung cancer risk correlated with the severity of CWP (simple CWP SIR=1.96; 95% CI: 1.48–2.56, progressive massive fibrosis SIR = 4.29; 95% CI: 2.09–7.87). No increased risk of lung cancer was found in ex-miners without CWP. The risk of malignant neoplasm at the other selected sites was comparable with the risk in the general male population of the Czech Republic. Conclusions: This study found increased lung cancer risk in coal miners with CWP, but not in those without CWP, comparing with the general population. These results served as the basis for the inclusion of lung cancer in association with CWP into a new Czech list of occupational diseases.

Opis:: The purpose of the publication is to present the fate of Polish miners in Estonia between 1937 and 1939. Until now, this topic has only been hinted at by some Polish historians while doing other research. This article is based on Polish and Estonian documents which are kept in the Central Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw and the National Archives of Estonia in Tallinn, respectively. This allowed the Polish and Estonian viewpoints on the subject to be compared. Taking into account the state of research on the discussed topic, the article presents such issues as the genesis, course and consequences of the emigration of Polish miners to Estonia. The analysis of Polish and Estonian documents indicates that the main reason for labour migration from Poland to Estonia was material deprivation, which went hand in hand with access to the foreign labour market. Lack of work opportunities and poverty in Poland forced miners to seek work abroad. At the same time, economic changes in Estonia during the interwar period led to the emergence of new industries in the country, the most important of which was the fuel industry. Estonia needed foreign miners to work in shale mines. Poland was the only country that supplied Estonia with miners, as the budding Estonian oil industry was unable to meet the demands for skilled professionals from Western Europe.

Opis:: Górnicy podlegali przymusowi ubezpieczenia z uwagi na niezdolność do pracy znacznie wcześniej, niż zostały wprowadzone powszechne obligatoryjne ubezpieczenia emerytalne. W okresie wprowadzenia powszechnego ubezpieczenia emerytalnego posiadali dodatkowe ubezpieczenie pensyjne, z którego uzyskiwali świadczenia z uwagi na niezdolność do pracy z powodu wieku lub niepełnosprawności. Na takie ukształtowanie się struktury ubezpieczenia w okresie międzywojennym miał wpływ przede wszystkim historyczny rozwój brackich ubezpieczeń pensyjnych. Ponadto szczególnie trudne warunki pracy w branży miały być równoważone dodatkowymi świadczeniami w celu zachęcenia do pracy w kopalniach.
The miners had compulsory insurance due to the inability to work much earlier than has been introduced general compulsory pension insurance. The miners in the period introduction of a universal pension scheme had additional insurance pensyjne from which to obtain an benefit due to the inability to work because of age or disability. On the formation of the structure of insurance in the interwar period was influenced mainly by the historical development of insurance brackich pensyjnych. Furthermore particularly difficult working conditions in the industry were to be balanced by additional benefits to encourage work in the mines.

The issue of heritage, the attempts at determining its essence and its present-day role is a subject broadly discussed by researchers and practitioners – various research orientations define it differently. The author of this paper presents examples of religiousness of Wieliczka miners as an element of cultural heritage of this group, characteristic for the community, as well as its various manifestations, both tangible and intangible. The author deals with most typical and visible forms of religiousness, which have their source in mining traditions. The issue is worth attention due to multi-century history of the place, hard work of miners and preservation of the forms of worship at the moment of transformation of the facility from an industrial mine to a tourist location. The author discusses selected examples that are the most characteristic elements of the traditions of Wieliczka miners with the aim of show their present-day validity.

Opis:: In the article, the author investigates 24 musical manuscripts belonging to former Miners’ Orchestra of Wałbrzych (Waldenburger Bergkapelle), which used the sources for concerts of the orchestra. The analysed manuscripts have not yet been researched or catalogued in RISM (Répertoire International des Sources Musicales) database before. The ensemble’s repertoire was analysed and the collection’s characteristics, including copyists, watermarks and stamps, were examined. It allowed to assess the provenience of the manuscripts and make certain remarks about the type of repertoire played by Waldenburger Bergkapelle. The results of the analysis were presented in the context that can be found in secondary sources, widely describing the activity of the orchestra. The author also carried on cataloguing in Warsaw University Library, creating the catalogue in the Muscat RISM system. Considering the numbers on shelfmarks, it can be assumed that the original collection contained circa one hundred of musical sources. However, only a small part of them is known and catalogued. Therefore, the knowledge of the collection remains incomplete and is worth further investigation.

Opis:: Background What significantly affects the health of an individual health behaviour. It is of particular importance in the case of people working in very harsh environmental conditions. The aim of this study is to examine health behaviour among miners. Material and Methods The research data was collected with the use of the diagnostic survey method based on the Health Behaviour Inventory questionnaire developed by Juczyński. Two hundred coal miners were surveyed. The results obtained were subjected to a statistical analysis. A significance level of p < 0.05 was assumed, which indicates the occurrence of statistically significant differences or relations. Results The level of health behaviour among miners may be determined as medium and low. The research group obtained the best results with regard to their mental attitude, while their preventive behaviour received the worst evaluation. Conclusions The research confirms the necessity of implementing health promotion programmes among miners, which would be focusing particularly on health behaviour. Med Pr 2015;66(6):753–761
Wstęp Elementem istotnie wpływającym na stan zdrowia jednostki są jej zachowania zdrowotne. Szczególnie rolę odgrywają w przypadku osób wykonujących pracę zawodową w bardzo trudnych warunkach środowiskowych. Dlatego celem pracy było zbadanie zachowań zdrowotnych górników. Materiał i metody W pracy wykorzystano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego w oparciu o kwestionariusz Inwentarza Zachowań Zdrowotnych Juczyńskiego. Badaniami objęto 200 górników kopalni węgla kamiennego. Uzyskane wyniki badań poddano analizie statystycznej. Za poziom istotności przyjęto p < 0,05 wskazujący na istnienie istotnych statystycznie różnic bądź zależności. Wyniki Zachowania zdrowotne górników kształtują się na poziomie średnim i niskim. Najlepsze wyniki badana grupa uzyskała w zakresie nastawienia psychicznego, a najgorzej ocenione zostały zachowania profilaktyczne. Wnioski Badania potwierdzają konieczność wdrażania programów promocji zdrowia wśród górników szczególnie ukierunkowanych na zachowania zdrowotne. Med. Pr. 2015;66(6):753–761
