    Opis:
    Incorporating human subjectivity in applied disciplines of social sciences and other base sciences poses a challenge as the nature of qualitative data is often the point of contention. Q methodology is a tool that addresses this challenge as it helps quantify qualitative data using Q factor analysis. Initially developed for psychology and political sciences, Q methodology now finds its use in many research disciplines of science, especially in interdisciplinary studies that take into account human subjectivity. This article provides a detailed description on the various steps involved in conducting a Q study, with special emphasis on data interpretation. To describe the methodology and demonstrate data interpretation, we used data from our pilot case study of socio-ecological nature that documents attitudes of people towards nature conservation on private land. Additionally, we mention the specific usefulness of this method, highlight the potential challenges at each step of the approach, and provide practical advice to overcome them. In our opinion, Q methodology has been more restricted in its use on the ground of being a more social or psychological tool, and therefore, our aim is to familiarize researchers who could be interested in a mixed approach of joining quantitative data analysis with qualitative, in-depth interpretation with the approach at hand.

    Opis:
    Aim. The paper addresses the problem of formative assessment in the foreign language (FL) classroom. Its main objective is to present the outcomes of a study identifying tendencies related to the use of formative assessment during English lessons in Polish high schools, and students’ opinions on the frequency, type and effects of assessment they had been provided with during secondary school education. Methods. The data come from a retrospective study applying a mixed-method approach. They were gathered with a questionnaire based on a Likert scale, complemented with a few open-ended questions. The responses were provided by 106 students who graduated various high schools in the years 2014-2017 in 36 towns/cities located in different regions of Poland. The frequencies of using formative assessment in the case of all the FL skills and subskills are presented in comparison to summative assessment. The qualitative data were coded with an aim of finding some common trends.    Results. The study showed that in the case of the participants of this research, formative assessment in secondary education at EFL classes was evidently neglected. Many students (approximately 25%) acknowledged to never having been provided with formative assessment with regards to pronunciation, receptive and productive skills. The open responses signal students’ awareness of the importance of feedback and of several negative effects resulting from the lack of its regular provision.    Conclusions. The data gathered in the study seem to call for the need to raise the understanding of the role and the practical abilities to use formative assessment in the EFL classroom both at pre-service and in-service teacher training courses.

    Projekty, w których przychodzi nam pracować z dużymi wolumenami danych tekstowych, pochodzących z rożnych źródeł i zapisanych w różnorodnych formatach, rodzą wiele dylematów natury metodologicznej, wymagają często niestandardowych decyzji i rozwiązań. W szczególności zadanie polegające na opracowaniu danych o różnorodnej jakości, nieustrukturyzowanych typu quan i qual wymagać może pracy, w której dynamicznie zmieniają się strategie analizy danych, sposoby przekształcania danych tekstowych. Artykuł opisuje przykład takiej właśnie „dynamicznej” metodyki. Wykazała ona swoją wartość w zadaniu polegającym na klasyfikacji wypowiedzi pisanych. W tak zarysowanym kontekście autor artykułu mierzy się z następującymi celami: (a) czy można zastosować oprogramowanie klasy CAQDAS do pracy półautomatycznej lub automatycznej zastępującej część manualnej pracy nad klasyfikacją wypowiedzi? (b) jak skonstruować metodykę klasyfikacji dla danych o różnorodnej jakości? (c) kiedy klasyfikacja automatyczna jest przydatna, a kiedy nie ma szans powodzenia? W artykule zaznaczone zostaną momenty, w których analityk sięga po wiedzę typową dla analiz danych jakościowych oraz te, kiedy wiedza z tego obszaru nie jest już wystarczająca do realizacji wskazanych celów (natural language processing, uczenie maszynowe). Przykład projektu będący tłem artykułu wymusił zastosowanie kilku narzędzi i języków wspierających pracę na danych. Praca nad transformacją, klasyfikacją oraz wizualizacją wyników wymagała zastosowania bazy MySQL oraz programów: R, QDA Miner, Wordstat, QlikSense. Roli i ograniczeniom narzędzi klasy CAQDAS poświęconych zostało także kilka uwag.
    Projects which we work with—large volumes of text data that are acquired from various sources and stored in a variety of formats—rise many dilemmas of a methodological nature, often require unstandardized decisions and solutions. In particular, compiling data of various quality, unstructured types, and of quan and qual nature requires dynamic strategies, ideas, and ways of analysis. The article describes an example of this approach. It shows its value in classification of written statements. In such context, the author of the article faces the following objectives: (a) can we use CAQDASso that semiautomatic or automatic work would replace some manual work regarding classification of the expressions; (b) how to construct a classification methodology for data of various quality; (c) when the automatic classification is useful and when there is no chance of success? The article will be marked with moments in which the analyst reaches for knowledge typical for qualitative data analysis, and when the knowledge of this area is no longer sufficient to classify content (natural language processing, machine learning). An example of a project being the background of this article forced the use of several tools and languages to support work with the data. Work on the transformation, classification, and visualization of results required applications such as: MySQL, R, QDA Miner, WordStat, Qlik Sense. Role and limits of the computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software tools have also been noted.

    Opis:
    This paper analyzes the meanings attributed to work in contemporary Polish society in the context of Inglehart and Welzel’s claim regarding the passage from survival to self-expression values. Research has documented a systematic decline in the position of work on the list of the most important values. However, work is also documented as being of fundamental importance for identity, self-esteem, and the delimitation of social categories. The authors offer a mixed-methods approach to the issue of work. Based on quantitative data gathered through the EVS, they place Poland in the context of European trends pertaining to the significance and centrality of work. Using qualitative evidence, the authors identify and reconstruct the key social representations employed to think about and discuss work-related issues. In conclusion, they point to structural elements of the social imaginary of work that result in the coexistence of different (often contradictory) perceptions of this sphere of social life.

    Opis:
    According to the founding treaties, the European Union is based on the recognition of certain values: freedom, democracy, pluralism, diversity, and equality between women and men. Although existing data indicate that Polish society is generally supportive of the EU, recent discussions about Polexit and axiological conflicts within Polish society suggest that these values do not enjoy universal and unconditional support. We employed a mixed methods approach to analyze the attitudes of Poles towards the EU. Using quantitative methods, we identified key aspects of a radical Catholic-nationalistic orientation. Based on a qualitative investigation, we established that those with a radical axiological orientation who reject European values do not proclaim anti-Europeanism openly. An analysis of data from far-right actors’ social media provides a more precise understanding of the meanings and emotions associated with Europe and the European Union within radical Catholic-nationalist narratives. The most prominent feature of these narratives is the emphasis on the alleged “moral decline” of older European societies, along with the postulation of alternative forms of European integration that move away from cultural integration.

    Opis:
    The article describes the process of designing a mixed strategy – from the qualitative approach to the quantitative approach. Important in this approach is the idea of integrating both research strategies, which is supposed to foster more effective cognition of the studied phenomenon. The authors describe the stages of the conducted qualitative research (theoretical assumptions, methods of collecting and analyzing empirical data) and the planned stages of quantitative research aimed at constructing a psychometric tool based on the cognitive effects of qualitative research. The article presents the results of qualitative research (the first stage of the mixed strategy) – the Model of Life Re-Decisions (four stages of self-relation) and Biographical Orders. The model depicts breakthrough life changes in the context of self-realization, from the perspective of broad humanistic psychology. The authors’ intention is to draw attention to the value of teamwork and to inspire readers to break through research patterns (searching for new research solutions).
    Artykuł zawiera opis procesu tworzenia projektu badań w strategii mieszanej. Autorki prezentują swoją drogę przejścia od metod jakościowych do ilościowych oraz swój pomysł ich twórczej integracji. Projekt badawczy opisany jest nie tylko od strony metodologicznej, ale zawiera także autorską koncepcję teoretyczną w postaci Modelu re-decyzji życiowych. Autorki podejmują wątki przełomowych zmian życiowych w kontekście samorealizacji, z punktu widzenia szeroko rozumianej psychologii humanistycznej, oraz tego, jak połączenie różnych typów danych sprzyja bardziej efektywnemu badaniu danego zjawiska. Intencją autorek jest inspirowanie do przełamywania własnych schematów naukowych oraz ukazanie wartościowości współpracy i zespołowości.

    Opis:
    Two elastic plate problems made of duralumin are solved analytically using the displacement potential approach for the case of plane strain and plane stress conditions. Firstly, a one end fixed plate is considered in which the rest of the edges are stiffened and a uniform load is applied to the opposite end of the fixed end. Secondly, a plate is considered in which all of the edges are stiffened and a uniform tension is applied at its both ends. Solutions to both of the problems are presented for the case of plane stress and plane strain conditions. The effects of plane stress and plane strain conditions on the solutions are explained. In the case of stiffening of the edges of the plate, the shape of the plate does not change abruptly, which is clearly observed in both of the cases. For the plane strain condition, the plates become stiffer in the loading direction as compared to the plane stress condition. For the plane strain condition, there is a significant variation of the normal stress component, σzz at different sections of the plate. The graphical results, clearly identify the critical regions of the plate for the case of the plane stress and plane strain condition.
