Opis:: Qualitative interviews with six female runners shed light on the gender gap in women’s participation in shorter versus longer road races. The interviews reveal that “mother guilt” and “time constraints” play a significant role in the development of a running identity among women. While the running community promotes a discourse centered around a “disembodied” runner — someone totally and unconstrainedly dedicated to running — the participants in this study experienced conflicts between their roles as mothers and their identity as runners. The conflicts led them to engage in challenging the dominant discourse by actively negotiating a mothering and running identity. The findings suggest that women are redefining the boundaries around running and subsequently — running subculture itself.

Opis:: This paper presents the results of fieldwork concerning local development programmes addressed to poor Indian women and the social changes they effect in the marginalised Mazahua communities in central Mexico conducted from 2011 to 2015. By analysing the operation of a women’s cooperative I show how neoliberal ideology, which is at the core of development schemes, incorporates both the feminist ideas of gender equality and empowerment of women, and the Mexican tradition of politicising maternity in a crisis to establish new social hierarchies, subjectivities, and power relations, promote individualistic attitudes and a new, “market-oriented” morality, and reinforce political clientelism, leading to profound and usually detrimental (for women and local gender relations) changes in the functioning of native communities.

Opis:: While acknowledging some of the myriad ways in which the term "dreamwork" has been used by scholars over the past century, this article directs especial attention to dreamwork as both a facet of motherwork and form of anticipatory socialization. This particular conception views dreamwork as an interpersonal accomplishment and emphasizes its collaborative character. In arguing for its utility, we note how this conception of dreamwork complements insights found in other works and suggest how these ideas might be related, and future research on parental involvement in the lives of children strengthened, by gathering them together under the concept of dreamwork.

Opis:: In this paper, we demonstrate how the figure of the Virgin Mary functions as an important element of the lived religion of contemporary Catholic and Muslim mothers in Poland. Based on the analysis of in-depth interviews and observational data we argue that the figure of Mary is recognized as a religious ideal and a role model by mothers identifying with both religions. We trace similarities and differences between Catholic and Muslim mothers in their reflexive engagement with ideas, symbols, and prescriptions attached to Mary and discuss how they reinvent the figure and ascribe it with personalised meanings: embrace some of the traditional attributes of Mary, challenge, and contest others, and construct new meanings firmly embedded in their daily life mothering experiences.
W artykule przedstawiamy, w jaki sposób figura Maryi – matki Jezusa - funkcjonuje jako ważny element religii przeżywanej wśród współczesnych muzułmańskich i katolickich matek w Polsce. Opierając się na analizie wywiadów pogłębionych i danych obserwacyjnych dowodzimy, że Maryja uznawana jest za religijny ideał i wzór do naśladowania zarówno przez matki wyznające Islam, jak i matki katolickie. Śledzimy podobieństwa i różnice w refleksywnym zaangażowaniu wyznawczyń obu religii w idee, symbole i nakazy związane z Maryją oraz omawiamy, w jaki sposób religijne matki konstruują tę postać na nowo przypisując jej spersonalizowane znaczenia: przyjmując niektóre tradycyjne atrybuty Maryi, kwestionując lub odrzucając inne, a także tworząc nowe znaczenia mocno osadzone we własnych codziennych doświadczeniach macierzyńskich.

Tytuł:: From a periphery to the Muslim centre : raising children in religion in the experiences of Polish women converts to Islam

Opis:: This article explores the experiences of Polish mothers who have converted to Islam and are raising their children in the faith. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 20 Polish converts, we analyse how maternal and religious identities are co-constructed through everyday practices of child-rearing. Using the spatial metaphor of centre and periphery, we demonstrate how convert mothers navigate their position of limited inclusion within Islam and move towards an imagined religious centre. In this context, raising children in Islam serves both as a reinforcement of the mothers’ own religious identity and as a means of fulfilling culturally and religiously mandated maternal duties. We discuss the challenges identified by women aiming to transmit Islam to their children in a non-Muslim environment, the efforts they make to embody the ideal of a pious Muslim mother in everyday life, and their strategic use of the idea of ‘pure Islam’.
Cet article explore les expériences des mères polonaises qui se sont converties à l’islam et élèvent leurs enfants dans cette foi. En s’appuyant sur des entretiens approfondis avec vingt converties polonaises, nous analysons comment les identités maternelles et religieuses se co-construisent à travers les pratiques quotidiennes de l’éducation des enfants. En utilisant la métaphore spatiale du centre et de la périphérie, nous démontrons comment les mères converties naviguent dans leur position d’inclusion limitée au sein de l’islam et se dirigent vers un centre religieux imaginé. Dans ce contexte, élever des enfants dans l’islam sert à la fois de renforcement de l’identité religieuse des mères et de moyen de remplir des devoirs maternels culturellement et religieusement mandatés. Nous discutons des défis identifiés par les femmes visant à transmettre l’islam à leurs enfants dans un environnement non musulman, des efforts qu’elles déploient pour incarner l’idéal de la mère musulmane pieuse dans la vie quotidienne, et de leur utilisation stratégique de la notion "d’islam pur"
