Opis:: The absence of improved forage grass species in Nasarawa ecological zone has prompted a study to identify improved species for use. A potted screen house study was therfore conducted using four improved forage grass species obtained from the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) Shika near Zaria, Nigeria. The four forage species were thus sown into four soil types obtained from four locations in Nasarawa State arranged in a randomized complete block design. Records were taken for percent emergence, weekly growth rate and dry matter yields. The results indicated that there was significant differences in the percent emergence, weekly growth rate and dry matter yield.

Tytuł:: Ethnicity and the dilemma of ethno-communal conflicts in North-Central Nigeria : the case of Nasarawa State

Opis:: This paper considers the contemporary phenomenon of ethno-communal conflict and its dilemmas in north-central Nigeria, with particular reference to Nasarawa State. By way of a synthesis of primary and secondary research, enabled by a combination of field interviews/discussions and library sources, the paper posits that the incidence and prevalence of ethno-communal conflict in north-central Nigeria has been influenced by the socio-ecological dialectics of the region. It observes that existence of multiple primordial cleavages in the area has created an enabling ambience for volatile inter-group relations and identity contestations. Hence, it is submitted that contemporary trajectories of communal conflict in Nasarawa State reflect a fundamental contradiction of identity/ethnic politics; situation that has been complicated by elite politicking and the apparent failure of the government to moderate conflict drivers and fault lines in a manner that leverages mutual and sustainable inter-group coexistence/inter-ethnic relations.

Opis:: The quality of Amba River in Nasarawa State in the North Central Nigeria was investigated for a period of one year covering dry and rainy season. Water samples were collected from four different locations (Gandu, Wadatan-Waje, Kofan-Kaura and Unguwan-Galadima) along the river course and analyzed for Bacteriological parameter, using standard methods. The results indicated seasonal variation in coliform population with higher values at Wadatan-waje and Unguwan-galadima during rainy season. The values obtained for coliform on the average for the two seasons were beyond the maximum acceptable standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2004) for drinking water. Thus, settlers along the River should be enlightened on the danger of consuming untreated water from the River. Also, measures at regulating the pollution of the River should be taken for a healthy and vibrant community.
