Opis:
Studia Neo(Latina) rediviva. A Few Remarks on and Postulates for Neo-Latin studiesThe main aim of the paper is to present the major perspectives on some of the most important issues related to contemporary neo-Latin studies. Their status as an autonomous discipline independent from classical philology is still an object of many contemporary disputes and controversies among the philologists and historians of literature, philosophy (ideas) or culture. One promoter of neo-Latin studies in Poland, Maria Cytowska, claimed that these studies are a branch derived from classical philology and aimed at neo-Latin literature flourishing in Europe from the fourteenth century until nowadays. According to this view, strongly related to the estimation and hierarchisation of both disciplines, neo-Latin studies appear to be subordinated to their – metaphorically speaking– ‘older sister’, namely classical philology. The question concerning the perspectives in studies on neo-Latin texts is always involved in a much more complicated question about their disciplinary status and boundaries. The Renaissance, or the initial period in the history of early modern Europe, also has great significance for the evolution of Latin. Humanists were interested in the rebirth of the stylistic models that they rediscovered in the books of ancient writers, especially Cicero, Vergil, Ovid, Horace, and Livy. As Ann Moss says, it was a Latin “language turn,” a kind of radical reorientation in thinking about Latin. The main object of their observations and interests was language in use, analysed in a wide context (grammatical, rhetorical, and logical) and applied to academic debates, religious polemics, and the art of interpretation. The philological activity of Renaissance humanists (editions, translations, and commentaries of ancient authors) is considered as the inauguration of neo-Latin culture.Neo-Latin studies, both interdisciplinary and comparative, could be currently a great chance for the revival of classical philology, whose role and significance in the Polish educational system seems to be increasingly marginalised. There are three main fields of studies on neo-Latin literature: monographic researches on neo-Latin authors (e.g. Kochanowski, Szymonowic or Sarbiewski), critical editions of neo-Latin texts, and their translations from Latin into vernacular languages with appropriate commentaries. The studies mentioned above should be practised simultaneously, we believe, to give us a better and more comprehensive understanding of early modern culture in Europe. This text discusses various possibilities for conducting research concentrated primarily on literary culture in early modern Europe. It brings consideration of issues such as: literary criticism in neo-Latin studies, various aspects of working on critical editions of texts written in Latin, translation studies associated with a variety of methodological approaches (hermeneutics, semiotics, structuralism, deconstruction, cultural studies), and competences – both linguistic and philological – of a perfect neo-Latinist. The paper is treated by its authors as a reference point for further discussions and investigations on neo-Latin culture in early modern Europe and one of its intrinsic parts, namely Poland.

Opis:
The paper is an outline of the issue of Neo-Latin vocabulary in the context of dictionaries covering words taken from early-modern Latin texts. Apart from the “Dictionary of Renaissance Latin from prose sources” by René Hoven and some very useful minor Neo-Latin word-lists scholars dealing with the works of 16th and 17th century do not have specialized Latin lexicons on mainly Renaissance and Baroque literature. Even dictionaries on classical, mediaeval or ecclesiastical Latin sometimes are helpful only to some extent. The author proposes preparing the early modern Neo-Latin dictionary mainly from the works by the Polish authors.

Opis:
The article analyses the role of Latin as a universal means of communication among intellectuals during the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. The author argues that the main task of Neo-Latin studies in Ukraine is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary study of literature and the affirmation of the modern concept of the history of Ukrainian culture as an inherently synthetic process. As a result of even a superficial review of the Latin authors of the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries and the imagery of their works, we can learn much about the place and role of bourgeoisie and Polish noblemen in Ukrainian society of that time, as well as look with new eyes at the Cossacks, clergy, and peasants, reaching not only to previously unknown information but also, what is valuable to a philologist, to its refined wording. The representatives of a variety of professional circles, political views, and regions made their contribution to the Latin works in different genres during more than five hundred years – that is why the reader can now afford to choose works for every taste.

Opis:
The article offers insights on the reception and literary transmission of the religious and biblical threads running through the astronomical treatise Introductorium compendiosum in Tractatum sphaerae materialis Ioannis de Sacrobusto of Jan of Głogów. As a narrative and historical book, the Bible offered a broad market for tales in both oral and written form and apocryphal works of fiction, which were adopted and adapted in Jan’s dissertation in order to meet the scientific tasks and expectations of young listeners, thus making the practical realization of the scholastic educational standards and needs. Among others, the article examines in Jan’s treatise popular biblical tales, such as Adam and Eve, Moses, Noah, Abraham, and Jerusalem and the Hell together with their geographical and astronomical features. The history of Pontius Pilatus is also discussed with his alleged German descent. This combination of such disparate narrative and research material shows both the wealth of Jan’s storytelling and his ability to teach astronomy.

Opis:
Acon is one of the six eclogues written by Giovanni Pontano, one of the most remarkable humanists of the Italian Quattrocento. In this work, the author presents an image of conjugal love by the usage of a bucolic context, a model of shepherd love and some myths from Ovid’s Meta- morphoses. He also refers to some facts from his own biography (marriage with Adriana Sassone). The pastoral figures who speak in the eclogue Acon are Petasillus and Saliuncus. They reminisce their master Meliseus (Pontano’s alter ego) who used to sing beautiful songs for his beloved wife Ariadna. The topics of those songs were the period of engagement, the first days of marriage and the pain caused by the separation of the spouses.
