Opis:
This paper concerns measurements and calculations of low frequency noise for semiconductor layers with four-probe electrodes. The measurements setup for the voltage noise cross-correlation method is described. The gain calculations for local resistance noise are performed to evaluate the contribution to total noise from different areas of the layer. It was shown, through numerical calculations and noise measurements, that in four-point probe specimens, with separated current and voltage terminals, the non-resistance noise of the contact and the resistance noise of the layer can be identified. The four-point probe method is used to find the low frequency resistance noise of the GaSb layer with a different doping type. For n-type and p-type GaSb layers with low carrier concentrations, the measured noise is dominated by the non-resistance noise contributions from contacts. Low frequency resistance noise was identified in high-doped GaSb layers (both types). At room temperature, such resistance noise in an n-type GaSb layer is significantly larger than for p-type GaSb with comparable doping concentration.

Opis:
This study aimed to develop exposure-response relationships (ERRs) between road, rail, and air traffic noise and high noise annoyance (HNA) and to assess the HNA disease burden. In 2023, 4640 adults were cross-sectionally sampled from the five largest cities in Bulgaria. Participants' road, rail/tram, and air traffic HNA was defined as the top two categories (60% cut-off point) of a 5-point scale. A 72% cut-off approximation was also used. European Noise Directive maps were used to assign day-evening-night equivalent sound levels (Lden) to residences. ERRs were derived and used, together with the new WHO disability weight for HNA, to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). DALYs were monetised based on Bulgaria's gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and the value of a life year (VOLY). In fully adjusted models, Lden was non-linearly associated with HNA. Road traffic Lden [range 42.5–77.5 dB] was positively associated with HNA only above 62.5 dB, whereas the upward trend for rail [range 37.5–72.5 dB] and air traffic Lden [range 37.5–57.5 dB] started at 40–45 dB. Using this study's ERRs, the burden among people exposed to ≥40 dB was 3476 (1896–5056) DALYs, $ 39 138 953 (21 348 520–56 929 386) based on GDP, and € 243 310 984 (94 796 487–505 581 266) based on VOLY. Using the WHO's curves, the burden was 4312 (2352–6273) DALYs, $ 48 559 330 (26 486 907–70 631 753), and € 301 873 648 (117 613 110–627 269 918). In conclusion, we could only derive a plausible ERR for railway noise annoyance. Until better ERRs are derived for the Bulgarian population, we recommend using the WHO curves for road traffic and aircraft noise annoyance.

Opis:
This paper reviews the literature on noise monitoring, noise mapping and noise modeling studies carried out in different countries by many researchers. The article reveals the current status of the noise-related studies and noise mapping studies. It was discovered that 90% of the noise monitoring studies were focused on the traffic noise, while the remaining 10% focused on the residential, commercial and industrial areas. Sometimes, there may be a necessity to analyze the sound pressure levels all over the place, or around a particular piece of land and machinery of industry. Researchers have used the noise monitoring data for the development of 2D and 3D noise maps which gives a clear picture of the noise level around the source of noise in X, Y, and Z direction. For taking a decision regarding the noise level for any development project, predicting the noise level is always necessary. The traffic noise models are generally used for the purpose of prediction. Early models are based on constant vehicle speed, later some models predicted the noise level for interrupting the traffic flow. For instance, the Stop and Go model can be used for the prediction of the noise level in an interrupted flow. Four such models were reviewed and compared in this article.

Opis:
The paper presents experimental research carried out to determine the possible actions to reduce the noise generated by trams in a highly urbanised area. A few design strategies affecting tram ride quality have been presented – especially in the aspect of the acoustic phenomena. Main sources of the noise in trams were characterised. The paper includes selected results of comprehensive studies of tram noise in the pass-by test based on the authors’ research methodology. The tests were carried out on various types of trams to recognise the acoustic phenomena characteristic for the rolling stock in a selected tram system. The results of the measurements were analysed both in the field of amplitudes based on noise maps and in respect to frequencies based on noise spectra. The results indicated the rolling noise as important issue demanding taking some actions in order to reduce its level. In this area, elements for the application of individual attenuation solutions, i.e. at the source and during propagation, were presented. The results of the measurements were used as input data to the assumptions of the noise attenuation passive system, which was the final outcome of the study. Dedicated external dampers were used in the case of wheel and rail pairs, where the dominant power of the noise is emitted. The acoustic properties of the bogie area and the bogie side covers were redeveloped to hamper the noise propagation, which is a novel application. The presented results indicate measurable benefits from the applied solutions on the tram noise reduction.

Opis:
Noise mapping is based on long-term noise indicators, such as LN or LDEN. On the other hand, transportation intensity changes during a day (road traffic peak hours) or a year (more flights during holidays) and this variability is not reflected in single sound level values. We wanted to find out whether not only sound level but also the number of noise events is the factor influencing noise annoyance assessment. Ambisonic recordings of real traffic in a city were used. Road, tramway, and aircraft traffic were investigated and two factors were manipulated: the equivalent sound level value and the number of noise events. All stimuli were presented in an anechoic chamber. The results showed that sound level is always a statistically significant parameter while the number of events has an impact only for tramways and airplanes. Moreover, the difference is observed only between one or more subgroups, no matter what the sound level value was. For road traffic this relation was not found to be statistically significant. It was also shown that the existence of tramway bonus or airplane malus is linked with the number of noise events.

Opis:
The Environmental Noise Directive (END), published in 2002, was transposed into Romanian local law in 2005, and it was the starting point for the first urban noise mapping exercises, initially conducted in nine Romanian cities. This paper presents the main evolutionary aspects of the noise assessment process, the development of strategic noise maps, and action plans, dealing with both the legislative side and the practical approach and results obtained. The study considers the specific regulations established by the European Commission regarding environmental noise assessment and deals with the global context at the country level, in which they have been implemented and applied.

Opis:
The paper presents basic legal conditions, applicable to the calculation of cumulative noise levels in the environment with indication mainly on lack of detailed regulations both in formal and methodological approach for evaluating those levels. The paper is focused on methodological approach with the emphasis on analysis of existing case studies in the industry. The main subject of the analysis is the cumulation of industrial noise sources: newly designed and existing ones, together with a proposal of accumulate other types of the noise. Evaluation of cumulative noise levels for new (designed) objects is realised by computational methods, and for existing objects, by measurements or by combination of measurement and computational methods. It is assumed that the cumulative level is an energetic sum of the rating levels for all installations and it will not exceed the limit value in a given place. For the cumulation of different noise sources, the weighting for criterion values of these sources will be applied in aggregation.

Opis:
In this paper there is presented and discussed a general analysis method for noise characterization of noisy multiport differential networks. It is based on mixed mode, differential and common mode, noise waves representation of noise, generalized mixed-mode scattering parameters and generalized mixed-mode noise wave correlation parameters for the network. There are derived analytical relation between the noise figure for a given output port and the noise matrix and the scattering parameters of the network, as well as the correlations between the input port noise waves. The signal to noise ratio degradation factor is derived and discussed, too. Presented results can be implemented directly in a CAD software noise analysis of differential microwave multiport networks with differential as well as with conventional single ended ports.

Opis:
An important aspect in assessing noise in urban agglomerations is the subjective one, which takes into account the sensitivity and specific reactions of residents to the noise in their living environment. This paper presents results of a sociological study initiated to determine the population awareness, regarding the urban acoustic environment and estimation of effects and disturbance. The survey was conducted in a Romanian city, to complement the information provided by the strategic noise map of the area. This approach allows the estimation of specific local patterns of reaction and response to urban noise of the exposed population and provides the information, needed to develop action plans and to set proper solutions for urban area planning.
