Opis:
Obesity, which occurs both in rich as well as developing countries, is a chronic disease that can cause many serious illnesses. It has become a global health problem, which affects onethird of adult population in the world. To induce weight loss, profound lifestyle modification is required. In the case, when lifestyle changes alone are insufficient, pharmacotherapy can be helpful. Most of anti-obesity drugs (e. g. fenfluramine, sibutramine, rimonabant), which have been approved for treatment of obesity, were subsequently withdrawn from the market due to their adverse effects. In this manuscript, a short overview of currently available anti-obesity drugs like orlistat, lorcaserin, liragutide as well as phentermine/topiramate and naltrexone/ bupropion combination, was presented. Herein we focus on efficiency, mechanism of action and possible side effects of anti-obesity drugs. Finally, it was emphasized that better understanding of mechanisms involved in appetite regulation could be useful for developing novel, more effective and better tolerated anti-obesity drugs.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to establish psychological characteristics of overweight and obese women and to delineate the similarities and differences of this characteristics between women with overweight and obesity and women with normal weight. 80 women aged 48, with increased body mass index (43 with overweight – BMI = 25.1A˛30 and 37 with obesity – BMI > 30) and 80 women at similar age (average 46,8) with normal weight participated in the study. Various techniques were used: Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, Life Orientation Test, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale, 3-factors Personality States and Traits Questionnaire, Kuhl Action Control Scale, Perceived Stress Scale and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). The results indicate that women with overweight and obesity reveal lower level of personal resources such as self-efficacy, self-esteem and level of optimism. Obese women elicited beliefs in powerful others in health locus of control. Obese subjects stronger perceive stress than women with normal weight. In coping with stress they use less task, and more avoidance strategies.

Opis:
Introduction: There is evidence that placebo and nocebo effects are significant for many conditions, but their impact on weight loss has not yet been well described. Material and methods: A systematic review of studies indexed on PubMed, Cochrane, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, TripDatabase, and Embase was carried out. Studies (1) with at least two study groups - placebo and a corresponding control group; (2) published in English; and (3) focusing on adults participating in weight loss programs or on placebo/nocebo effects in weight loss were included. Synthesis and meta-analysis of the results of studies with comparable research plans were performed. Results: Some preliminary trends suggesting placebo and nocebo effects in weight loss were found. Placebo effects manifested in trends towards a slightly greater reduction of Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat ratio in the placebo compared with the control groups. On the other hand, in one study, it was found that the expectancy effects of taking oral weight-loss agents might be disadvantageous (i.e., because they elicit a nocebo effect on weight loss). Conclusion: The findings suggest a possibility that the nocebo effect may occur when an intervention has a medical context. In contrast, the placebo effect can be observed in cases where the intervention is of a different nature. However, considering the low number of studies analyzing the use of placebos in weight loss, new primary research is needed.

Opis:
Introduction. The overweight and obesity epidemic represents a rapidly growing threat to the health of populations in an increasing number of countries. Nearly one-third of the world’s population has excess adipose tissue. Nowadays, obesity occurrence is so common that it is replacing more traditional problems, such as an undernutrition and infectious diseases, as the most significant causes of ill health. If the current trend continues, almost half of the world’s adult population will be overweight or obese by 2030. Objective. The aim of this study is to show the connection between recent trends in body mass index, and the globally changing cancer profile. State of knowledge. A range of clinical and epidemiological studies have shown the relationship between excess body fat and the most frequently occurring malignancies. Obesity is associated with many cancers, such as: breast, colorectal, liver, lung, kidney, oesophageal, pancreatic, endometrium, ovarian, prostate, thyroid, and gallbladder cancer. Conclusions. In the light of this information, the study supports the claimed statement that obesity is one of the major health problems of the 21st century. Considering the increase in the number of obese people worldwide, it is necessary to develop a strategy allowing to prevent it. Fighting against unhealthy lifestyle in order to reduce overweight and obesity in society may have an essential impact on decreasing the number of incidences of cancer.
