Opis:: The meaning of past tenses is presented in various grammars in different ways. It was especially the hypothesis of the aspect-oriented meaning of Perfekt tense that has been paid attention to; its supporters claim that German Perfekt and Plusquamperfekt tenses express the meaning of completed action. The analysis of works of scholars has proved that the basic meaning of Perfekt tense is expressing the concept of anteriority. In the following part a few grammars have been presented. Their authors analysed the meaning of Perfekt tense having discussed telic and atelic verbs.

Opis:: This paper investigates various aspects of grammaticalization of Polish and Kashubian periphrastic verb forms with mieć\miec and bëc and participles. The involvement of factors, which are due to language contact or to autonomous development is thoroughly explored and analyzed in the context of basic grammaticalization parameters. At the same time this contribution should prove with valid arguments the thesis of an inhomogeneous, variably realized and partly of others (all above pragmatic) factors dependent grammaticalization der habere-\esse-forms in the Slavia. So this paper refers both to the canonical differences in the realization of single grammaticalization parameters as well as broader developmental tendencies in the Slavia.

The empirical analysis of the meaning variants of past tenses in German and Polish

Opis:: Das Thema dieser Arbeit ist die empirische Analyse von Bedeutungsvarianten der Vergangenheitstempora im Deutschen und Polnischen. Am Anfang wird eine kurze Beschreibung der Tempussysteme in den beiden Sprachen und der von den einzelnen Autoren vorgeschlagenen Definitionen von den für den gewählten Untersuchungsgegenstand relevanten Grundtermini dargestellt. Es wird auch auf ein umstrittenes Problem hingewiesen, nämlich ob das Tempus „Perfekt” im Polnischen vorhanden ist. Der nächste Schritt besteht darin, die verschiedenen Bedeutungsvarianten der Vergangenheitstempora in der deutschen Sprache detailliert darzustellen, was den Leser schnell in die behandelten Themen einführt. Ihre Vielfalt erwies sich als reiches Material für die spätere empirische Analyse. Der nächste Schritt der Arbeit ist die Besprechung der Bedeutungsvarianten von Vergangenheitstempora in der polnischen Sprache, was die bisher eingeführten theoretischen Grundlagen für die empirische Analyse ergänzt. Der letzte Teil der Arbeit ist der empirischen Analyse gewidmet. Das Korpus für die Analyse besteht aus ausgewählten Presseartikeln, die in den elektronischen Korpora „Cosmas II” und „Narodowy Korpus Języka Polskiego” („Das Polnische Nationalkorpus”) zugänglich sind. Das Ziel der durchgeführten Untersuchungen besteht darin, die Häufigkeit des Auftretens der einzelnen Bedeutungsvarianten von Vergangenheitstempora darzustellen und zu untersuchen, welche davon die häufigste ist. Ich konzentriere mich auch auf den Vergleich von Bedeutungsvarianten im Polnischen und Deutschen. Dieser Vergleich hat sich jedoch als eine große Herausforderung erwiesen, da die beiden Tempussysteme sehr unterschiedlich sind.
The subject of this thesis is the empirical analysis of the meaning variants of past tenses in German and Polish. The paper discusses the meaning variants of past tenses in both languages. It begins with a brief description of temporal systems and definitions of selected terms relevant for the chosen subject of research proposed by individual authors. Attention was drawn to a controversial problem, namely whether the tense ‚Perfect’ exists in Polish. The next step is to present in detail the various meanings of the past tenses in German, which quickly introduces the reader in the issues that have been mentioned. Their diversity turned out to provide rich material for later empirical analysis. The next chapter contains a description of meaning variants of past tenses in Polish. The last part of the paper is devoted to the empirical analysis. The corpus for the empirical research consists of selected press articles from two electronic corpora: ‚Cosmas II’ and ‚Narodowy Korpus Języka Polskiego’ (‚Polish National Corpus’). The aim of the analysis was to present the frequency of occurrence of particular meaning variants and to examine, which of them is the most common. Another aim was to focus on the comparison of meaning variants in Polish and German. However, this comparison has proved to be a huge challenge due to significant differences between the temporal systems in both languages.
Tematem niniejszej pracy jest analiza empiryczna wariantów znaczeniowych przeszłych czasów gramatycznych w języku niemieckim i polskim. W pracy zostały podjęte rozważania dotyczące wariantów znaczeniowych przeszłych czasów gramatycznych w obu językach. Rozpoczyna je krótka charakterystyka systemów czasowych oraz omówienie definicji kluczowych terminów dla wybranego obszaru badań, jakie zostały sformułowane przez poszczególnych autorów w dostępnej literaturze przedmiotu. Zwrócono również uwagę na kontrowersyjny problem związany z opisem czasów gramatycznych w języku polskim, mianowicie czy we wspomnianym języku występuje czas „Perfekt”. Krok następny stanowi dokładne przedstawienie poszczególnych wariantów znaczeniowych przeszłych czasów gramatycznych w języku niemieckim, które szybko wprowadza czytelnika w podjęte zagadnienia. Ich różnorodność okazała się być bogatym materiałem do późniejszej analizy empirycznej. Kolejnym etapem pracy jest omówienie wariantów znaczeniowych przeszłych czasów gramatycznych w języku polskim, co pozwala uzupełnić zgromadzoną do tej pory wiedzę niezbędną w celu przeprowadzenia wyżej wspomnianej analizy. Ostatnia część pracy została poświęcona analizie empirycznej. Zbiór tekstów wykorzystanych w analizie stanowiły wybrane artykuły prasowe dostępne w następujących korpusach elektronicznych: „Cosmas II” i „Narodowy Korpus Języka Polskiego”. Celem analizy było przedstawienie częstotliwości występowania poszczególnych wariantów znaczeniowych czasów gramatycznych, zbadanie, który z wariantów występuje najczęściej, oraz porównanie różnic i podobieństw w tym zakresie pomiędzy j. polskim i niemieckim. Jednakże porównanie to okazało się być ogromnym wyzwaniem, ponieważ oba systemy czasowe diametralnie się od siebie różnią.

Opis:: The paper presents an analysis of the grammatical function of the German perfect tense form by encoding the “real” times. The theoretical base provides a combination of two separate concepts, i.e. Reichenbach’s and Weinrich’s model, and is an attempt to combine them into one, prototypical model. As an additional criterion, the classification according to Vendler is introduced, because one of the goals of the paper is also to examine the use of auxiliary verbs haben-have and sein-be in verbal periphrases depending on their Aktionsart, or type of activity.
Artykuł przedstawia analizę funkcji czasu gramatycznego Perfekt w kodowaniu czasów realnych współczesnego języka niemieckiego przy połączeniu dwóch odrębnych koncepcji, tj. schematu Reichenbacha oraz modelu Weinricha oraz próbę ich połączenia w jeden, prototypowy model. Jako dodatkowe kryterium wprowadzona zostaje klasyfikacja sposobów wykonania czynności wg. Vendlera, gdyż jednym z celów artykułu jest także zbadanie użycia czasowników posiłkowych haben-mieć oraz sein-być w peryfrazach czasownikowych w zależności od ich Aktionsart, czyli rodzaju czynności.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to highlight a problematic use of the Portuguese tense Pretérito Perfeito Composto in comparison to the use of English Present Perfect and Spanish Pretérito Perfecto Compuesto. A great number of mistakes in use of this tense is observed in the students’ production in their L3 Portuguese as a result of apparent similarity between the Portuguese and the Spanish tense. The article is expected to present differences in temporal and aspectual approaches of these tenses. The use of Portuguese construction is much more restricted, limited in fact to the imperfect, repeated or prolonged actions that continue in the present. However, the apparent similarities in form provoke the students to transfer the tense constructions from the other languages. We observe the mechanisms of transfer and try to underline the essential differences in usage of these tenses.

The aim of the presented thesis has been to provide an introduction to the nature and usage of past tenses in German with special attention paid to language characteristic of newspapers. This work is divided into three big chapters. Firstly, I concentrated on the theoretical foundations connected with terminology necessary to characterize the analyzed phenomenon and classification of German tenses. The second part contains of the main information about description of the past tenses in grammars. It includes also the trends of the tenses in the actual German language - the downfall of preterite, the history and usage of the double past perfect. The following chapter is the practical part. It is devoted to the frequency and usage of past tenses in real texts. The analysis was conducted on the basis of examples from four German newspapers: Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit, Bild.

Opis:: In this paper the author is dealing with combinations of tense forms in Serbian folk epic poetry and he statistically proves that the present tense is the predominant tense form in this kind of Serbian folk poetry. He is trying to discover the main reasons for such use of the present tense. As regards combinations of tense forms in Serbian folk epic poetry, they are rather free and depend, primarily, on the manner of presenting the epic content and on the length of the poem, but there is above all a certain regularity resulting in firm systems.

Opis:: The main task of this paper has been to investigate the ways of combining tense forms in folk lyric poetry. The concept of folk lyric poetry in this case refers to the oriental-style love-song, the folk love song which was created with the advent of the eastem Islamie culture into the Slavic south, mostly among the part of the population which accepted the Islam. In terms of context, oriental-style love-songs are a shorter kind of songs, of about ten verse lines on average. Even though the texts in ąuestion are fairly short, they include multiple combinations of the tense forms employed. That is primarily due to the way of presenting their verbal content. The author has proved that the present tense form is the most frequent in this poetry. Why that is so and how its main function is realised are the issues treated in this paper. The author proves there is no oriental-style love-song belon- ging to verbless poetry, that all the songs were composed with the use of two, or usually morę tense forms. The most frequent are the combinations of the present and past tenses, the latter most often expressed by the perfect tense and the aorist. Morę rarely the futurę tense form is involved too.

Así pues presentaremos un estudio contrastivo en el cual intentamos analizar las formas verbales del pretérito perfecto compuesto en comparación con las formas verbales del present perfect inglés. La fundamentación de nuestro estudio viene motivada por la necesidad de reflexionar sobre la aplicación didáctica de la comparación en el caso de los aprendices de ELE cuya L1 es el polaco y los que tienen como referencia el inglés como L2, dado que, en polaco, al pretérito perfecto compuesto y al pretérito perfecto simple les corresponde la misma forma gramatical de pasado, así que el polaco carece de una oposición temporal semejante a la de pretérito perfecto compuesto y pretérito perfecto simple.
The purpose of the present article is to describe the temporal and aspectual characteristics of the category perfecto / perfect in Spanish and English from a didactic perspective. A contrastive study will be presented, which will compare the verbal forms of Spanish pretérito perfecto compuesto tense with verbal forms of English present perfect tense. The present article is motivated by the need to reflect on the didactic use of the comparative study for Polish students learning Spanish as a foreign language, for whom the only reference point may be English, given that there is no temporal opposition in Polish such as pretérito perfecto compuesto / pretérito perfecto simple.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest opis cech temporalnych i aspektualnych kategorii perfecto / perfect w języku hiszpańskim i angielskim z perspektywy dydaktycznej. Zaprezentowane zostanie kontrastywne studium, w którym porówna się formy werbalne hiszpańskiego czasu pretérito perfecto compuesto z formami werbalnymi angielskiego czasu present perfect. Artykuł motywowany jest potrzebą refleksji nad dydaktycznym zastosowaniem niniejszego studium komparatywnego dla polskich studentów uczących się języka hiszpańskiego, dla których jedynym punktem odniesienia może być język angielski, zważywszy, że w języku polskim nie istnieje opozycja czasowa typu pretérito perfecto compuesto / pretérito perfecto simple.

Present Perfect in European Portuguese and its Polish equivalents

Opis:: O presente estudo tem por objetivo, num primeiro momento, descrever o funcionamento do tempo verbal Pretérito Perfeito Composto, enquadrando-o no sistema temporal do Português Europeu e analisar o uso desta forma verbal nos exemplos do corpus CETEMPúblico. Num segundo momento, a partir da tradução dos exemplos escolhidos, tenta-se apresentar os equivalentes do tempo em questão, evidenciando, ao mesmo tempo, os recursos de expressão dos seus valores em polaco. A análise mostra que em português, o sistema verbal se organiza, principalmente, a partir do tempo verbal enquanto em polaco a partir do aspeto verbal. Enquanto o português encontra expressão para as suas oposições aspetuais, principalmente, nos meios sintáticos, o polaco expressa o aspeto através dos processos léxico-morfológicos.
The aim of this study is, firstly, to describe how the present perfect tense functions within the temporal system of European Portuguese and to analyse the use of this verb form in examples from the CETEMPúblico corpus. Secondly, based on the translation of the examples chosen, an attempt is made to present the equivalents of the tense in question, while at the same time highlighting the resources for expressing its values in Polish. The analysis shows that in Portuguese, the verbal system is mainly organised around the tense, while in Polish it is organised around the verbal aspect. While Portuguese finds expression for its aspectual oppositions mainly in syntactic means, Polish expresses aspect through lexical-morphological processes.
